Speaking of "can't sleep" -- this sleep-lacking person has learned from recent pictures...

Argus bear-ly worked,
Canada geese might as well be renamed "world geese,"
Ren really, really, really dislikes certain garish structures,
Seagulls worry about their wives,
Satguru is part acrobat,
Sometimes a sheep dog is a goat dog,
Thistles are monsters,
and, I hope not, but the Texans may soon be sending photos of themselves surrounded by water.

This is a less lurid part of the temple complex from the other day's visit.

Today is a phone box! We don't have red ones, ours are yellow and those in Guernsey are green I think. I inspected it, working and complete with a telephone directory.

I was in London this morning, so here's a photo of the sign outside the Royal Courts of Justice, possibly better known as 'The Old Bailey'.
The inscription on the coat of arms says "Dieu et mon Droit", which is French for "God and my right". This has nothing whatever to do with the rights of those appearing in court, but refers to the right of the sovereign to prosecute those accused of crimes!

Here is another picture of the affluence of Hampstead Garden Suburb, from Hampstead Heath extension. These houses go for around Ł5 million

Acrobat? I like the sound of that! I may have had allusions to that in the past though of course I can say no more

This building began life as the Empire Theatre of Varieties, featuring music-hall stars like Marie Lloyd. In my youth it was the Cinema de Luxe (pronounced de Loo in Hastings), with an interior that was still recognizably that of an old music-hall. Now it's a strangely depressing-looking amusement arcade and bingo hall.

Who? What? Where? Who’s buying the most 7-Eleven stuff? The answer is – the most Slurpee® beverages in the world are purchased in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. This from the company trivia website.

Yes we here in the frozen north can't get enough of the cold, it's not unusual to see people bundled up in parkas and snow boots coming out of a 7-11 drinking a Slurpee.

We have corrugated metal here Copago but we don't use it on our homes. It's used as a roofing material on small outbuildings and sometimes for fencing. Here in Winnipeg the outside of homes are mostly stucco or brick.

Finally a nice day to get out. We went to our main city park and our Zoo so I'll finally have some interesting (I hope) shots to show you. This is a shot of a water lily pond in our English Garden.

Click below for a close up of the lilies.

Here's a corner of the house, Argus, all the new iron was re-done about two years ago so still shiny. Under the verandah it's still iron but has been painted at some stage. I wouldn't say it's popular Australia wide but it's common enough in this corner - possibly because it was a cheaper material.

Interesting Copago...The roof looks like metal roofs that are becoming popular in North America, they come in different colors and can be made to look like tile or shingles. We do put metal siding on our houses but it's made of aluminium (is the spelling right?) and is made to look like clapboard (wood siding). People use that as they don't have to paint it. It comes in many colors. I'll show you a photo of my house tomorrow.

Ahh we have that here too, I'd call it cladding though.
Most times you'd see the corrugated iron put the other way which makes far more sense. We often have dust storms brew up and the dust lands on the iron and just sits there. After a good few of them the house looks striped brown and silver. At least the other way it has nothing to land on.
While we're on about homes. What is spackle? Read about a home renovation on the 'net somewhere and couldn't quite work out what it was. Know it has something to do with DIY though!

Spackle is the filler which you use to fill in holes and blemishes before painting or putting up wallpaper. We call it filler in Britain so you might too, the most well known brand being Polyfilla so some people just call all filler polyfilla as a generic name, like hoover for a vacuum cleaner.

Toast with Marmite spread thinly on it might be good, or perhaps some porridge.

A monument to a brave man killed in 1910 while attempting to stop a runaway horse. This spot is today next to a very busy main road. How different it must have been in his day.

Here is a close-up of the inscription, which reads:

NEAR THIS SPOT
ON THE 30TH MAY 1910
CAPT CHARLES CLAUDIUS-de la POER BERESFORD
ROYAL ENGINEERS
WAS KILLED
IN A BRAVE ATTEMPT TO STOP A RUNAWAY HORSE

Hats off to Capt. Charles Claudius-de la Poer Beresford (quite a name too).

Recently in this forum I learned what a blue jay looks like – and now, thanks to cinnam0n, I’ve seen a cardinal bird. Thanks, cinnam0n.

This is the courtyard of Somerset House in London – the home of art galleries like the Courtauld Institute and Hermitage Rooms, not to mention some of the top brass in Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs.

For many years from the age of 9 I went to school via this back entrance to Golders Green station. About 20 years ago they closed it and everyone has to walk half way round the block and go in the front entrance. They also had a separate ticket office so now they all have to funnel through a tiny room instead of having two separate streams of commuters. Progress...
