I dunno if these are "obscure" but I just recently heard of them.

Gary- They are obscure, because i have never heard of them. But as someone pointed out, bands over here that are 'obscure' are actually really popular over in the States and places like that.
I love this topic, it gives me some bands to look into.

Another band that I think is pretty cool is Motion City Soundtrack. It's been awhile since I've heard them though.

Ryan Star is AWESOME. He should have won. But he's better off.
My favorite obscure band is Sleater-Kinney (RIP). Maybe not the first riot grrls, but certainly the strongest-sounding. Of Montreal, Glassjaw, Bayside, Wesley Willis, Bad Brains, Against Me! - all are pretty good yet relatively obscure bands.

Death Cab for Cutie and Funeral for a Friend aren't really all that obscure (and I'm not even from the US!)
Switchfoot absolutely rock! I'm not sure whether other people know them, but I absolutely love their stuff.

We must be really behind all other countries here in Aus, i mean, all these bands i know and love, are pretty much unheard of over here, yet all these other people from other countries know who they are. It is cool.

I guess I would say that Anberlin is my favourite obscure band. I don't consider them obscure, but no one ever seems to know who I'm talking about when I mention them.
The Fully Down as well. They're still pretty unknown outside of Ottawa, even though they've toured the US and played on Warped Tour three years in a row. Check them out on Myspace.

The most obscure music from my list that I enjoy are:
Architecture in Helsinki Cat Power Arovane Casey Stratton Sleeping At Last Sacha Sacket
I wouldn't call Jason Mraz obscure at all. Not in Australia anyway. A few years ago, his first single "The Remedy" was played on the radio all the time! Same with Three Days Grace, I think they are most well known for their single "I Hate Everything", but I prefer a few of their other tracks.

Motorhead arent popular over here. Us Aussies must be really behind on our music or we are all biased and play the same crap all the time. it is a good thing for me, because, if i lived in the States i would just be one of the crowd, but here no-one knows the music i listen too.

Because, you know, MCR is complete Gold and ever so indie.
I have a fairly long list of bands I would consider obscure, but someone on these boards will undoubtedly have heard of them. On the top of the list would probably be Neutral Milk Hotel and The Mountain Goats.
