I like 'obscure' bands though. I like listening to things no-one else does, anyone else agree with that?
I mean back when 'bullets' came out NO-ONE knew who MCR was, it was like my own thing, and it stayed that way until 'The Black Parade' CD came out. But i enjoy people knowing who they are now as well, because then you can talk to people about your music.

Dashboard Confessional rock! I absolutely love their stuff, especially the "Dusk & Summer" album.
I honestly don't really care whether people like the stuff I listen to. I'm not one of those people who tries to fit in, but I won't purposefully try to be different either.
Anyone else know the Rascal Flatts, just out of interest?

I just wanted to add a few more of my fav 'obscure' bands here, let me know if you have heard of them- Hawthorne Heights Senses Fail Emery Bleed Taking Back Sunday Scary Kids Scaring Kids Everdae Typecast Dashboard Confessional
I forgot all of them when i did this before!
I've heard of and listen to all of these bands with the exception of Scary Kids Scaring Kids and Everdae. I enjoy them all. What are SKSK and Everdae like? In the same genre as the rest?

Rascal Flatts are HUGE where I live. I think everyone here knows them and has probably seen them in concert at least once.

Really? No one in S Africa knows them at all, but I absolutely fell in love "What Hurts The Most" when I heard it (once, and only once) on the radio. So I started looking form some of their stuff, and found I really liked it a lot.

I'm from the US, so, i guess that makes a difference. I love them though. What hurts the most makes me tear up every time i hear it. Do you know about Keith Urban? If you like Rascal Flatts, then you should LOVE Keith Urban.

Three Days Grace is one of my favorite bands. I have even been lucky enough to see them live a couple of times. Canadian bands ROCK!

Obscure music is what I prefer. Those little known, seldom heard artists. I suppose these days it's easy finding and enjoying obscure bands. There simply are more people creating and releasing music through various mediums.
It would be difficult listing a favorite band or artist. Even for a certain genre. But I'll mention some favorites I've come across in the last few years:
Robert Johnson & the Punch Drunks Selda Bagcan Gentleman Caller (the Indiana band) Mondo Topless Blanche Afrodizz Kraan Green Pajamas Star & Key of the Indian Ocean Acid Mothers Temple Wooden Wand Popium Nikki Corvette Dr. Frankenstein Xhol Caravan Mocca The Barbary Coasters Irene Susanna & the Magical Orchestra I'm From Barcelona
Hard to gauge what's obscure. I don't listen to radio anymore and pretty much find music on my own.

Rogue, What's your favorite "genre"? I pretty much find my music the same way you do, but have never heard of any of the bands on your list. Are there any that you would recommend that i check out?

Anyone heard of "Big Sound Authority"? They were a blue-eyed soul-Northern soul band from UK and released one album before splitting up. Although they were active during mid-80's they still sound fresh today methinks.
I like "The Men They Couldn't Hang"...

Surf instrumental is my favorite genre. From the list I made, the surf bands include Star & Key of the Indian Ocean, Dr. Frankenstein and Robert Johnson & the Punch Drunks (although they lean more towards R&B/surf instrumentals). I prefer the "fringe" genres such as surf, power pop, garage, Afro-funk, swing, ska (not rock ska as much as Caribbean flavored ska), French pop, Cajun & zydeco, folktronica, psych-folk, and, for lack of better name, krautrock. I like obscure artists from the past as well. The new reissue craze I'm into is focused on those little known folk artists from the late '60s-early '70s who are finally seeing their material released on cd.
Plus I'm getting more into world music and non-English vocals of the genres I like. Selda Bagcan was a psych-folk singer-songwriter from Turkey in the early '70s. She may have the best set of pipes on a female vocalist these ears have ever heard. She sang protest songs and as a result, was banned from leaving the country for many years to perform. Two of her albums have been reissued in the last two years. I have to tell you, I was floored by the beauty of her voice. Didn't understand a single word but felt all the emotion within and around her voice and the words she sang.
Ok, that's more than you wanted to know. If any of the genres I mention appeal to you, let me know & I'll post some recommendations.

I listen to some non-english music, because you can feel the emotion in it, but i dont listen to it often.
My brother asked if you could please give some recomendations for Surf Instrumentals, he is into all of that stuff, he hates my 'emo' music.

That's so weird because alot of the stuff you guys are mentioning is REALLY popular over here and not obscure at all...like everything MCRismyLIFE mentioned are really popular bands over here...and Coheed and Cambria...I'm seeing them tomorrow and they are ANYTHING but obscure here in the U.S. Hawthorne Heights, Senses Fail, Taking Back Sunday, and Dashboard Confessional are also very popular. I think Hawthorne Heights is also going to be at Warped Tour tomorrow. I love Taking Back Sunday and Dashboard Confessional...also whoever mentioned NoFX...one of my favorite bands but definitely not obscure. It's so strange that to people over in like Australia this stuff is unheard of because they're all everyday names over here.

I know, i have been saying for years it all depends where you are from, becuase people i talk to in America know all of the bands i listen to, where as here people just think i am a freak.
The problem here is that they only play the same things over and over, like Justin, Fergie, Pink and Gwen (all the stuff i hate) and if you ring and request something, like one time i rang and requested 'Helena' by MCR, and they wouldnt play it because it wasnt on the playlist for that hour, which defeats the purpose of requesting a song right?!
So what you are saying is if i lived in the States, i could talk to people and they would know who all them bands are, Oh Man, i might have to go over there, i was supposed to go to the Warped Tour this year, but i have too many UNI exams, DAMMIT i could have seen Hawthorne Heights, i love them.

Besides the 3 bands I mentioned (Star & Key of the Indian Ocean, Dr. Frankenstein and Robert Johnson & the Punch Drunks), I'd also recommend:
the Surf Coasters- a Japanese band, maybe the best current surf instrumental group
the Surfites, just released their first album this year
Destination: Earth- they're a lot like Man Or Astroman, who were popular during the late '90s. They toss in dialogue from grade-b sci-fi films into their music
Pollo Del Mar, a So-Cal band that is very good at reinventing the traditional surf sound
The Mermen, definitely not traditional by any stretch of the imagination. This is experimental, almost prog-surf. But I love all kinds of surf and these guys are fantastic at these sounds
Fabulous Plank-Tones. Like Dr.Frankenstein, they're from Spain and they can be compared to Pollo Del Mar for a great energy level
The Ghastly Ones take a horror movie theme and mix it up with surf
The Astroglides are an Israeli band. They're first two albums were a mix of surf instrumental and punk vocals. The punk was terrible, really bad, but the surf was absolutely fantastic. They've released all surf albums since- highly recommended.
Double Crown records site sells a lot of great surf cds. I think they offer downloads though I go for the cds. CD Baby also sells surf but beware, they toss in regular rock albums among what they label as surf, so it's best to listen to all the samples before buying. I have picked up a lot of great surf through CD Baby.

Not sure how obscure, but The Albion Band was hardly mainstream, and turned out the single best folk rocker who now works solo, Ashley Hutchings. You need a treasure map to find his albums but once you do they mail you whenever he makes a new one, which have been pretty regular. Also Richard Thompson from Fairport Convention who has done the same but is slightly better known by anyone into folk. Ashley does more traditional music mainly based on Morris Dances brought up to date (the date is around 1968), where Richard writes most himself although the end results are quite similar. Mike Oldfield and Steeleye Span popularised folk rock in the early 70s but these other guys never got into the mainstream, unlike Fiddler's Dram's one hit wonder, Bangor. They probably prefer the old fashioned small concerts with long time followers than the big time.
