Now, this is what I call getting muddy! This is during the annual Mud-Volleyball Tournament played for charity in Denver, Colorado. Teams play in mud all day and it's all for a good cause (besides having loads of fun). And by the end of the day, we're exhausted!

I've posted photos in the photo-a-day thread about the salt lakes. At the moment the water isn't all the way around and there is this channel that can (just!) be crossed but it's really really really muddy and a couple inches under the surface is a band of mud that is the blackest of black. Very weird.

This is dune 45 at Soussusvlei in Namibia and I was one of the people climbing to the top. (It is not as easy as it looks!) Bet I win for the picture with the most sand.

Now you didn't really expect a statement like that to go unchallenged, did you
This is the Erg Chebi region of the Sahara in southern Morocco, where the dunes are several hundred metres high. Those are my own footprints which stretch over and beyond the large central dune on the horizon. For a larger image see

Awesome photo, Picqero! And your dune is quite impressive, too, Lady1!

I'm going with bhs63, ClaraSue and Copago and offering up some mud I accumulated on my foot and skirt while working on clearing a "camp of operations" spot on the land we bought. We were on a schedule and thus moving over here regardless. Unfortunately for us, the remnants of a hurricane had recently crossed the area so we had to muck around in the muck for a week or so before things dried out. I joked with the family that no one in their right mind would be camping out in this stuff so I took this to be used as photographic evidence (not sure if it proves I'm nuts or that it was very muddy--perhaps both!).

Say "mud" and I think of Passchendaele, so I thought I'd post this pic from my Ottawa trip. It's the Passchendaele exhibit at the Canadian War Museum. As a visitor, one approaches along the duckboards and finds oneself standing beside the soldier drowning in the mud who can be seen in the foreground. It stops you in your tracks.

Wow, Clarasue. Mud Vollyeball looks great!

Do you actually play standing in the mud pits?

lioness, we do indeed play in the mud pits. The mud is anywhere from a couple of inches to a foot deep in places under the water. Your shoes have to be taped on to keep them from being sucked off in the mud when you move. It's a great workout for your legs, but it's exhausting work. And when you fall down, you get really dirty. That picture was taken early in the day. At the end of the day, you're totally covered from head to toe in the muck, and you have laughed so much your sides hurt.

The Culbin Sands was the last desert in Britain, until in the 1920s the Forestry Commission planted some trees on it.
Not much sand now remains. (mostly trees, heather and moss) This path is one of the largest stretches of sand still remaining in the Culbin Forest.

Me on Fraser Island,Queensland examining a turtle thrown up onto the sand by a small cyclone. The island is the largest sand island known.
