Byzantine Empire: On December 25 in 820 Emperor Leo V was assassinated by conspirators in the Hagia Sophia, at Constantinople. Though unarmed, he fought back but died of his wounds. He was succeeded by Michael II, the commander of the palace guard. Leo's family (including his mother and his wife Theodosia) were exiled to monasteries in Princes' Islands.
