Not a garage door either. The reflected blue sky is a subtle hint

A tin roof? (Was my first thought but thought it was too obvious.)

Seen outside the U.S Embassy in London today; OK they're State flags, but how many can you recognise?

Nearly, but not quite right; well done anyway. As there aren't any more attempts, here's the correct answer from left to right:
Delaware - Pennsylvania - New Jersey - Georgia - Connecticut - Massachusetts - Maryland - South Carolina.
Admittedly spotting South Carolina is very difficult on this image, but look closely and you can just about see part of the white crescent in the upper hoist canton of the flag.
Michigan and Pennsylvania have similar flags, but the former depicts an elk and a moose each side of the central shield, whereas the flag of Pennsylvania has prancing horses.

As an aside, when I poked my camera through the embassy fence, to take this photo, I was immediately approached by an armed policemen! He was very friendly though , when I showed him the 'innocent' photo I'd taken - one advantage of digital cameras

I didn't know that individual states had flags until I joined FT so this site is definitely educational.

I spent some time in front of that embassy in my youth, or nearby anyway... only we weren't holding flags but placards!

Well, here we go. I'm thinking I cropped too large a piece and absolutely everyone will know what it is. On the other hand, maybe I posted this before and don't remember!

It looks like some sort of fabric to me, perhaps felt. My first inclination is say a handbag of sorts?

Nope, nope, and nope. However, one of the words in Mags' sentences may be a clue....

To add: Ren, a trainer? Me? Hahahaha! On the other hand, my husband and I just joined the Community Activity Center in the (misguided) belief that we might actually use it for exercise.

My first thought was a wheel clamp, but that tyre doesn't look thick enough. It also doesn't fit anything that Mags said!

Sorry ren, it isn't a clue -- simply an observation. The clue was in Mags answer - fabric. I should have explained the word "it" as misplaced at the word was.

It is indeed, Tredici, a rotary cutter. Had bhs come in this thread, as a quilter, she would have identified it in a heartbeat, as did you. No felt, just a background.

I also quilt, and this is what I use to cut the fabric. The circular blade is sharp as a razor, so it is very important to get into the habit of closing it each time it is set down. I have a few scars to show -- I learned quickly to close it after every use.
