That's right. These are water and foam outlets for an airport fire engine.

That was too easy. I should have posted this view:

A floodlight (whatever you Americans call that) in a park in Monterrey.

OR

A gopher's paddling pool.

A skylight in a living roof - like the ones here at the San Francisco Academy of Sciences?

Living in CA -- that's cheating!

Verbonica is exactly correct -- the roof at the California Academy of Sciences

...but actually, even though I live somewhat close, I have not seen it - have only read about it (with photos)... one of these days perhaps I'll get there.

Verbonica, you are in Napa? Please go by the French Bakery in Sonoma and eat a loaf of sourdough for me. There are some things I miss about CA -- the bakery and Vella Cheese Factory are two of them.

Oooh yes, I'd be up for a loaf of sourdough anytime... drool! Sonoma is a lovely town.

No guesses? As a clue, I could say that my camera was NOT pointing downward when the photo was taken.

None of those things, though Tredici and flopsymopsy are each close in a different way. The "channel" isn't necessarily useful for anything.

I can't wait for the "aha" that'll be heard 'round the world (or "Oh, Duh!") when the answer shows up... count me stumped for now.

Not a monument, no. It's something very ordinary.
