I've noticed over the last few days that the indicator of the amount of mail in my box (top right hand corner on main page) isn't going up anymore when I receive new mail.

I can be on here playing for hours, with multiple refreshs, and it looks like I don't have any new but if I go into my mail there's been up to five new messages there.

The number goes up then and stays at that number when I leave it but then the same thing happens again.

Is this just some weird glitch I'm having or is anyone else experiencing this?

I find that I'm not getting messages that (I think) I should be getting. I got a new crossword online, and there was no accompanying message, which was really odd.

Funnybuni, I remember reading a while back that there is no automated "Crossword Online" message like there is with quizzes. It's up to the editor to send a message, which I doubt they always do.

With my messages, I find the mailbox in the top corner won't update if I receive a message while I'm on the site, but if I return to the site later, it's fine. It also updates if I check my mailbox, as you mentioned, Midget40.

Crosswords don't have the same kind of "Congratulations your puzzle is now online" message that the quizzes do. Sometimes a crossword editor will send you one, but it's not automatic.

Same here.

Mine's been the same as midget's for a long time. It only updates when I first log on, or when I click on mail.

No one has reported a problem prior to you. I haven't experienced any difference to normal.

That happens to me too, but I didn't think it was a 'glitch'. It just that the homepage becomes cached. Same as how the current Expert topic as shown on the homepage doesn't always change until you leave the site and come back, or until you click the link and visit the actual Expert page.

Mine always used to change whenever the page changed.

I could be on 25, play a quiz, return to home page and it might now be 26 so I knew I had mail so I'd go and check.

I know because I always used to look when I was waiting for a quiz to be approved - I actually automatically glance up there without even registering it now.

I first noticed about a wek ago when I saw my latest quiz appear in the 'New quizs' box but I hadn't received my notification that it had gone on line.

Went in my box and it was there - with four messages about it.

And it's just happened ever since so this is a change for me.

Another possibility is that you could be losing messages at the same rate that you receive them. If a new message happens to come in on the 2 month anniversary of the last message in your mailbox, the number should stay the same even though you have new mail. It's happened to me before.

I've looked at that Jmorrow because thats happened to me befoe too but I'm not losing the amount I'm getting.

I've got a quiz going online every two to three days at the moment which generates more mail than usual (either compliments or corrections LOL) but I did actually go and delete a lot of my earlier messages to make sure this wasn't an issue and it hasn't made a difference.

I guess I'll just have to remember to go in and physically check my mail box every hour or so which is a pain.

No problems here; it changes whenever a message comes in, and when the 2 months are up.
What happens to the counter if you send message to yourself -- I just sent myself a message, and the counter went up by one.

[ what happens if you logout, and then log back in again .. or zap the Ft cookie? ]

Thanks for the suggestion gtho4 - Just went and checked.

If I send myself a message nothing happens to the counter - it stays the same.

If I log out and log back in the counter does go up one.

Don't know enough about cookies to try that one!

I've noticed the same thing. If a message comes in, the count does not change automatically. It only reflects the new message when I click on "mail" and go into my inbox.

When you log off and back on again, though, yes, it does reflect the change.

Yeah, I've seen this for quite a while. I used to attribute it to page caching but it seems to have gotten worse.

For the past few months I've been more-or-less forced to click the mail link regardless of what it might show, on the off chance there might be new mail waiting for me!

Yes, I do the same thing, have been for the last year actually, and often find I will have 3-5 new ones. I always keep my cache cleaned out, so that is not the main problem, but I'm sure it can add to it. That's one reason I love the 'flashing envelope' on this side! It would be a good feature on the QL too, but I'm not sure if Terry would ever do that.

I guess I just don't get as much mail as you guys do, lol. I'll check once or twice a day, but I rarely find new messages..

I click on it consistently when I'm stuck online all day (like today) with nothing to do but wait for that message that says "your quiz is online". Otherwise I only check my messages once every other day.

To "zap the FT cookie", I think all you need to do is to clear your cache, which in FireFox is "tools", and "clear private data".

I've got the opposite problem. Mailbox on that side updates just fine, but on this side, my envelope is always flashing - it counts my last piece of mail, opened or not, as new. I've deleted every possible cookie and cleared every possible cache. Once managed to make it go away for a couple of weeks, but then it came back again. Looks like I'm stuck with it. This may be the same problem - some interface between your computer and this site just not working well together.

It has been like this for me for months. When I am waiting on a message from one of my teammates, I have to keep checking while I am online. It kind of gets annoying after awhile but I know that some people get notifications when they receive mail which is why I haven't said anything until now. Glad to see I'm not the only one with this problem.

Funnybunni, if I clear my private data, won't it clear all passwords I have saved for other sites too?

New mailbox glitch--I'm trying to respond to an author with an important message and each time I click on the "Send this Message" button, I get the response "That is an invalid message".
