Great job Stu. Why doesn't Nightmare have one there? His quizzes are always great.

Wow very impressive Stu. Also great job to Cellardoor with 5.

Would any of you super authors be willing to reveal your excellent and good percentages?

I don't think we get those kinds of statistics. This isn't too far off, though.

"I don't think we get those kinds of statistics. This isn't too far off, though."

In the "My Quizzes" section on "Me" it gives you your percentages for all quizzes you've made. Unless this changes when quizzes become archived?

Oh, you're talking about for individual quizzes! Gotcha.

For Dracula:

Ratings: 39
Good & Excellents: 38 (97%)
Exc: 20 (51%), Good: 18 (46%)

What strikes me is that all of these 25 quizzes have highly specialized topics. Naively, I would have thought that quizzes with a broader audience fare better than those that require intimate knowledge of a very narrow field, but these authors prove otherwise. (Of course that means I could play a whole 2 of these without making it a pure guessing game or a "google and paste" orgy...)

Quizzes that are about specialised topics generally take longer to get a ranking, as they don't get as many plays as the quizzes on more popular topics. But once they get that rating...

I often find that a really well written quiz (like the ones I've played from this list) are worded so that it becomes an "educated guess" and I get more than I thought I would have at first glance. Or the wrong options are so good I don't mind The wrong answer options are just as important as the right answer when it comes to getting it "just so" with a question.

Very true--and more specialized quizzes are, by and large, only taken by people with a real love for the subject. What has historically been my highest-rated quiz has been taken almost exclusively by, I imagine, the patriotic Australians for whom I wrote it--it got most of its plays on ANZAC Day two years ago. Their ties to the subject matter is probably as responsible for its rating as anything else.

I would certainly agree that the more specialised quizzes are generally played by members with a good knowledge of the subject and/or a love of the subject, and a desire to learn more.
Given that scenario, it's to be expected that they will be highly rated. My own top rated quiz, is indeed a very specialised topic, and I personally do not feel that it's my 'best' quiz - which only goes to prove that ratings are highly subjective.

The list has changed slightly. My Inspector Morse quiz has re-entered the top 25 at position 23 after today's rankings. For the last few weeks it's been sitting at 26. It's rated as average difficulty and hasn't been played since June 21st. I wouldn't call it a specialised quiz as the show has been seen in many countries.

Unless you know all the in's and out's of the site, it doesn't prove anything. The only thing subjective are opinions.

Well said Nightmare. We as quiz takers (or makers) should realize that we don't get to choose how people rate a quiz.

lol. I would like to see AnneBonney's The Red Green Show quiz make it that far up! She is usually in the top 50 with that one. ;-) Good quiz.

RomeoMikeGolf, I would most definitely call that a specialized topic. It could be broadcast all over the world, but only people who watch the show will play it, right? I have never even heard of it, so even if it is shown here, I wouldn't know any answers. :-)

My number 17 last month has dropped to 217, with only a single play during the month. The difference between ratings for the quizzs near the top must be very slender indeed.

Congrats to everyone on the Top 25 list. I can only dream of being there. smile

A friend of mine asked me the other day if there was a list of the top quizzes. I didn't know but I've read this thread before so off I went to google to find it. Instead I found this link http://www.funtrivia.com/catranks.cfm?cat=1
After 18 months here I no longer consider myself a FT newbie and I thought I pretty much knew where everything was but I've never seen this list before. Have I been completely blinkered as I've wandered around the FT corridors or could this list do with more prominence? Would anyone else be interested in playing their way through the best/most popular quizzes in order to learn more about the world and/or about quiz writing?

I have spent many hours playing my way through the top quizzes in each category - there are some great quizzes there, and it's a good way to learn about some of the categories about which I come to the site knowing very little. I access it through the 'Me' menu - it's under Gold Member features.

What a great list! I have never seen that either, but it is a great starting place for a rainy day when I just want to go quiz crazy!

Thanks looney_tunes for pointing out that the list is available in the drop down menu. I probably should have found that earlier but there's so much to do here that I missed that link. I shall pass it on to my friend who was looking for a list and one day I'll plough through it too. smile This reminds me of the time I discovered the dial that controlled the dashboard lights in my car... after three years of ownership! I'd never needed it before so I never went looking for it, only to find it by chance one day laugh

I had a friend who lived in a house for four years with the main light in the front room broken. Eventually he decided it was time to get an electrician in to fix it. Sparky took one look at the light, changed the bulb and hey, presto...

Now, now Snowman, I know how to change a light bulb! laugh I didn't need to find the dial to alter the dashboard lights so I never looked for it smile The big question is how much did the sparky charge to put in a new light bulb?

I'm pleased my "Empedocles" quiz has moved up.

Maybe I should think of other Empedoclean quizzes next year.

But the burning question is: "how many funtrivia editors does it take to change a light bulb?"

Five.
One to put a new bulb in it, one to check it, one to send it back because it's the wrong bulb, one to get the right bulb, the first one to replace it, and another to flick the switch.

Darksplash, I think this list is posted once every quarter, so it doesn't track movements in and out of the Top 25 that occur in between postings.

There are some fantastic quizzes there! I was wondering if there was some way of featuring them on the home page, to let newcomers see some of the best we have to offer. I know I can see the top some-number-or-other in each category, but it's a Gold Member feature. Featuring the current top 25 could be an inducement to upgrade for more information. This would apply even for those whose favorite categories aren't among the current top-of-the-tops - seeing what is the most appreciated in that category is interesting.

The problem with that, Looney, is that they are already played and rated plenty... I have absolutely no idea where on the forums I read this, but it was mentioned that the top quizzes are usually listed first, and thus get even further into the lead... A list of the 25 best quizzes on the site would make players play those quizzes, and probably rate them all excellent, as they are "the best", and those 25 would simply be pushed far beyond reach of any other quiz.

The lower rated quizzes (even sunnies below 10,000) typically are listed on further pages on all the quiz pages, and so they don't get as many plays...

Personally, I do not want to see the top 25 list on the homepage. It would just make the rich richer and the poor poorer, so to speak.

Perhaps the point dg_dave was trying to make is that it is quite an accomplishment to have a quiz remain on this list for a full year, especially with the numbers of high quality quizzes that have been written over the past while?

As for Adam, he appears to be a quiet, humble, modest (and incredibly talented, of course) man. I doubt that "fame" motivated him to write so many quizzes that ended up getting Editor's Choice awards. But if making him a "poster boy" on the home page DID motivate him?? Well then, most of us would be in major trouble and Snowman might have to increase the NUMBER of quizzes that appear on this list (giggles!).

Thanks Snowman. smile
My quiz is now beginning the inevitable descent through the rankings, though I'm absolutely chuffed to have seen it peak at #3 for a week or two.

Is it anywhere near Greece, Ethan? I've got a map of Crete and I can't find it on there.

It's nowhere near as warm as Greece. It has a certain Scandiwegian (as Stephen Fry would say) feel to it. wink

Haha Salami. I do have a quiz that made it to the top 25 once upon a time. It is currently ranked 250! My highest rated quiz at the moment is sitting at 113 right now.

Often regression to the mean operates with inexorable efficiency. Ten years ago or so I had a quiz in top 25 and now it's at 15,000 + where it seems to have found its level, for the time being at least. smile

Keeping a quiz in the top 25 (or for that matter in the top 1,000) is quite an achievement.

The top 25 is definitely difficult to stay in. Ethan's Skyrim quiz suffered the same fate.

My highest rated quiz ever was about 300. 5 years later it's still under 3,000. :-P

Hmm, I amaze myself if I write any quiz at all lol. My best ranked quiz is in the 7,500+ somethings. I know exactly why that is, but I'm more than okay with it. I also have two quizzes at OVER 65,000 (which I wish I could rewrite!). In any case, this list is meant for kudos, so it's nice to see several of my favourite authors in the top 25 yet again - congrats to you all! For those who are oh-so-close or who have recently dropped off, am absolutely sure you'll be there (or be there again) in the future : )

Thanks for compiling the list, Snowman!

Doing this a couple of days early as I'm going to be at the Paralympics on the 1st (and the rankings will be the same as they are today).

5. The Top Hits of 1977 By Author: maddogrick16 (Music)
6. Afrikaans to Zulu By Author: pu2-ke-qi-ri (World)

adams627 is slacking--only four quizzes in the top 25 this time around! stuthehistoryguy has three. jmorrow and kyleisalive are joined on two by WesleyCrusher, who hits the top 25 with the only two new entries this month.

I'll just have to content myself with knowing that I did, once, achieve this then. Of course, the quiz might bounce back up but, with my luck, it would be in the month that doesn't count.

Thanks for your efforts - it was remiss of me not to say that in the previous post.

Nice job with the list. Congrats to all.

I'm not even close... Highest rated is over 600. Someday, I'll be in the top 25 (you know, when I turn into Adams and Stu and write a quiz about Literary Vampires of the Enlightenment Drop-a-Letter. :P

And a special congratulation to adams627, who is about to conquer this list. With 7 out of 25 already there, his coup is almost succeeded.

I've decided to resurrect a monthly look at the top 25 quizzes on the site for your enjoyment. Since it's been 8 months since the last list, I won't post the increases, drops, and new quizzes until next month's listing.

Interestingly, only 7 of the top 25 quizzes on the site have earned editor's choice awards.

The list contains 17 names, two of which have three quizzes in the list (stuthehistoryguy and jmorrow), and four have two quizzes each in the list (adams627, thejazzkickazz, pagiedamon, and jouen58), with 11 authors with one quiz in the list.

Animals, Celebrities, General, Geography, Hobbies, Movies, Religion, Sports and Video Games are not represented on the list.

Television is seen on this list 8 times. Brain teasers twice, Entertainment once, For Children once, History thrice, humanities twice, literature thrice, music twice, people once, sci/tech once, and world once.

The top 6 quizzes on the site don't seem to have changed since September, which is fairly interesting.

However, toot toot!

I don't see that as such a bad thing...what the membership has thought well-written may not reflect the opinions of the editing staff. Nothing against Kyle or his artistry (I can only draw stick figures too wink ), but stick figures aren't that worthy of an EC, don't you think? It is definitely well-written, hence it is # 1 for that reason. You can only do so much with stick figures. wink

Oh, those stick figures were definitely worthy of an EC. wink

I agree, though, what is viewed by members as an excellent quiz is not always viewed as such by editors. Also, an EC can easily be ranked 100,000. We all have different tastes... It what makes us all great (I taste like cured sausage, by the way).

Certainly not a bad thing, but an interesting figure, IMO. smile

I'm surprised there are so many TV quizzes on the list. Even a really written TV quiz is usually 'just' a TV quiz, you know?

But since so many are well-rated, I must ask... what's wrong with mine?! tongue

Quite excited to see two new entries into the top 5! And two quizzes not seen on the top 25 before. Wes' cat quiz introduced animals to the list for the first time since, like, ever, debuting at 6 a couple weeks ago and now on the list at 4. It's a wonderfully deserving quiz. wink

Both the quizzes no longer on the list were from television. Now only 6 TV quizzes are on the list.
