It's the West Pier in Brighton & Hove. It was one of the most elegant of the traditional English piers, perhaps even the most elegant. But from the 1970s onwards it suffered a series of disasters - it was damaged by a devastating storm, a terrible fire, then another storm.
Brighton has another pier - former residents like me still call that one the Palace Pier but it has now been renamed as the Brighton Pier, no doubt a sad recognition that the West Pier will never be restored.
However, the photographer in me can't resist the West Pier as it is now - a derelict, burned, rusting hulk that absorbs light and makes the sea sparkle in contrast. Near every dead pier there's a camera waiting to pan out.
