Normally, I'd be annoyed by ones like this, but it was just too blackly comic:

soberness is related to temporary state

You said: condition

soberness means "the state of being sober"
temporary state means "a state that continues for a limited time"

nakedness is related to condition

You said: temporary state

nakedness means "the state of being without clothing or covering of any kind"
condition means "a state at a particular time"

So...soberness is a temporary state and nakedness is a condition? I feel I should be organizing some kind of intervention. Or maybe a reality show.

I got that pair reversed today, too! I filed it under 'You win some, you lose some' in my memory bank - it won't trick me again should the combination ever reappear.

Only two people got these two right in set 19 today:

persona grata is related to diplomat

You said: treater

persona grata means "a diplomat who is acceptable to the government to which he is sent"
diplomat means "an official engaged in international negotiations"

mediator is related to treater

You said: diplomat

mediator means "a negotiator who acts as a link between parties"
treater means "someone who negotiates (confers with others in order to reach a settlement)"

You can't possibly know how many people in a particular set got a specific pairing right apart from the people who get 30/30. I was in set 19 yesterday and scored 28/30 - but I did get the pairing you quote right, I missed another one.

I would have got them correct, Hairy. Probably. At least, I can see the logic in the answers. Seems a legitimate 'best fit' in this case.

On set 17 today I got this connection:

"basic unit of money on Malta" with the answer "lira"

I think it probably ought to be changed to add in 'former', since Malta adopted the Euro in 2008.

Adding - the words to match were offense and prosecution. I went with the spelling consistency of defense and offense - but that was not the way the game saw it.

from one grammarian site:

Defence and defense are different spellings of the same word. Defense is preferred in American English, and defence is preferred in all other main varieties of English, including Australian, British, and Canadian English.

Offence and offense have the same parallel preferred usages.

In every case I can remember, it matches the British word with the American word and vice versa.

How do I report a disagreement on word definition on Word Wizard?

Some of the 'correct' definitions are getting distinctly odd, and rejecting better options on the list. E.g, today we had

13. Furnish with power or authority
Your answer: aggrandize
aggrandize means "add details to"
The correct answer was clothe

Dictionary - Looked at several, same answer

aggrandize
əˈgrandʌɪz/
verb
1. increase the power, status, or wealth of.
"an action intended to aggrandize the Frankish dynasty"
clothe (kl )
tr.v. clothed or clad (kl d), cloth•ing, clothes
1. To put clothes on; dress.
2. To provide clothes for.
3. To cover as if with clothing.

In the same Wizard, Bend or turn Backward was defined as 'Replicate'
rather than 'Dodge'

replicate
verb
ˈrɛplɪkeɪt/
1. 1.
make an exact copy of; reproduce.
"it might be impractical to replicate Eastern culture in the west"
synonyms: copy, reproduce, duplicate, make a copy of, make a replica of; More

There is a separate thread for posting Word Wizard issues - it is stickied at the top of the board. I believe, however, that the actual dictionary is offsite, and not under FT control. It can be filtered to remove unacceptable content, but I think we are stuck with the definitions, often slightly unusual to say the least, that get posted there. If you look around, you can find the source dictionary's definitions online, even the really strange ones. This one gives the same definition of replicate:
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/replicate

Could a moderator return the thread title to "Re: Mind Melt", please?

edit1: I'm trying to do it by editing my post.

edit2: Ah success. I hope it is okay to return a thread title to the original?

SET 20 today - the set from hell... laugh I just panicked ...

Three of the answer options in the third set were:

Click to reveal..
change

change shape

alter

The 'question' options were

Click to reveal..
harden

harshen

furl

Good luck!

Solution:

Click to reveal..
furl is related to change shape

furl means "form into a cylinder by rolling"
change shape means "assume a different shape or form"
---------

harden is related to change

You said: alter

harden means "become hard or harder"
change means "undergo a change"
-----------

harshen is related to alter

You said: change

harshen means "make harsh or harsher"
alter means "cause to change"

I agree with sufferer is more for insomniac and rheumatic for sick person. Insomnia is a symptom of many illnesses or a symptom of "I Must Get More Badges and More Points!"

Hrm. Maybe insomniac should be changed to badge tart?

disequilibrium is related to state of affairs

disequilibrium means "loss of equilibrium attributable to an unstable situation in which some forces outweigh others"
state of affairs means "the general state of things"
-----------------------

So the general state of things in life is to be in an unstable situation with some forces stronger than others and experiencing a loss of equilibrium?

Well at least 4 people in my set were better gamblers. More proof that I should never go to Las Vegas.

You said: abnormality

abnormalcy means "an abnormal condition"

amastia is related to abnormality
You said: abnormalcy

amastia means "absence of the mammary glands (either through surgery or developmental defect)"
abnormality means "an abnormal condition"

A-B-Normal is the brain type of Young Frankenstein's Monster. I used that criteria to distinguish between the two possibilities.

This seems to be a problem with the fact that the questions never print anything past a colon or semicolon.

affectioned is archaic

I looked elsewhere (let's just say that the dictionary for Mind Melt is online somewhere), and the actual definition is "archaic. : having a tendency, disposition, or inclination : disposed."

As you can see, the single word "archaic" is not very helpful and doesn't describe it. Can you fix the bug that deletes everything after the colon or semicolon?
