The Cricket World Cup returns to the Indian sub-continent after a gap of 15 years! 14 of the cricket world's best teams will be seen in action in the 6-week tournament spread across India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh as they battle to try and win the title being held by Australia since 1999!
Tournament Format: Group A: Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Canada, Kenya Group B: Bangladesh, England, India, South Africa, West Indies, Ireland, Netherland
7 Teams in each group. In the first round, each team of a Group will play with all other teams within the same group. It means each team will play 6 matches (42 league matches in all). After the end of first round, top 4 teams in each group will go to next round from where it is a knock-out format. Can Australia win a 4th consecutive World Cup?Will the Indian team finally win a World Cup after that 1983 fairy tale and be able to live upto the expectations of a billion plus people? Can South Africa finally shake off that "chokers" tag and win when it finally matters? Can England continue their recent run of good form and mount a serious challenge for their first ever World Cup win? Will Sri Lanka continue to be invincible on their home ground and add to their 1996 title (when the World Cup was last held in the sub-continent?Will there be a surprise winner from amongst the rest? Maybe "perenneial over-achievers at World Cup" New Zealand, mercurial and temperamental Pakistan, enigmatic West Indies or even Bangladesh with their army of spinners?
All these questions will be answered on the field from February 19 to April 2. We will have our own sweet little comp here to decide who's the best guesser of us all The 2003 World Cup saw 23 tipsters enter the comp with ASA clinching the title (followed by gtho4 and silverginger). 2007 had 13 runners and Howie72 won it (followed by Copago and gtho4). Can Howie72 retain his title? can gtho4 make it a hat-trick of podium finishes? Or will it be any one of you out there?
Scoring is simple. We just pick the result of each match and win a point for every correct tip. Bonus points if you tip an upset win and if you pick a result solo (or 1 of 2 or 3 depending on participation). No bankers, no players names...plain and simple...use a dart board, use a crystal ball or simply toss a coin...it's all up to you
Sign up here if you'd like to take part in this short 5 round competition that starts February 19.
Tie-breaker rules for placings:
If 2 or more people finish equal on scores, they would be placed according to the following tie-break rules:
1. The differential between HoF and wooden spoons (whoever has higher difference places higher) 2. If still equal, person with more number of HoF awards places higher 3. If still equal, person who makes more right tips in matches played (48 in this tournament)...bonus points scored will not come into picture for this 4. IF STILL EQUAL, person who gets more number of underdog picks points
I foresee the tie-break coming into picture for this one

Do I have permission to post an invitation for this tourney in the "sports stadium"? Plenty of people there who discuss sports...
or is it unethical?

I have a technical question. Would Kenya beating Pakistan be considered an upset?

Quite a few new faces Wow! and welcome all! Eraserhead, YES, Kenya beating Pakistan would be considered an upset here and would get you an extra bonus point if it happens (not to mention the solo bonus too) I am going by the odds given out by various sites online and will only disregard matches between teams considered "equal".

Tips for MrFox (Received via PM on 21 feb)....first 3 games void for him...
disregard any games that have been played
# INDIA v Bangladesh @ Mirpur, Bangladesh # Kenya v NEW ZEALAND @ Chennai, India # SRI LANKA v Canada @ Hambantota, Sri Lanka # AUSTRALIA v Zimbabwe @ Ahmedabad, India # ENGLAND v Netherlands @ Nagpur, India # Kenya v PAKISTAN @ Hambantota, Sri Lanka # South Africa v WINDIES @ Delhi, India # AUSTRALIA v New Zealand @ Nagpur, India # BANGLEDESH v Ireland @ Mirpur, Bangladesh # Sri Lanka v PAKISTAN @ Colombo, Sri Lanka # INDIA v England @ Bangalore, India # Canada v ZIMBABWE @ Nagpur, India # Netherlands v WINDIES @ Mohali, India # SRI LANKA v Kenya @ Colombo, Sri Lanka
edited to add note after consultation with admins:
The first 3 games were all tipped the same by everybody, so it won't be fair to penalise MrFox for late tips...he gets to keep all points he scored so far...

That's what I mean srini. If Pakistan are favourites with the bookies, a win by Kenya wouldn't surprise, given Pakistan's match fixing history recently!

When a tipping comp on cricket is announced and 20 people from all parts of the world sign up, what are the odds that 2 Americans and a Canadian would be up the leader board after round 1 against a field that includes "fans" from more "cricket-knowing" countries like India, Australia, England and New Zealand?
But that's exactly what's happened here, with Nightmare, illiniman14, George95 not only getting near perfect picks of 13 of the 14 matches, but also picking a bonus point for tipping one of the underdogs to win their match! (Pakistan against Sri Lanka). Sypher and MrFox also picked up the bonus point for the same match to be a point off the pace.
The rest of us are all bunched up together with Rossian propping the table. I am sure she wouldn't like that!
Everybody picked the first 6 matches (8 in all) and another 2 matches had just one missed tip. We had a 85.3% success rate in this round...must be amongst the highest as a group in any tipping comp out here? Maybe Gtho4 can help us here.... If that India-England match had not ended in a tie, our percentage would be much higher!
Still early days in the tournament itself, with some pretty boring matches and a couple of interesting ties so far...maybe we will have more to talk about the matches in the next round...
If you haven't lodged your tips for round 2, you still have some time before the England-Ireland match starts off later today...

The World Cup is up and truly running now We had some fantastic and fascinating matches over the last week or so, mostly predictable, but some very interesting matches. England has contributed its all to make this World Cup "viewer-friendly". All its 5 matches to date have been good advertisements for the 50 over game and they sure are leaving their fans fuming and biting their nails all the way
Nobody expected them to lose to Ireland (of ALL the teams)....they did, prompting one writer on the cricinfo website to write "The only comparison that makes sense to me is with another team that played in green 42 years ago. The New York Jets were huge underdogs going into Super Bowl III against Johnny Unitas and the Baltimore Colts, but Joe Namath played the game of his life to upset the odds. The Jets were part of the much-derided American Football League, the new kids on the block. Against the might of the National Football League, they weren't given a chance. Their win paved the way for parity, for a level playing field."
Whether Ireland's win does that for cricket or not remains to be seen what with the ICC planning to cut the teams in next World Cup to just 10
Over here, illiniman14 has surged to sole lead by picking up another bonus point (the New Zealand win over Pakistan). 5 others won a bonus point for that match. There are also more HoF award winners this round than there are participants in some of my other comps
N-Bomb dared to pick Bangladesh's win over England! Wonder how much he would have won had he bet some money on that result in the real world! He was the sole pick for that match out of 19, and so wins an extra bonus for that pick.
At the other end of the table, srini701, Howie72 and trev1 all had a lousy round with just 7 right picks out of 13, and have all slipped to the bottom of the table
But plenty of action still to come....so go out there and hit a six or two
