The Grand National is the world's most prestigious steeplechase and is on again on April 9, 2011. There are currently 102 acceptances, but that number will be trimmed to 40 in the next couple of weeks.

RULES

The rules are simple, and are the same as last year, and the year before, and the year before that...

- Pick 10 horses in the order you think they'll finish, 1st to 10th.

- Points: for any horse out of the 10 you've picked, which finishes in the first five:
1st : 10 pts
2nd : 6 pts
3rd : 3 pts
4th : 2 pts
5th : 1 pt

- The order of your tips will be used as a tiebreaker.

Last year's winner was JaneMarple, with Szabs and paper_aero rounding out the placings.

I found a good link with loads of information about the race
here.

Cutoff time is five minutes before the race starts (4:15pm London time).

Get your name down in this thread and good luck, all!

After blindly picking my way to victory in the Melbourne Cup I feel like I have some momentum coming into this.

I'll have a go at this. I once won money in two successive years by picking the winner.

74 Still on Target for Grand National
24th March 2011

Quote:
A total of 74 horses remain in the John Smith’s Grand National following today’s second scratchings deadline. The world’s most famous chase takes place over four and a half miles at Aintree on Saturday, April 9, and boasts record prize money of £950,000 in 2011.

Just eight horses were taken out of the race today with the weights continuing to be headed by last year’s hero Don’t Push It on 11st 10lb. The 11-year-old recorded a famous success for owner J P McManus, trainer Jonjo O’Neill and jockey A P McCoy in 2010 and ran an encouraging race at Cheltenham last week when a staying-on 10th in the Pertemps Final, the same race he used for his Aintree preparation last year ...

The six-day confirmation stage for the John Smith’s Grand National is on Monday, April 4, with the final declaration stage at 10am on Thursday, April 7. There is a maximum permitted field of 40, plus four reserves.

THE 2011 JOHN SMITH’S GRAND NATIONAL

Class 1, Grade 3, £950,000 total Prize Fund. 4.15pm, Aintree, Saturday, April 9, 2011, four miles and four furlongs. For six-year-olds old and upwards which are allotted a rating of 110 or more by the BHA Head of Handicapping following a review of the horses entered and after taking account of races run up to and including February 13, 2011.

Any idea how to read the form? The numbers make sense, but the B, P, F, C, etc have me puzzled.

nope, I'm still looking for the decoder
maybe another site wil have a better form guide, but most sites just state the field is announced, without listing them

SP means they went for a spell, but the rest looks the UK version or racing form
