Well, I don't know who's done what or where, but it seems to be almost back to normal now. There's still a slight delay (maybe 5 seconds) loading the home page, but everything else seems to be working well.

I've just pinged FT, and it still times out.

pinging FT will always timeout -- those ports are closed. Glad to hear things are better.

Still as bad here. Going to give up now and will try again tomorrow. Hopefully tomorrow it will be back to normal.

Its 11.15 here in the UK. I'm still having the same problems as yesterday, two minutes to load the home page and some pages don't even load up. Tried using a different browser but to no effect.. I've even tried turning off zone alarm and my anti-virus..

Mine is still OK since it suddenly corrected itself last night; sorry if that doesn't help, but I'm posting for info purposes.

Digby - Try clearing your cache and then re-booting and if that doesn't work re-set your home hub or modem, whichever you use. That might help. BT told me to re-set the home hub and once I did everything seemed to get back to normal straight away.

I am beginning to think the only way to solve this is to cancel my contract with BT and find a new ISP.

Darn, too bad I missed it! LOL It was already fixed by the time I played this evening.

I cleared cache, disabled internet connection, switched off home hub, switched hub back on, re-enabled connection and lo and behold, all seems to be loading fine so far. Fingers crossed!

Sorted! I use Firefox and have it set to clear the cache after shut-down. However this didn't clear the temp internet files. What I did was the same as magijoh1 and now all seems to be back to normal. Still can't make out why the problem started in the first place? never had a problem like this before. Anyway happy to be back to normal. Thanks guys for the replies..

I suspect it is a faulty equipment in the BT network somewhere. I think when your hub is reset, a new route to funtrivia is created, possibly bypassing the fault, unless you are unlucky and it goes via the same faulty kit, which would explain why I still had problems after restting the hub yesterday, but somehow it was OK this morning. I did another traceroute this morning and it is routing via a different set of IP addresses to the one I did on Saturday, presumably away from the faulty kit.

I don't think clearing Temp Internet files makes any difference as I haven't done this on my second computer on the same connection and the site loads fine now on that PC as well.

I suspect you're right. After they told me it was the FT server and I went back to them and said how can it be, only BT users are affected, if it was the FT server it would be everyone they then told me to re-set the hub.

Dippo have you tried the re-set button on the hub. You might have to do this more than once. Hang in there..

I think I was the first to mention the reset! It took four attempts, with increasing gaps between restarts, but I've got it back again (for now)!

Hey, the volcano stopped erupting the other day and the ash cloud finally dissipated last night. How about that for coincidences?

Mine was slow again this morning, so I reset the hub and it seems better. According to mehaul, this obviously means that the volcano in Iceland has started erupting again, but I haven't seen anything about that on the news.

There have been some reports on our main site 'Contact Us' with people having problems with BT, I have referred them to this thead so they can see how some of you have overcome the problem, even if only in the short term.

Here's a little Telecommunication info. The web goes through satellites. It takes a certain amount of microwave energy to carry the data being transmitted up to the satellite. If the gain on the transmitter is set less than optimally, interference from something like a cloud could make it very noticable (failure to connect). Other environmental conditions can also attenuate a signal up to a satellite by half a decibel (db and the term half power in microwave terms means three db, so half a one isn't much but is appreciable). Some one from your same area may be up-linking through a different TWT or Klystron transmitter set at hi gain. BT may have other transmitters that are set up to snuff and won't see a problem. The un-optimal transmitter will be noticed though, intermittently on its own or when obvious attenuators are added into the mix. Your re-'booting' may actually be having your data sent to one of those other up-links through a series of repeater stations to a transmitter many miles away. After a while the BT computers decide to put you back to your other original route and you get the problem back. But then it could be something else entirely. Don't say the Volcanic ash had nothing to do with it because it may well have highlighted another failing aspect of the system.

Why the insult? If you don't think my analysis is valid, say so, and either end it there or offer some other explanation.

Update,

OK, I called BT and told them I had a problem. They did a line check and said there was a fault that was intermittent on my phone line. Today an engineer came round and put a new phone line in. So far I've had no more problems. Early days yet but will keep you posted if the problem returns... mehaul, thanks for the comprehensive information..
