I'm finding that is about the hardest part of making a question or quiz. There are so many that can be under, say, Geography, World, Music/Religion/People - all for one question - that I'd like some rule(s) of thumb. I've read all the "instructions" and commentary about how to do it, but...I am still having some problem. I can't believe I'm the only one having this problem. I hope.

There isn't really a hard and fast rule for categorizing a quiz/question that fits well under several topics. The first thing you can do is search for the topic from the main page and see where similar quizzes have been put online in the past. If you're still not sure, try to think of where people would look for the type of questions you're asking. And if all else fails, you can always send a message to an editor in a category you're considering or post a message in this forum asking for categorization help.

And there's never any penalization if you happen to submit to a category that isn't the best option. Your submission doesn't even lose its place in the queue if an editor moves it someplace else (this isn't true if you change categories and re-save).

When editors place quizzes, we try to put it into the categories where you'd expect to find the quiz. You aren't the only person to have had issues with categorization; the editors even have a colossal list of discussions about where to place quizzes. If it's not cut-and-dry, we're always here to help but we do ask that you attempt to place the quiz in the most logical spot.

If you have a quiz about Hymns, for example, try searching 'Hymns' in the homepage search bar. It should direct you to Music as opposed to Religion, even though Hymns are religious in nature. If your quiz is about the Culture of Turkey, we'd place it in World as opposed to Geography...unless you're culturing the cells of a Turkey (in Sci/Tech).

Most quizzes should be straightforward but we recognize that there are those that are not and will not hesitate to help. smile

Edit: I walk away from the computer for twenty minutes and I'm beaten to the punch. wink
Either way. :p

Thank you all. I hadn't thought about using that "find" (I guess that's what you mean by the "search bar") on the home page. What a great idea. I'm sure that will make things a lot easier.

Can someone please advise me on where to put a quiz on "Dream Interpretation"? Would it fall under "psychology" or possibly in "The Unexplained"? I'm really stuck on this one. Your input is appreciated.

We already have some in 'The Unexplained'-- that's probably your best bet.

Thanks kyle. I'll check out what's on file before I begin so as not to be repetitive.

I've been thinking about doing a quiz for children, about the Noongar (Indigenous people of the south west of Western Australia) names for animals. The intro would explain about the language, and each question would give a clue to the animal e.g. Jack was driving with his parents along a bush track when he saw a YONGER hopping in the paddock.
Which of the following animals is a yonger ?

Correct ans: Kangaroo

Incorrect: Sheep, Possum, Snake
Where would a quiz like this go, please ?

If the quiz is geared for children, I would suggest perhaps For Children > Topics for Kids > Our World for Kids.

I don't know if they accept foreign languages quizzes, though. If not, the next best place would be World > Languages and then perhaps further into Pacific Islands Languages. There's one in there for Maori.

Hello Tezza,

This sounds like a nice idea for a quiz, but LadyC is right that For Children does not accept language quizzes of the sort you are thinking of. Your best bet would be to submit it to the appropriate subcategory in World.

My coast of Australia borders the Pacific, but calling Australia a Pacific Island won't be very easy for people to find! World Languages sounds to me like the rightplace - and I notice that there are a number of languages there with only a single quiz, so if you submit there the World editors may create a new subcategory to fit yours into neatly.

Looney_tunes,thanks.. I phrased that very badly.. to an Indigeous person, "country" is different to what a wadjella (European) means.. when two Noongars meet for the first time, there are two important things to find out.. "who is your mob?" and "what's your country?".. "who are your family, and where do you come from ?".
It was amazing a while back, I was facilitating a meeting and at lunch, I introduced two ladies, both Elders of their districts.. it took nearly an hour, but these two ladies explored families until they found a common kinsperson.. then they could move on, because at that point, each knew the other's "country"...
Back to topic, and I will try World Languages... thanks smile
