Nascar
2012

These are the details for this year's comp:
  • There are 36 races; the first race is the Daytona 500 on February 26th. The last race is at Homestead on November 18th.
  • We pick names for our teams in this competition and the team names can be up to 17 characters, including spaces.
  • We will be picking 4 drivers this year for each race and all 4 of those drivers will be starters.
  • Slip-streaming rule will be more like it was in the past, which is you can't have the same line-up as any tippers within 5 places behind you in the competition.
  • Point Scoring - we receive points for the first 3 of the 4 drivers from our starting lineup to cross the finish line (aka our 4th placed driver is ignored) i.e. we score points for 3 drivers, but we have a "reserve" or 4th driver in our starting lineup.
  • The points we receive are the exact same points awarded by NASCAR for a race.
  • Default will be the 4 drivers from your team that were in your lineup in the previous week.
  • Deadline: Will always be midnight Friday FT time. There's a grace period of 3 or 4 hours, but please don't push your luck past that! Late starters can join by posting their team before midnight on any Friday, and they're in for the next race + all subsequent races. They come in at the rear of the field, on equal points with last.
Drivers & Transfer Windows:
  • No transfer windows this season, so you can change your line-ups each week.

  • The first 2 Chase drivers anyone picks have no penalties, if you pick a third Chase driver then it is minus 5 from you total score, pick a 4th Chase driver and it's minus 10 more from your total score.

    Last year's standings:

    Position Points Back

    1 Tony Stewart 0
    2 Carl Edwards 0
    3 Kevin Harvick 58
    4 Matt Kenseth 73
    5 Brad Keselowski 84
    6 Jimmie Johnson 99
    7 Dale Earnhardt Jr. 113
    8 Jeff Gordon 116
    9 Ryan Newman 119
    10 Denny Hamlin 119
    11 Kurt Busch 141
    12 Kyle Busch 157

  • If you have the same team as someone else: if you take the plunge and change a driver, any team within 5 spots in front of you cannot change their team to match yours. If they do, it's an invalid choice, and they keep their original team.
  • If your team is different: the blocking rule applies even if your team is different from a team below you, e.g. if you change your team and it now matches someone who's within 5 spots below you, it's an invalid choice.

EXAMPLES: whoever's running second last can change their team to whatever they want, as long as it doesn't match the tailender's. Whoever's running first cannot change their team to match anyone in spots 2 through 6.
N.B. this new rule will not operate in reverse. e.g. a player can change his team to match a player in front of him or her (don’t know why you would, but you can!)

Tie-breaker:
  • in the unlikely event that two or more tipsters finish on equal points at the end of the comp, weekly wins/wooden spoons will be used as a tie breaker e.g. there's a triple dead-heat for 1st place -- player A has 14 weekly wins and 8 wooden spoons (+6) -- player B has 7 weekly wins and no spoons (+7) -- player C has 11 weekly wins and 4 wooden spoons (+7). The podium positions are C-B-A on a count back.
Final Note:
  • While we are picking drivers for our teams, we are actually picking the car number the drivers are driving. If a driver is suspended for the race or has to leave the race before it's finished for whatever reason and someone else gets in their car to race it, anyone who picked the original driver of the car gets full points for where that car number finished. Last season Kyle Busch was suspended for a race Mike McDowell drove Kyle's #18 car for the race, people who has picked Kyle received the points which McDowell scored while in the #18 car.
illiniman14 is the defending titleholder; he won the 2011 comp. This year's comp is the 8th running of a Nascar comp; Sypher is the only player to have won this twice (and no-one has retained their title). Previous winners:

Have repaired my cars ...so will attempt to race with you folks (hopefully)...

Team Name: No Brakes (hopefully nobody has this name yet)

Driver 1: Carl Edwards
Driver 2: Matt Kenseth
Driver 3: Martin Truex Jr.
Driver 4: Kasey Kahne

Please let me know if this team is fine or if I need to change/replace anybody (one reason I did not enter last year was because I could not follow all those chase and replacement and point behind rules)

The Chase driver thing penalties are in place to encourage people not to just pick the top drivers, to take some risks on the up and coming ones.

Ozzz, you have Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhadt who were in the Chase last year and Greg Biffle and Brian Vickers who weren't in the Chase, so you would have no penalties, because you have the two free Chase drives.

LeoDaVinci has chosen three Chase Drivers, Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson and Kyle Busch as well as non Chase driver Kasey Kahne. So after his top three drivers are added up, there will be 5 points taken off of his total score.

If someone where to chose 4 Chase drivers they would have 15 points taken off their three driver score, minus 5 for the third driver and minus 10 more for the fourth driverin their starting line-ups.

So I am assuming these Chase drivers were from last year. What happens if this year after a few races, all 4 of Ozzz or my drivers are in this Chase? Do we attract the penalty then or because we chose them before the season started, we score the points as at start of season? Or do we have to change drivers the minute they enter this "Chase"?

Sorry I didn't catch this earlier ozz, but Vickers doesn't have a car to ride in for the Daytona, he was part of Red Bull Racing, which folded after last season, so the car he rode in last year isn't in the race either. I know you had Scott Speed on your team last year, but he was never on your starting team.

There was kind of a Jet Fuel fire of sorts on the track at Daytona with 41 laps left in the race, they will resume the race but they are in the middle of a long delay right now, so the update will come tomorrow night, rather then later tonight.

That was a very bad luck for your drivers, and for a bit there it looked like Bowyer might have been out of the race just past the halfway point as well.

Way too many crashes this week, they changed the rules to prevent extended tandem drafting, but it has led to a lot more wrecks and bigger ones from what I can tell.

All week the cars, which were changed to meet the new 2012 NASCAR specifications, have been wrecking with some real hard hits. This adjustment to the NASCAR rules, which was made to stop double car drafting at tracks like Daytona and Talladega by lowering the rear of the car so that pushing car in the draft will overheat much faster, might need another adjustment if these hard hitting wrecks will occur. Whereas NASCARs track record for safety is good, this tweaking of the cars isn't a safe one.

It didn't take long, Lap 2, for someone, rumor has is it was Elliot Sadler, to turn someone else sideways, Jimmie Johnson in this case, leading to a huge chain reaction. This took Sprint car rookie Danica Patrick off the track, Kurt Busch and defending champion Trevor Bayne too, while Johnson and David Ragan were out of the race. Ryan Newman brought out the second caution of the day with a flat tire and while on pit road one of his tires comes off while he was exiting his pit box, which caused him to stop his car and A.J. Almendinger to crash into the back of Newman and head to the garage. It didn't look like a hit worthy of going to the garage but it took Almendinger off the track. Lap 53 starts the green flag pit stops for cars that need bigger adjustments, lap 57 brings some of the bigger names down pit road, which includes teammate and drafting partners Jamie McMurray and Juan Pablo Montoya, the leaders come down on Lap 59. Just after all the drivers made pit stops a caution came out, with Jeff Burton in the lead, for debris on the track, which slowed tonight’s pack racing, broken up by the occasional two car drafting teams which can go a bit longer with a 20 degree lower night race and Danica rejoins the race during the caution. Matt Kenseth though is stuck with water pressure issues, with his gauges fluctuating wildly. Jeff Gordon's engine blows up on Lap 81, taking him out of the race, and Jeff commented on his water pressure gauge not showing him he was in trouble of overheating. The announcers mentioned the gauge issues could be from the cars sitting overnight and moisture being involved. Lap 88 has Marcos Ambrose behind Terry Labonte as Labonte spins out. The Lap 100 mid race bonus went to Martin Truex Jr., who was pushed by Denny Hamlin on the last lap past Greg Biffle, to earn that 200k. Lap 107 has Clint Bowyer, who was complaining about overheating recently, run out of gas while on the track, bringing out a long caution, little did we know what was coming up would make this caution seem speedy, because he was blocked from getting to pit road by passing cars when he went by on fumes. While pit road is closed Jeff Burton was forced onto pit road due to nearly running out of fuel himself, so he chose to take the penalty, rather than run out on the track. Denny Hamlin took control of the early part of the second half of this race. Lap 157 has David Stremme have something mechanical go wrong, causing him to crash and he's out of the race. At this caution Kyle Busch, Tony Stewart and Kasey Kahne are the only three to take four tires on this stop. During the caution Juan Pablo Montoya has something break underneath his car which goes out of control and crashes into the Jet dryer, that is used to dry the track as well as clear debris and is an actual old jet engine, leaving a line of jet fueled flame across the track. Juan Pablo got out of his car and the driver of the truck was helped out quickly. Juan Pablo had complained of a vibration in his car recently. There was over a two hour delay to put out the fire then clean and patch up the track, and a large amount of Tide detergent was used to help the track back into race able condition. The delay was under a red flag, which meant the cars had to stop in order on the track, no fixing or changes to the car. That was unfortunate for Carl Edwards as one of the tear offs were torn off his windshield during the flag, which means he is penalized and has to start at the back of the lead lap drivers. If the race had ended at this point, Dave Blaney would have won, Landon Cassill would have been second, Tony Raines third and David Gilliland fourth. After the restart in lap 177 Aric Almirola gets into Ricky Stenhouse Jr. , Almirola loses some control and cuts off two Casey Mears and Marcos Ambrose, causing them to hit each other and spin into the infield, but are both still drivable. They come out of caution with 19 to go, Joey Logano didn't maintain pace car speed, which usually means trying to save fuel, and was penalized to the back of the lead lap line. Big doings with 13 to go, Jamie McMurray blew a tire mid pack and spun around, spinning the most picked drive by us Kasey Kahne, and both of them hit into a few more cars each. Brad Keselowski, Regan Smith, Carl Edwards and Aric Almirola all took damage, and Almirola was done for the day. The race restarts with 7 laps to go, Kennseth in first, Biffle in second. Four laps to go has Ricky Stenhouse getting into Tony Stewart and then it all goes crazy again, Tony spins out across the track but avoids any real damage, Kyle Busch is in the infield, Ryan Newman takes damage, David Reutimann's day was over, but most drivers avoided serious damage to the car. They go green, white, checkered and Matt Kenseth is able to hold of Dale Jr. to take the win, with a little blocking help from team mate Greg Biffle.

Jimmie Johnson's team was dealt a crushing blow on Wednesday, as they were penalized 25 points, which puts them at a -23 after the first race and crew chief Chad Knaus is suspended for six races for improper modifications to Jimmie's #48 car, which were caught earlier in the week, before any of the races.

We lost 3 teams from last year, but more importantly welcome to, or back to, the competition srini701.

Gtho4 and his Fords dodge all the wrecks and jump out to an early lead taking the HoF this week with 125 points. Howie's drivers had rough days, with early an early accident, a blown engine, another wreck and to top it off his best driver of he week, Clint Bowyer, ran out of fuel at one point while on the track, but fought back for an 11th place finish. All that mess led to Howie taking the wooden spoon this week with 51 points.

Next race is Sunday at Phoenix.

Pole sitter Mark Martin gave up the lead to Tony Stewart during the first lap as he fell to the middle of the pack, not pushing the envelope yet. Lap 15, or 312, has the first caution of the day as Clint Bowyer has a tire go flat on him, 10 drivers chose not to make pit stops on this caution. The other driver from the first row, who started second, Kasey Kahne has some issues in lap 28 as he loses control and hits the wall good, no need for caution, but a lot of work needed on Kahnes car including suspension work. Just a few laps later Clint Bowyer has the same tire get cut down on him again, he only glances the wall, but something is rubbing the tire down fast. Lap 60 has a caution for debris, which will help the drivers who stayed out on lap 15. In lap 112 Casey Mears spins out on his own, hitting the wall bad, taking heavy damage to the car. Soon after A.J. Almendingers gets loose causing Paul Menard to hit the back or him and Jamie McMurray to hit the back of Menard. Jimmie Johnson has some extra pit time during this caution. This quick caution caused a few cars to stay out, and they ended up making green flag stops, so there were two different fuel strategies going on now. Jamie McMurray had smoke coming out of his exhaust on lap 213, meaning engine issues. Lap 228 has a debris caution. Lap 247 has David Reutimann with engine trouble as he goes smoking into the pits, but not before bringing out the caution. Tony Stewarts turned off his car but it wouldn't refire, so he had to be pushed to pit road. Marcos Ambrose is next to have engine trouble on lap 293 and he had been running in 3rd place. Heading into the last few laps, Denny Hamlin was trying to hold off Kevin Harvick, and Harvick ended up running out of fuel but held on for second place. Carl Edwards also ran out of fuel on the last couple of laps.

BxBarracuda has all three of his drivers in the top 5 and takes this week’s HoF with a 117. Howie scored 41 more points than last week, but was unable to avoid his second spoon in a row.

Gtho4 and Howie held their positions, while everyone else moved up or down slightly.

Gtho4 held onto first place, but only by one point now.

Next race is Sunday at Las Vegas.

Not sure why it took me this long to catch it, but I'm not really sure my 102 and 112 scores really add up to 124.

Another Fix, I forgot Keselowski was in the Chase last year, so I had 3 Chase drivers on my team this past week and have to take 5 off my socre.

Dale Jr. took the lead on the first lap and held it until he chose to pit a bit earlier than most at lap 45, of 267, and he narrowly avoided going a lap down, Kurt Busch wasn't as lucky, as the first caution came out as they were in the pits for Timmy Hill hitting the wall. Junior made it ahead of leader Kevin Harvick when he exited pit row, but Kurt didn't, putting him a lap behind. Dale Jr. led the first almost all of the first 70 laps of the race of this race which was at times affected by 15 mph winds on the track. Lap traffic was something to deal with during long green flag runs, as well as some debris which stuck on Tony Stewart’s grille, costing him a few places before he could get it off. David Reutimann has issues on lap 72 bringing out a caution that helps David Ragan lead some laps as he stayed out on the track. This is when Dale Jr. finally loses the lead and he falls back to 16th as he took 4 tires while all those ahead of him, other than Ragan, only took 2. Another long run had Jeff Gordon, who had also taken 4 tires and lost track position last pit stop, coming in at lap 119, starting the next round of green flag stops, which has everyone pitting by lap 125. Travis Kvapil's engine blew on lap 127, having him leave the race and Kyle Busch back to the pits with some collateral damage. Tony Stewart, Matt Kenseth and Jimmie Johnson took turns in the lead, with Greg Biffle and Kevin Harvick hanging with that lead pack. Lap 173 has more green flag pit stops starting and they ended with lap 179. Laps 204 and 224 had debris cautions. Lap 244 had Landon Cassill, Travis Kvapil's team mate, blowing his engine and the leaders didn't pit on this caution. Brad Keselowski who worked his pit stops to get to the front had a horrible restart and fell like a rock through the pack. It had become a case of Jimmie Johnson trying to track down Tony Stewart for the lead at this point. Lap 254 has Kurt Busch blowing a tire from debris and crashing, out of the race. Right after the restart his brother Kyle also gets a flat tire and spins out taking some damage and bringing out another caution. Restart with 4 to go and this proves bad for Matt Kenseth as Rousch Fenway drivers, Kenseth, Greg Biffle and Carl Edwards battled for top 5 position, with Kenseth getting squeezed back then sucked into the wall by a passing Kasey Kahne, messing up a day where he ran top 5 almost the entire race. Tony Stewart holds off a great run by Jimmie Johnson to take the win.

BxBarracuda had the race winner and the #5 and #6 finishers on his squad for his 2nd HoF in row with 126 points and Denny Hamlin cooled off a bit, which hurt George95's team and had him taking the spoon this week with 86.

Gtho4 holds his lead over ozzz2002 by 4 points now and Bx moves into third. Illiniman14 and srini701 had the same drivers in their top 3 and we had the first tie of the year. Howie72 pulled out of last place with a 2nd place finish this week and George95 took the bottom spot, but it's still very early in the season.
Kasey Kahne is looking like last year’s Jamie McMurray, a non-chase driver a lot of us have picked to do big things this year, but hasn’t quite gotten it all together yet, as he has last year.

Current NASCAR points leader is Greg Biffle with 125 points, and he has finished in the top 5 every race so far.

Next race is Sunday at Bristol.
