This year's Madness comp will be at the same site as last year. A bracket for 2012 has been setup once again at cbssports.com .. for those of us who played last year, you're half-way there, as invite emails have been sent by csbssports.com to all of last year's participants (using last year's email addresses); the email shows your reg'd ID.

The scoring system remains unchanged. There are 63 games in this comp; we pick all of them in one go on the cbssports.com website: 1st Round (32 games) : 1 pt 2nd Round (16 games) : 2 pts 3rd Round ( 8 games) : 3 pts (regional semis ) Sweet Sixteen 4th Round ( 4 games) : 4 pts (regional finals) Elite Eight 5th Round ( 2 games) : 6 pts (national semis ) Final Four 6th Round ( 1 game ) : 9 pts (national final) Seedings: additional pts added for each correct pick, being the team's seed.

2012 Tipping Comp

if you'd like to join the Madness tipping comp but do not have a cbssports ID, there's a link on that page to register. You must have a cbs ID to play in this comp! Please note - you may, but don't have to, use your real name to register (surname, first name); but pick something for those two fields that looks like your FT username (so that we know who you are).
this also applies to those who played last year, but can't remember their ID and/or have changed their email address and thus can't retrieve their password (which they've forgotten) .. you will need to re-register.
please check your reg'd email address in your account settings/profile after you login.

This year's tipping comp is the 11th edition of March Madness (strewth, where have those 11 years gone). No one has retained their title in this comp, and no one has won it twice (but some have been on the podium twice). The defending title-holder is N-Bomb (silver and bronze went to rxbigdawg and toocool4u .. the winner of the 2008 comp, ralzzz, holds the record for the biggest winning margin (see summary tables of last 10 comps at end of this post) .. and doomed won bronze that year the hard way; he failed to pick any of the Final Four! Howie72 holds the record for the most correct picks with 51/63, achieved in the 2007 comp.

The Madness starts on Thu 15-Mar-2012 and the final is on Mon 2-Apr-2012. The bracket will open for tipping when the field is inserted by cbssports.com, which should happen on Sun 11-Mar-2012. However, the last four teams to qualify will not be known until Monday and Tuesday (they will enter the comp as the four #16 seeds). btw a #16 seed has never won a game against their #1 seed opponents since the NCAA started the current Madness format in 1985.

Last Four play-in: Tue/Wed 13/14 March First Round: Thu-Fri March 15-16 Second Round: Sat-Sun March 17-18 Third Round: Thu-Fri March 22-23 Fourth Round: Sat-Sun March 24-25 Final Four: Saturday 31 March Championship: Monday 2nd April Final Four play-offs at Louisian Superdome, New Orleans LA

Deadline: cbssports/com will close the bracket of 63 picks at noon EDT on Thursday 15 March.

CBS will send out an alert when the bracket is available on Sunday 11th March local time New York. The deadline for submitting brackets is Noon DST NY time (GMT -4 hours) on Thursday 15th March ... prior to the start of Round 1 games. That's 10:00 am FT time Thursday, 4:00pm UK Thursday, 3:00 am Sydney time Friday.

Last year we had 19 runners .. and this year 15 of us are back for another dose. No shows are linkan, rxbigdawg, Sarah606 and szabs. Three of them signed in over at cbs but must've missed the deadline for picks.

This is the 11th edition of the Madness tipping comp. The first 10 were run from 2002 to 2011 and produced 11 different winners. At the end of Day One we have the defending titleholder, N-Bomb, in the bottom half of the table.

Positions #1 through to #3 are occupied by players who have never won this .. ditto three of the four in equal 4th .. illiniman14, the 4th player in equal 4th, is the highest placed previous-winner (he won gold two years ago in 2010).

There were three upsets on Day One .. seven of us picked the win by 11th seed Colorado, and 3 players had the hide to pick #12 VCU to beat #5 Wichita State!

dg_dave picked 15/16 .. he missed the win by Iowa State.

One player has already lost one of his picks for the Final Four. That's 16 games out of the way .. there are 63 games in this Madness!

I've had a quick look through prior March Madness results and we've had 15/16 picks in the first two days before this year's comp.

Norfolk State over Missouri, Ohio just about to polish off Michigan, Duke's having problems with Lehigh Brackets = Busted. Before this year's comp, just four #15 seeds had won a March Madness game. Day Two saw two #15 seeds win! No-one was brave enough to pick either win.

Only two of us kept our position in the Standings from yesterday (both in the bottom half) .. aka no-one in the top half of the table retained their position from Day One. No wonder they call this Madness.

Some semblance of sanity on Day 3 .. no upsets on Day 3. All the winners were the seeds which should've won .. srini701 picked 7/8 (he missed the Marquette game) and moved up into 3rd place.

Apart from the top two and the bottom two, no-one retained their spot from yesterday. None of the top three have won this comp before, so we still may see our 11th winner in 11 years .. 4th and 5th are prior winners (Howie72 won this in 2002 and illiniman14 won it in 2010).

Yesterday 6 of 15 had four live picks for the Final Four .. today we're down to just four players with four live picks! One bloke has just the one, and another has just two live.

There are 23 games left in this Madness, and no-one has 23 live picks. Best is Howie72 and jonnowales with 20 live, and lowest is ozzz2002 with 11 live and gtho4 with 14 live. It won't be long before their mpt is less than the leader's and these two blokes are officially/mathematically out of the running.

Day 4 saw two games picked by no-one and best picks of just 4/8. George95 replaces theomarch at the top of the pile .. he was one of three to pick #11 NC State to beat #3 Georgetown. This result saw one player lose his winner and two players lose a Final Four pick .. 8 of 15 still have a complete set of live picks for the finalists x2 and the winner; and Geroge95 is one of them.

Yesterday 4 of 15 had four live picks for the Final Four. Today we're down TO none! No-one has a complete set of picks for the Final Four.

There are 15 games left in this Madness, and no-one has 15 live picks. Three players have 13 live ones .. srini701 and Howie72, who are running 3rd and 4th, plus LoeDaVinci, who's bringing up the rear.

ozzz2002 retires to the gallery to watch the remainder of the comp .. he cannot catch George95 even if every one of his remaining live picks x6 are correct (his mpt is less than the 195 pts accumulated by George95). These four players have an mpt < 10 pts more than George95' current pts: toocool4u, dg_dave and LeoDaVinci. They're next!

All of our picks for the remaining 15 games (live and dead) are set out in this post, above and below .. the winners of the 8 games in the next round (3rd Round) progress as the Elite Eight, the winners of the 4 games in the 4th Round are the Final Four, and the winners of the two semi-finals (5th Round) and the final (6th Round) are in the last two columns of the Standings table. Assuming I didn't make a typo entering things: Click to reveal.. -Only 6 people actually have a shot of winning at this point (though some of us still might make the podium): George95, themonarch, srini701, Howie72, illiniman14, and jonnowales. Most of the rest of us have enough picks overlapping with George95 that we can't catch him even if everything goes our way. N-bomb can catch George95, but he matches all of his remaining picks but one with srini701. -Jonnowales has the narrowest road left to follow...Kentucky and Louisville must win next round for him to stand a chance. Illiniman14 needs an Ohio St. win over Cincinnati, but everybody else can afford to have one game go poorly (of course, when does only one game go poorly...) -There's still a chance we could finish with 4 people tied at the top. -If every game was 50/50 and everybody's tiebreakers were equally likely to win, the odds at the moment would be themonarch: 42.91% George95: 32.65% srini701: 16.49% illiniman14: 4.21% Howie72: 2.99% jonnowales: 0.74%
