I'm not that religious, but I'm praying for a child in need of help.

Lana, a student at North Rockhampton High School was recently diagnosed with the flu. It was originally thought a normal case, sore throat, fever, sneezing, etc.

However, Lana began to exhibit serious symptoms. She collapsed at home and flown to Brisbane in a critical condition a couple of weeks ago. Over the last couple of weeks she has been put into an induced coma and put on life support, but she hasn't improved. Her brain is now bleeding and her liver has shut down, along with lots of other complications.

I've just received an email that her parents now have to make the tragic decision whether to have her life support turned off.

I've never taught Lana, but once a week for the last few years I've had bus duty one afternoon a week. Lana would catch the last bus of the day. Every week, Lana and I would sit down and have a laugh and a chat while we waited.

I know this is a site where we have lots of fun, it is called funtrivia after all, but I know you’ll want to wish such a wonderful child well and hope that a miracle occurs, and that I'll see Lana again, once a week waiting for the bus

That's truly awful and I hope and pray that she pulls through. What a devastating decision for her poor parents.

Oh, that's just awful. I'll put in a prayer for her and her family.

I'll think good thoughts and hopeful and empathetic prayers for all.

I have great news!

The doctors decided to give Lana another 24 hours before they gave any more advice to the parents.

We received this news late this afternoon (Friday) from the Principal:

Today (Friday afternoon) Lana has for the first time this week, made significant ground. Although she is still critical, she has started communicating (not talking), waving, crying, understanding who is there and what is being said, her liver has started working and is cleaning her system, one kidney is slow but is starting to improve, her heart has improved. Her brain has stopped bleeding and the swelling is going down.

They are not sure if there has been any brain damage.

Shane said that her parents are touched by the school contact/messages and was very appreciative when we told her we are raising funds for them. Shane will contact me after the weekend to provide an update.

I'm so glad I live in a country where we have such great medical treatment.

That's awesome..she has a long road ahead, but it sounds like she has made her first step.

I don't know if this is linked to a news story about a really bad flu virus going around that is even crippling young people. They usually recommend old and sick people get flu jabs but this year I think everyone should give it serious thought.

I'm definitely not one for needles, I usually pass out after having one, but I'm seriously thinking that maybe I should go to the doctor and have the flu jab.

It's probably a good idea to get the shot, if just to ensure that you don't infect others.
