The ten 3rd Qualifying Round matches (aka the play-off round) were completed last week on Wednesday night 29th August. The 10 winners joined the 22 teams who were exempt until the Group Phase. The draw for the group phase took place on Thursday 30th August .. if you've got a few hours to kill, you can read the complete details of the qualifying & exemption procedures here : Regulations of the UEFA Champions League 2012-13. Most of the 32 teams in this year's comp are familiar names, but there are a few qualifiers whose names will be alien to most of us (see next post).
The group stage commences in a bit over a fortnight on Tuesday 18th September (the first round of the tipping comp), and the final will be played on Saturday 25th May 2013 in London at Wembley Stadium (the 19th round of the tipping comp). There's a two month mid-winter break, for all of us to grab some R&R, between the last round of the group phase on Wednesday 5th December and the start of the KO Round on Tuesday 12th February 2013. |
Rules: they're the same as last year, and the year before. The rules for this comp are simple: points
default
full-time
upsets
perfect picks
other bonus pts
dead-heats | one point for each correct pick.
if you forget to pick, the away teams are all yours (ineligible for bonus pts).
picks are H-x-A at full-time; extra time or penalty shootouts are ignored.
if you pick a game solo (or one of two), you score a bonus point.
8/8 scores a bonus point. You also receive a knighthood from Her Majesty.
no one picks a win, whoever picks a draw.
no one picks a draw, whoever picks the upset win.
if you pick all home teams (or all bar one), you're ineligible for bonus pts.
weekly wins vs. wooden spoon countback determine podium finishes;
if they're identical, bonus pts will be used. |
Deadline: is always kick-off in the first game of the round. Please don't wait until the death, as there are 4 time zones in Europe, and there's a good chance you'll get it wrong! If you post your tips 4 hours before the scheduled kick-off time for games in the UK, you should be safe. No one has successfully defended their title .. and doomed is the only player who's won this more than once. He's been on the podium three times (all gold). Sypher has stepped up onto the podium 4 times (all silver). Prior winners ElfTwinkle, gtho4, ozzz2002, KrivoyRog and PaulE can win this a second time, ditto Dizart (who'd become the first to retain their title) .. or will this season see a new name etched on the trophy?
Dizart won it last year by a mere 2 pts from dg_dave .. illiniman14 collected bronze by a single point in front of a three-way tie for 4th between PaulE, Howie72 and gtho4. Three players finished last year's comp without a wooden spoon .. their spoon-less streaks will continue into this year's tipping comp:19 weeks : dg_dave
27 weeks : PaulE (last spoon was in wk 11 of previous season 2010-11)

. This year's comp has 18 runners, which is one more than last year .. triviapaul is a no-show and wwe84 & doomed are the new recruits.
doomed is an echo from the past .. he's the only tipster who's won gold in this comp more than once. He'll get on famously with N-Bomb, another Gooner; they can remind each other about The Invincibles of 2003-04 and reminisce.
Five of the eight games were picked by most of us .. 3 of 18 picked the away win by Schalke 04 (earning themselves a bonus point), no-one picked the draw in Milan (George95 was the only one who didn't pick a home win by AC Milan, and earnt himself a bonus point). He refused to disclose the brand of his dart-board when interviewed by the local BBC radio station for their afternoon sports programme.
Manchester City broke the 0-0 deadlock in the 69th when Dzeko scored, but Real Madrid equalised within a minute. City hit the lead again when they scored with 5 minutes to go .. wwe84 and N-Bomb were looking at two points for their away pick (one for the pick plus a bonus pt), but Real Madrid equalised again (this time it took them two minutes) .. now it's KrivoyRog, George95 and gtho4 who were looking at two points, for their draw pick, as the scoreboard still showed 2-2 at the end of 90 minutes. Cristiano Ronaldo ruined it for the three of us when he scored in injury time!
dg_dave finished last year's comp without a wooden spoon. His streak has ended with a wooden spoon in Week 1. PaulE and Howie72 also finished last year's comp without a spoon .. their spoon-less streaks now stand at 28 consecutive weeks and 35 weeks.
Dizart, the defending title-holder, has already jumped into a share of the lead with szabs .. btw her local team won! Will this season see, for the first time, the defending titleholder win gold? The second round of the tipping comp is tonight. |

11 of 18 players all had the same score 4/8. For the 3rd straight week we had a game picked by no-one; except that this week it was two games.
The four-way tie out front is no more .. szabs is now out front all on her lonesome, one point ahead of the new occupant of 2nd place. The 12 players running 3rd to 14th are separated by a mere 2 points (that's 2/3rds of the field).

Last week BxBarracuda picked 6/8 (two were solo picks) and flew up the table from 14th to 2nd. This week it's another 6/8 (one was a solo pick) for back-to-back wins.
He's now joint leader with szabs! The two leaders have opened up a mini-breakaway of 2 pts over the rest of the field.
For the first time this season we had no games picked by no-one. Between us we hit pay dirt on every game.
The 12 players running 3rd to 14th are now separated by 4 pts (it was 2 pts last week).

szabs continues to set a cracking pace out front as she extends her lead over Dizart and srini701, who are still equal second, to 4 pts .. she picked Arsenal to lose at home! Neither doomed nor N-Bomb were happy to see the Gunners lose.
Manchester City also lost .. no-one picked that result. Three players collect a gimme point each as they had the hide to pick a draw: ozzz2002, srini701 and wwe84 (two of these three were wooden spooners).
ozzz2002 and George95 have fallen down the table again, and set new low-water marks for the season.

. During the last ten years we've run the Champions League comp, we've had just six perfect picks (by five different players). It's now seven perfects .. N-Bomb is this week's winner with a perfect 8/8. The Honour Roll still has the same five names on it, as N-Bomb has done it before!
With that humungous effort he flies up the table from 10th to third place! He also collected a bonus point, his first for the season; which completes that column in the standings.
It should be noted that this is his 3rd consecutive weekly win .. four weeks ago he was running 3rd last, 2 points off the bottom and 9 pts behind the leader!
dg_dave and gtho4 collect a wooden spoon each for the paltry efforts of 3/8.
szabs retains her lead for the 10th straight week .. szabs and Dizart have opened up a slight gap out front over the rest of the field, where 3 points covers the next 9 players (that's exactly half the field). Three points also covers the remaining 7 runners.
