I don't think the first person can be determined since a whole handful of badges (like the Experienced series) were awarded retroactively on the day they were created. All persons receiving a badge from whichever retroactive query was run first would have received theirs at the same time.

According to the Wayback Machine, badges were added in October 2006, with the oldest documented lineup dating from 8 Nov 2006 and showing the following 31 badges:

Experienced / Veteran / Old Timer

Word Wizard
I'm the Smartest
Best in Class
Immortal
Crossword
Endurance
Gold Madness
Daily Game
Impossible!

Point Apprentice / Duke / Prince / King / God

Bonus 1 / Bonus 2

Author / Prolific Author / Super Author

Editor's Choice
Cool Quizzes
Crossword Author

AskFT Researcher
Chatterbox
Leader
Volunteer
Diplomat
Lucky Ducky

A snapshot of the announcement board from Nov 2006 further shows that Diplomat and the point-related badges were created on Oct 29, after the rest, leaving 23 badges as the most likely initial set, created Oct 22, 2006:

Experienced / Veteran / Old Timer

Word Wizard
I'm the Smartest
Best in Class
Immortal
Crossword
Endurance
Gold Madness
Daily Game
Impossible!

Author / Prolific Author / Super Author

Editor's Choice
Cool Quizzes
Crossword Author

AskFT Researcher
Chatterbox
Leader
Volunteer
Lucky Ducky

As a further interesting observation from my travels down the Wayback Machine, our 20-category setup is now constant for over 8 years, with the most recent changes (made in February or March 2004) being the merger of Seasonal into (likely) General and the split of Video Games away from Hobbies.

11 of the categories have existed since the creation of Quizzyland: Animals, Brain Teasers, Entertainment, For Children, General, Geography, History, Literature, Movies, Music and Sports.

Dave, I know where it finally wound up, but at that time, it doesn't look like it was moved there since the number of quizzes in World did not increase (it actually decreased) between these two snapshots. However the number in General did go up by about what was to be expected from a merging of Seasonal there.

From memory, Seasonal went directly to World. I'm almost sure I was still editing in General at that time, and don't recall the Seasonal quizzes coming in. I think it is possible that some quizzes moved from World to General at the same time - possibly the UK/US/other country specific type of quiz. I could be wrong, but that sort of shuffle would account for the numbers you are seeing.

I have also used the Wayback Machine to figure out when each badge first came into existence. For the most part, I have all the dates and badges listed.
To expand on what WesleyCrusher already shared, what I have found was that the date for the first set of badges was October 21, 2006, and the badges were
Word Wizard, Prolific Author, Super Author, Immortal, Chatterbox, Old Timer, I'm the Smartest, AskFT Researcher, Point King, Crossword, Crossword Author, Leader.

The others he mentioned came at least one day later.

I'm not sure if I just didn't notice this but it appears that the Author badge (20 quizzes on-line) came at a later date than Prolific Author and Super Author. I know this holds true for the "points" badge (Apprentice, Duke, etc.) but I'm not sure if it holds true with the "authors" badge or with the Experienced / Veteran / Old Timer badges.

Buddy: It's interesting that your research is dating some of the badges to the 21st when Terry's announcement post puts the beginning of the badge system on the 22nd. What pages did you check on the WBM to get to these numbers? (I suspect these may have actually been awarded on the 21st in preparation for the release, that would also explain how Author and its higher companions could differ even though the graphic clearly points to all three having been released at once).

Liz: That would explain it. I couldn't imagine a good reason for a double move, so yeah, the move of some other subcat at the same time would make sense.

How do you guys find these figures? I thought it was an editor privilege or something, but Buddy seems to have found something as well. What am I missing here? :|

Somewhere somehow there's this site with all these archives and snapshots of FT before. I got there, then I've forgotten how. smile

There's a website called the Wayback Machine. Google it, and you can input any website you wish (not just FunTrivia) and it will show you the archives. Well, some of it, not every day has an archive, some days are no longer available, etc.

smellykelly you might like to go to the Quiz Authoring Q&A forum and start on the very first page which is from before the quiz side of the site started and then lots from when it had started, the very early days when you could count the number of quizzes was in the very low hundreds. It makes some interesting reading.
