Once again, thanks for your help Jakeroo. According to Wikipedia it couldn't be the oriental darter as they don't live in Western Australia. The Australasian Darter does, so it could be that. I'll definitely try find a good website, animals fascinate me so I'm always willing to add to my knowledge. smile I know a lot about other animals and some other birds (see "Who's the Expert?" wins wink ), just not as much about water birds.
Beautiful photo ClaraSue.

http://www.ozanimals.com/Bird/Darter/Anhinga/melanogaster.html

Daniel: According to the website above, the melanogaster variety is indeed found in many parts of Australia, including Western areas (although not terribly common around Perth). It's also the one most noted for the white stripe. We're not "supposed" to see Eastern Bluebirds or Red Cardinals in my part of Canada either, but we do on occasion : ) so I wouldn't necessarily take "wiki" as "gospel" LOL. In any case, good luck in your investigations.

These are my two pacific salmon that I caught off the coast of Bamfield British Columbia.
They are approximately 25 lbs each and while they didn't earn the "tyee" distinction (which means
anything over 30 lbs) they still warranted a wheelbarrow to bring them up from the dock lol
Sorry for the blurriness, but it was raining cats and dogs.

Oh, I like that a lot! Great atmospheric catch, Jakeroo.

Good sleuthing too. Looks like you two need to edit wiki now!

ClaraSue: Absolutely. You're in charge of the wine. Tell me when you two are arriving so we can pick you up at the airport. Don't worry, we have real vehicles now (we traded up on the dog sleds a few years back) : )

David: The geese did NOT make the picture. You did, with your very good "eye". And I like your last posting just as much (with no geese LOL!). Very tranquil. I'd love to sit on that bench and contemplate something (not my navel, am afraid what I might find in there lol).

Oh I don't know where to start. Everyone's pictures are fabulous, each month just seems to get better and better. I love seeing all the ones from overseas, I can travel the world without leaving my chair, and it's the only way I will see some of these places now. Satguru shows me places in the UK I never knew existed as well as ones I have just driven past without ever really looking at. This has to be the best and friendliest forum on FT.

We had this rather lovely cloud effect just as the sun was setting.

This is the best site on the whole web!

Love those clouds, Christinap! One of my favorite subjects is clouds at sunset and sunrise.

I like clouds, I often just sit in the garden for a few minutes when I'm out there watching them change shape and drift along. I'm rarely up in time for sunrise ones though ClaraSue!.

I've sent an email to a website, hopefully I get a reply soon. smile

Some bright colours on a pile of rocks which stretch out to the river. Not sure what their use is, I think its for fishermen because I often see people fishing on them. You can see the rocks I mean on my photo of the city on the "Picture My Record" thread.

Daniel, it is a darter and it is a male (the females have white bellies). The white streak on their head is a distinguishing feature of the Australian darter (Anhinga novaehollandiae). Cormorants and darters belong to the same family Phalacrocoracidae.

If you want to see the differences between the most common cormorants in Perth (the little black cormorant, the great cormorant, the pied cormorant, the black-faced cormorant and the little pied cormorant) and the darter, a really good book to look at is "A Field Guide to the Birds of Western Austalia" by GM Storr and RE Johnstone. It should be available in most libraries in WA.

Gasp!
I quite agree about it being the best Forum in FT
The joy is I never get a bit of trouble, nobody beating each other up, no Trolls etc ( well we get the odd Rabbit.) It is wonderful for me to be part of this marvellously friendly group of people.

This hilltop looks like it could be made from the same material as ClaraSue's Canyon Lake outcropping. This one is near Lockwood, Nevada. What you see is about 50 meters high.

Jakeroo, the steps are a recent addition. Earlier you just had to trek to the bottom and back up. wink It's amazing to see the locals including the elderly and kids go up and down without breaking a sweat.

Those are beautiful colours, Daniel. Amazing sunset, Howie! Clarasue, one of my close friends has just moved to Arizona and I'm looking forward to visiting her and seeing this beautiful place.

Love those ones, Clara, zorba and CmdrK.

Here's a Roseate Cockatoo (aka Pink and Grey Galah).

My last day in Toronto and first day in London did not involve much sleep. Awake all day in Toronto and catching a 7:30pm flight, arriving in London around 8am for another day of walking around before sleep at night. An 8 hour flight so by the time a meal at each end it did not leave much time for sleep. Anyway, I found my way to Hyde Park and came across Isis.
