I haven’t heard this song for years, but I can’t even think of it without laughing. The song is "Drift Away,” and even writing it has me in hysterics. I don’t know which version it was—but it doesn’t rreally matter. What does is, I worked with a young man who would sing the following lyrics:
Give me the Beach boys and free my soul.
(1) Young I may be, but even young people are entitled to their opinions.
(2)Attempting to silence me doesn't hurt me, but the silencer.
(3) I must remain true to myself.

Another misheard lyric! The line actually is, "Gimme the BEAT, boys, and free my soul".

John Henry Kurtz was the original singer of the song, but it was Dobie Gray's version that became a smash hit.
