World Cricket 2012 -- November 1, 2012 to end March 2013

Any takers for the 9th edition of World Cricket? I am returning with this comp after a fairly long break, and with some interesting past stats to entice you all into taking part in what promises to be a very exciting cricket season smile

1. Nobody has ever retained their title in the 8 editions this comp has been run....N-Bomb is the defending champion and Sypher, Howie72 and srini701 won the 3 editions before him. Can N-Bomb do the unthinkable in World Cricket?

2. The 2nd place winner on the last podium LeoDaVinci, is not even from a cricket-playing nation! Beginner's luck? We'll know this season if he returns...

3. 3 debutants among the 10 who played last season, including Leo, and the other 2 (Rossian and danielPoulsen) finished mid-table.

Plenty of cricket action over the next few months, starting with a series between Sri Lanka and New Zealand (from November 1). Other than West Indies, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, we will see all other teams in play here (maybe these teams too, if the schedule fits!)

You will as usual pick 5 players for Test matches and 6 for ODI series from the list of players I will provide and you score as many points as the runs/wickets by your selected player. A carefully chosen Trump player can double your points and boost your scores considerably. If you are not a regular visitor to the forums here, you can still lodge a team at the beginning of a series and allow it to score for you till a new series comes about.

Most threads won't be up till a few days before a match/series and the comp will also involve some unannounced series and some mega bonus rounds in between (where 2 matches start on same dates).

Shout your names here for what it's worth, so I know you will be there! Hoping to see a decent turn-around and to a good, fun competition...

Illiniman, these are different cricket series that will be played over the next 4 months. Not sure if they will even be telecast in US (unless you pay for them). You can follow scores on different websites if you wish.

I can recommend http://www.espncricinfo.com/ and http://www.cricketweb.net/index.php for you to follow scores of every match and series. Both are pretty good and most cricket sites are up-to-date in terms of teams, fixtures and scores.

BTW, espncricinfo has streaming of matches and there are plenty of other websites that stream matches live.

Did they cancel today's match?

When I checked ESPN site this morning it was raining and they had another 4 hours to start the match?

Always wondered why they have cricket in Sri Lanka only during the monsoon season!

Reverse spin? Bowling into a monsoon must do some crazy things to a ball...

  • Welcome to yet another edition of World Cricket. This season we go on till end of March 2013 and cover pretty much all international cricket played till then. 12 people lined up at the starting blocks this year, 2 more than last season.
  • BxBarracuda, illiniman14, wwe84 and underscored are the newcomers this year (welcome to the comp smile ) while DanielPoulsen and Rossian are the missing names from last season.
  • We chose a pretty bad series to start our season. Lots of rain meant the matches were mostly decided by the horrible Duckworth-Lewis method (don't ask me what it is!) and plenty of players didn't get a decent chance in 5 matches!
  • But cricket there was, and off the blocks in style is Sypher. He picks the first HoF for the season with some nice picks, including a well-chosen trump.
  • But he won't be too comfortable right away, with hardly anything separating the players (info for the newcomers: a lead of 250+ points can vanish in a round or two in this comp because of player forms, so nothing is finalized till almost the last few rounds smile )
  • So doomed watching the proceedings from the sidelines after lodging his tips for round 2, won't be too disappointed with the spoon score, since he knows the vagaries of this comp.

Round 2 scoring should be done soon too, but round 3 (India-England 1st Test) starts Nov 15. If you haven't lodged your tips for the round, please do so soon...

  • Welcome back to the World Cricket comp, doomed!
  • Sypher was over the moon when round 1 results were posted and rightly so...his trump this round, Michael Clarke scored a massive unbeaten double century and held 2 catches to boot and his score alone meant more than the total score of a couple of other players here. But Sypher also had Ricky Ponting and Dale Steyn in his side and that meant his eventual score, while very impressive, was not out of reach.
  • BxBarracuda proved that, with a humongous 900 points this round...he had all 3 big centurions of the Test, Amla, Kallis and Clarke in his side!!!!
  • Sypher is still in the lead but is again, NOT running away just yet....we had a surprise twin score this round when paper_aero and Howie72 both scored the exact number of points with 2 totally different sides! Pretty rare in this comp!
  • illiniman14 unfortunately picked 2 players who did not even play the Test and along with ozzz2002, picked a trump who had a forgettable Test. This meant he landed his first spoon for the season frown

Round 3 (India-England 1st Test) starts tomorrow (Nov 15). If you haven't lodged your tips for the round, please do so quickly...

  • India won the first Test against England, but not without having to struggle in the second innings. Alistair Cook produced a master class on a wicket where the demons were more in the minds of the English batsmen than the pitch, and scored his 3rd century in 3 Tests as a captain! Earlier, Cheteswar Pujara showed why he might be a worthy successor to Rahul Dravid in the number 3 spot in the Indian batting line-up with his second century in 6 Tests.
  • paper_aero picked Pragyan Ojha (of all the people!) as his trump, a move that paid rich dividends! paper_aero picks up a HoF for that move and shoots into the lead...srini701 trusted Pujara to come good and as a result, he's now in second spot.
  • On the other hand, quite a few of the selected trumps (Kohli, Tendulkar, Trott and even Kevin Pietersen) failed in this match, pulling down a few players here. Sypher, now moves to 4th spot, his lowest so far this season...wwe84 had Eoin Morgan, who did not even play, as his trump!
  • But this round's cake goes to poor ozzz2002, none of whose picks had a decent match!!!! ozzz picks up his first spoon, and pulls down not just himself, but also gtho4 and doomed, who both defaulted this round frown
  • underscored defaulted again...I will continue to score default for an entire series (in this case, the 2 series currently on) and remove the player from the scoring charts for the next series if they fail to lodge tips before then...

The next round (starting Thursday, Nov 22) is a "biggie" with both the Tests starting a day apart...things can turn very, very quickly if your picks start playing, so get in there and lodge your tips without waiting till the last minute...

That's it! I am no longer talking to Mr Tendulkar, and have crossed him off my Christmas card list.

smile smile Your selecting Tendulkar had anything to do with that Order of Australia, or did you really think Tendulkar and Ponting can still score double tons? smile

  • The Indian skipper Dhoni asked for a "turning wicket" and got his wish and his team promptly capitulated to the two England spinners Panesar and Swann crazy The series is tied 1-1 and with 2 matches to go, is worth watching now cool Unfortunately not one of us here picked Monty Panesar who took 11 wickets in the match (that's 220 points!)....
  • The other Test saw a debutant Du Plessis hold up the Australians' bid for a win even as Michael Clarke continued his absolutely brilliant summer...result: that series is still tied 0-0 with all to play for at Perth....Again, even more unfortunately, not one of us here had Du Plessis in our side and though 8 of us picked Clarke, none of us had him as our trump!!! confused
  • This meant we are all still pretty bunched up after 4 rounds...the top 3 retained their positions after round 3, and so did the last 3...but there was some movement in the middle of the table
  • doomed picked up his first HoF for the season with a fine set of picks (he would proably have scored more if he didn't have Sehwag as his trump). But both gtho4 and illiniman14 ran him pretty close this round...
  • LeoDaVinci did not lodge tips for the round but had teams for the previous 2 rounds, which scored for him this round. Imran Tahir, who replaced Vernon Philander scored for Leo this round. Leo's trump of Kevin Pietersen couldn't stop Leo from picking his first spoon for the season.

  • South Africa showed why they are the best Test side in the world with a clinical demolition of Australia in the final Test. They won by a whopping 309 runs with a day to spare, and the guard of honor they gave to poor Ponting in his final international innings was the only thing Ricky Ponting will want to remember of his final Test.....what a player! easily among the best batsmen of this or any generation and a most terrific competitor!
  • srini701 succesfully "jinxed" the Aussie skipper Michael Clarke, but seven of us still picked him as our trump...But Howie72 dared to be different and picked De Villiers as his trump this round. The move paid off most handsomely and Howie picks his first HoF this season and also moves past Sypher in the standings.
  • At the other end illiniman14 landed an unwanted second spoon as all his players (all in form over the first 2 Tests) fared badly...
  • There is little to separate the first 6 players here, but there seems to be a gap building after that...are we beginning to break away into 2 groups? Still feel it is a bit early to write this....

The next round will see the India-England 3rd Test from Wednesday Dec 5. If you haven't lodged your tips yet, don't worry, your last team from that series will still score for you....

I still say how can anyone score over 200 times?

If cricket is so similar to baseball, it can't be possible to score that many times. The highest score I've seen in a baseball game is 30 runs! (it was by the Texas Rangers too)
