Midnight Madness has come and gone, and we are closing in on the NCAA basketball season. This will be our first NCAA Basketball comp, and here are the rules: 1. One point per tip 2. Deadline will be midnight Friday FT time with a short grace period of 2-3 hours, except for week 1 which will be midnight Thursday (with grace period). Late tips get a 1-point deduction. 3. Default tips are road teams, or those listed first for neutral-site games. 4. Late starters will enter at the lowest score at that time, and after 4 weeks of not tipping you will be considered inactive. 5. End-of-season tiebreakers are HOF v. WS differential; then HOFs; then bonus points. - This comp is separate from the March Madness comp Bonus Points1. One point for solo picks or one of two 2. One point for picking 13+/15 3. Ineligible for bonus points if tipper picks all home teams or all but one -The team listed second is considered the 'home' team, even for neutral-site games.

The first-ever regular season NCAA basketball comp is up and running, and what a week to start it off. Two games played in an indoor sport were cancelled, and there were upsets galore - South Alabama took down Florida State, just like paper_aero predicted; George Mason edged Virginia, called by LeoDaVinci and gtho4; Bucknell went into hostile territory and took out Purdue as illiniman14 said; and Central Florida beat in-state rival South Florida as Sypher forecasted.
The Carrier Classic, first played successfully last year on the USS Carl Vinson, failed to live up to the hype this year. The Ohio State-Marquette game, supposed to be played on the USS Yorktown, was cancelled before the game tipped off due to condensation on the court. The Florida-Georgetown game on the USS Bataan got through the first half, before both coaches agreed to call the game due to condensation at the start of the second half. The Syracuse-San Diego State game on the USS Midway was postponed from Friday night to Sunday afternoon due to rain.
Srini wants his money back from gtho4 - clearly he sent the defective dartboard! gtho4 expertly predicted/threw his way to a HoF with 10, while srini701 sits in 10th. Reigning March Madness champ George95 is also in the mix, sitting 2 back from the early lead.
And because you're wondering, Illinois is 1-0

Reigning March Madness champ George95 is also in the mix, sitting 2 back from the early lead. You bet I do! He clearly kept the good board for himself ... On second thoughts maybe I will wait and see a couple more weeks before I ask for my money back... On another note, illini, the scores include the sole bonus points also? I would have thought gtho got 10 right and a sole point bonus, making it 11 points for him for round 1...

George95 claims the lead with a dominating HoF performance (and solo pick to boot), and was set to pick up the first perfect bonus until Belmont hang on to win Sunday night. On the other side of the spectrum, srini is still grumbling over the faulty dartboard (or maybe he keeps hitting the bullseye and that throws everything off), and picks up his first spoon, along with ozzz and wwe. LDV became our first default tipper, and slipped back from #2 to #14.
College basketball can produce some great teams from little-known places (or formerly unknown – looking at you VCU and Ohio U.), and we have seen several this week. Belmont, the third-largest college in Nashville, went to Stanford and fought off a second half comeback to beat a power conference team seemingly on the rise (or at least everyone but ozzz and srini thought). Bucknell, from Lewisburg, PA, now sits at 5-0 after taking out two tournament teams from last year – Purdue and NMSU. Who is this year’s Cinderella? That remains to be seen.
I thought you said we were tipping the big-name teams?
We’re considering Week 2 our “bracket buster” week, full of potential big names that could make a huge impact come March. Bucknell has already beaten Purdue this year; Ohio made the Sweet 16 last year before generously sending their head coach to Illinois ; everyone’s darling VCU should have another strong year after back-to-back NCAA tournaments, including one Final Four; and they will fight for the CAA title with Drexel , who matched VCU’s record last year but fell short of the NCAA tournament, going to the NIT quarterfinals instead; among others. Also, tournaments fill in the early schedule, meaning top matchups like Sunday’s Ohio State-Washington game can’t be known beforehand.
And thanks to a buzzer-beating three in OT, Illinois sits at 3-0.

Sypher makes his first HoF, nabbing 11 picks – only Colorado State tripped him up aside from the games nobody (or only one person) picked correctly. On that note, plenty of bonus points were up for grabs this week, but only wwe84 grabbed one for his gutsy pick of La Salle over Villanova. Elsewhere, George95 maintained his 1-point lead with another double-digit effort. N-Bomb gains the first gimme pick, failing to pick the UL-Lafeyette-Michigan State, but all other 14 tippers picked correctly.
Two ranked teams fell in our comp this week, as #24 Baylor was squeezed 63-59 by the College of Charleston, and powerhouse UCLA gave up an 18-point lead in less than 8 minutes to Cal Poly before going down 70-68. However, some favorites don’t like to mess around, and #1 Indiana destroyed, dismantled, and demolished Ball State 101-53.
Major early season tournament time is over, and with it the end of your humble organizer shaking his fist at the TV wishing we could have used oh so many games - #5 Duke topped #2 Louisville and #13 Missouri overcame a tough VCU team in the Battle 4 Atlantis; while #17 Gonzaga beat a tired Davidson team to win the Old Spice Classic. The Diamond Head Classic remains around Christmastime, but only contains 2 major programs.
That noise you heard from Hawaii the middle of last week? That was the Orange Krush cheering Illinois to the Maui Invitational Championship. They now stand 7-0 after a 3-pointer in the waning seconds over… Gardner-Webb

What do you get when you mix a rookie comp organizer with 347 teams? Mix-ups, that’s what. VCU was playing Belmont this week, but a slip of the mind or finger changed that to TCU. Future weeks have been checked, and it won’t happen again – I apologize for the mistake. For the record, VCU won 75-65.
George95 keeps his slim 1-point lead over gtho4, thanks to getting all 3 Sunday games correct. BxBarracuda, N-Bomb, dg_dave, and themonarch all came away with HoF performances, aided by a few upsets over the weekend. dg_dave, our native Texan, ended up bringing home the most points with the HoF as well as his upset pick of Baylor over #8 Kentucky in Lexington.
#15 Oklahoma State was also bitten by the upset bug, as they travelled to Blacksburg, VA, and were greeted with an 81-71 loss to a surprisingly undefeated Virginia Tech team. The #5 Louisville Cardinals knew that redbirds play well at the Yum! Center. Unfortunately, they played the Illinois State Redbirds, and clawed their way to a 69-66 win. Needless to say, with the Kentucky and Louisville games, Saturday was quite tense here in KY.
The Big Ten retained the Commissioner’s Cup in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge this year, despite the fact that it tied for the first time 6-6. One of those wins for the Big Ten? You guessed it, #22 Illinois (8-0) trounced Georgia Tech, and next week we all finally get to pick a Fighting Illini game as they take on a powerful Gonzaga team.

There we have it! Five weeks into the comp, we have not only our first near perfect bonuses, as four tippers got at least 13/15, but also our first near miss, as Howie72 shoots 14/15 with a HoF performance. Howie was only 4 points from a perfect entry, but Nevada went on the road and took down Washington 76-73. He also rockets up from ninth place to fourth just like that.
In a weekend a little light on top matchups (bear in mind that if not for a venue dispute during the offseason Kentucky and Indiana would have played each other), the only contest between two ranked teams finished with #13 Illinois chopping down the giants of #10 Gonzaga 85-74, in a result that has perhaps not fully sunk in for your comp organizer.
This week provided some great potential upsets, but other than the previously-mentioned two games, failed to deliver. Last year, Temple welcomed #3 Duke to town with a 78-73 upset. This year, the #2 Blue Devils got some revenge to the tune of 90-67. Colorado entered Saturday in the “also receiving votes” category of both major polls, but that likely won’t be the case next week, as #9 Kansas Rock-Chalk-Jayhawked them 90-54. #21 UNLV did receive a scare from California on the road, but a put-back with 0.9 seconds left on the clock gave them a 76-75 victory.
The perhaps-top 10 Illinois Fighting Illini have two tune-ups against Norfolk State and Eastern Kentucky this week, looking to go 12-0 for the first time since 2005-06.

George95 has decided he’s done with this ‘competition’ stuff, and he bolts out to a 5-point lead with a HoF near-miss, matched by N-Bomb. On the other side of the gamut, ozzz2002 picks up his second spoon, missing five of the eight games that matched up power conference teams against mid-majors.
Two fantastic games were featured in our comp this week. #1 Indiana faced Butler in Indianapolis, and while the Hoosiers were able to force overtime with a 3-pointer inside ten seconds in regulation, but with the game tied at 86 inside five seconds in the extra period, could not stop a layup from a former walk-on, and the Bulldogs took down the giants. Later on in the day, #7 Arizona led for just over a minute the entire game against #5 Florida, but that included when the clock hit 0:00, and they came out with the win.
With Indiana’s loss, Michigan will become the highest-ranked team in the Big 10, as they trounced West Virginia by 15 in Brooklyn. #6 Louisville faced a 16-point deficit during the first half, but got it down to 7 by halftime and beat Memphis 87-78. Many other upset bids came well short, as most favorites took care of business this week.
#10 Illinois will face undefeated Eastern Kentucky on Sunday evening, followed by a week of finals before we see them again in this comp in the Braggin’ Rights Game in St. Louis against #12 Missouri.

Another week, another big upgrade to the lead for George95. A strong performance puts him up by 7 over the rest of the field, while the next 7 spots after that are separated by 7 as well. Meanwhile, Sypher laughs in the face of ranked teams, selecting two top-10 upsets by picking both Temple and Kansas State. On the other end of the spectrum, with a second straight spoon ozzz2002 is allowing wwe84 to catch back up to the field.
A host of upsets littered the field this week. Temple surprised everyone by upsetting Duke last year, and followed it up this year by taking down #3 Syracuse. #8 Florida goes down to Kansas State; a mini-upset put #9 Kansas over #7 Ohio State; Dayton took down everyone’s darling Murray State; and of course the granddaddy of them all. Somehow, someway, #12 Missouri wins their 4th-straight Braggin’ Rights Game over #10 Illinois.
Not every top-10 team had a bad weekend, though: #4 Louisville crushed Western Kentucky 78-55. Outside of the comp, #1 Duke also demolished Elon 76-54. Why bring that up?
A bold pick by a bold man.
Due to the “picking against Illinois” rule, dg_dave gets his score reset back to zer- no, what’s that? He gets a bonus point?! Hmmm, the comp organizer should look into some rule changes. The now not-so-undefeated Fighting Illini are back into action after the holidays, taking on Auburn on Dec. 29th.

I have to root for my parents' home state...it's just too bad that the Illini fell to them. It's too rare a team goes xx-0 in a basketball season anyway.

There were HoFs galore this week, from the front of the field to the back. The top 2 retain their position with 11/15, while wwe84 gets out of the back of the field with his first HoF performance, as well as BxBarracuda, who moves back into the middle of the field. LeoDaVinci and dg_dave both pick up their first spoons.
At the top of the rankings, #1 Duke seemed to be safe against Santa Clara, but the two teams were tied at 45 with 15 minutes left. Following a 29-15 run, the Blue Devils escaped with a comfortable victory. The upset bug almost struck #4 Louisville as well, but they beat Kentucky for the first time since 2009, edging out their cross-state rival by 3. Not everyone was immune though, as #20 UNLV went to Chapel Hill and led for only 29 seconds in a loss to North Carolina.
The only underdogs in our own field that yielded bonus points were a decisive 12-point margin for the College of Charleston over Vermont and those brainiacs of Harvard tripled their way to victory with 10 3-pointers against California.
And #12 Illinois (as well as the vast majority of other teams) starts conference play this week. They have a match against much-despised Purdue before we pick the matchup against #10 Ohio State, who is looking for revenge following a huge upset in Champaign last year.
