Hmmmmm...you should try and see a cricket for at least a few minutes if possible...maybe on youtube?

Test cricket: 5 days of 90 overs each (that's 540 balls/deliveries per day)...you can score in cricket in 1s, 2s 3s, 4s or 6s...unlike baseball where one hit over the park is a homerun (and a score of 1 or max of 4 if the bases are full), here you have a max of 6. In cricket an innings last till 10 people are out, not 3...still confusing? try and catch some action on espncricinfo if there's a match streaming or on youtube smile

You lost me right there...what is an over? The only "over" I know is the preposition (over a bridge, over a barrel, etc.) Do they throw the ball over 90 times? confused

The only thing that makes sense is that you get 3.333333... times the outs. But still, 200/300/400 runs in two innings?

An over is 6 bowls - so they throw it 540 times. The first match I ever tried to watch was test cricket... BIG mistake. I'll stick to 20/20.

I could see a major league pitcher throw 540 pitches...yeah right! wink

Guess it's just too confusing for this Yank!

Another major difference is the scoring area. In baseball, the only balls that score are in an arc between 1st and 3rd base, about 90 degrees. Anything outside that area does not count. In cricket, there are NO 'off-limit' areas, so if a ball is hit over the wicketkeeper's (aka catcher), it is still live. Most cricket grounds in the world would be at least three times the area of a baseball field, which makes scoring a bit easier.

Also, a run in baseball involves running 90*4= 360 ft; a run in cricket is the length of the pitch- 66ft. As Srini touched on, if a batsman hits the fence, it counts as 4 runs, and over the fence is 6.

mate, have a read of this:
This short explanation will help you understand the gentleman's game.

Quote:
Although it may be difficult to take seriously a game which includes jargon like "silly mid off" (a fielding position) and "out for a duck" (bowled out on the first ball), cricket is in fact, a sport with a massive International following.

This may be surprising as the game has a reputation for being fiendishly complicated, but as the following humorous exposition, "cricket as explained to a foreigner," shows, cricket is actually simplicity itself.

"You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he is out. When they are all out, the side that's been out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out.

"When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out, he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who are all out all the time, and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game."

I hope this will help you understand cricket.

Cricket rules not that all confusing!

Yep...thanks George smile...Dave will NEVER try to understand the game now smile

Ozzz got it right about the runs and the field, Dave...maybe that will help you understand why there are so many "runs" in cricket smile

yes, illiniman, stick to 20-20...fun to watch, all slam-bang, but it's still cricket all right and you will at least know how the game is played smile

And they do not use the same bowler (pitcher). Out of the eleven players on a team, there would be 4 or 5 specialist bowlers, and maybe a couple more that can bowl if required. There are two main types of bowlers- fast bowlers, and spin bowlers. One will try to get the batsman out with pace (up to around 160kph) and the other will try to fool the bat with movement and spin.

A bowler is only allowed one over (6 balls) in succession and another bowler has a turn. Two good fast bowlers operating together can break a batting team apart (google 'Lillee and Thompson'!). The absolute maximum number of overs by a single bowler would be 45, but it is rather uncommon for a captain to use the same one all day. A spinner may do 30 overs (180 balls) or so in a day, but a quick would usually do less.

Confusticated yet? smile

Some of it makes a little more sense, like the runs scored. Sounds like the field is around 900-1200' instead of the baseball sized 325-400'. The fast bowlers throw about the speed of Verlander in the 8th and 9th inning (~100mph).

I think we might need one or two, too, after that dismal Test against South Africa. Bring back Thommo! smile

  • India got walloped by England in the 3rd Test and have lost back to back home Tests for only the 3rd time in the last 10 years frown The team is just not good enough with the bat, or the ball or in the field, and the tragedy is, we don't even have replacements who can step up frown
  • N-Bomb had a massive round there and jumped into second spot, a season high for him...Sypher also had a good round there and moved up
  • srini701's new "formula" exploded in his face, leaving him with a red face and his first spoon for the season, as he drops 3 places on the ladder
  • underscored will drop off the scoreboard if they fail to lodge tips for the next round...will it be ozzz2002, doomed or wwe84 in the cellar at the end or round 7? As interesting a battle at the bottom of the table as at the top!

The next round is again a double-header, so plentttyyy of points to win or lose....a new Test series begins, so if you don't lodge a team, remember will only score a 0 for that Test (coz you will still have a default India-England team scoring in one Test).

So get in there well before Thursday and please lodge your teams if you haven't done so already...

  • I was in mourning since Monday, hence did not post the results immediately frown ....India lost a Home Test series for the first time in more than 8 years, it's clear Dhoni's shelf-life as India's captain is over and yet, we cannot do anything about it, all my picks bombed badly and the trumps I choose are either failing miserably or worse still, walking away injured frown frown
  • India were outplayed on all fronts - batting, bowling, fielding, captaincy and thoroughly deserved to be beaten by a very professional and competitive England side...I can foresee a defeat against Australia too in February at this rate frown
  • Australia meanwhile won their first Test for the season but are down a fast bowler (srini managed to jinx and put Hilfenhaus out of the whole series jus by picking him as his trump!). Australia will possibly be without Michael Clarke too for the Boxing Day Test
  • 5 people managed scores of over a 1000 points here and we have a new leader...N-Bomb becomes the third player on top of the leaderboard as paper_aero slips badly...
  • BxBarracuda picks up his second HoF for the season with a very well-crafted team and he also moves back into second spot...whatever made LeoDaVinci pick Trott as his trump worked, as Leo also made a huge splash this round.
  • Ozzz2002 managed to have 3 players this round who did not score him a single point, including a trump player!!! and he still beat srini701 by a handsome margin crazy mad

The next round is the Boxing Day Test from December 26 and if you don't want to change your team, you will still score some points from the previous team...but remember, Australia is likely to have some changes to their side...

<<Edited to update score of Ozzz, as I had Ian Bell's total wrong...Can't change scoring table below as it is a huge task smile >>

  • Australia duly crushed a hapless Sri Lankan team in less than three days to go 2-0 up in the 3 match series. But their team selections continue to puzzle everybody...
  • An injured Michael Clarke was given time till the last minute to prove his fitness and he led the side (with yet another century in the match)...but Mitchell Starc, who took 6 and 5 wickets in his 2 previous Tests, was replaced by Mitchell Johnson....
  • That direct replacement helped 6 of us here as Mitchell Johnson had a very good Test...Kulasekara in the Lankan side was replaced by Dhammika Prasad, which also helped one of us.
  • Taking his first HoF for the season with Johnson helping him out is illiniman14, while BxBarracuda takes home his first spoon for the season.

The India-Australia fixtures have been announced and the dates match exactly with a couple of other series, so we will close this season as planned at end of March (18 rounds in all)...plenty of rounds with double-header Tests now, so lots of movement can still be expected over the next few rounds...

The next round is a double-header and starts January 2 with a new series, so please do remember to lodge your tips in time.

Wishing you all a very happy, peaceful and healthy New Year and looking forward to lots and lots of exciting and friendly competition in 2013...

  • There was plenty of drama on the field all right in the first round of the New Year. New Zealand embarrassed themselves and lost the Test in less than 100 minutes on the first day. Sri Lanka put up some fight but couldn't stop Mike Hussey from bowing out of international cricket with a final win for his team.
  • There was as much drama here in our ranks. illiniman14 picked Taylor (??) in his squad. I presume he meant Ross Taylor, who wasn't even in the squad. Instead of a zero, I allowed the least score in the Kiwis side for him (which unfortunately was 1 by Guptill frown )
  • Then, ozzz2002 managed to pick Nuwan Kulasekara in his side. Kulasekara was in the squad, he hadn't played the second Test, so did not have a direct replacement, meaning ozzz get a zero for this player.
  • Sypher and Doomed both failed to lodge teams for the South Africa Test. Both were scored the default score of 209, which was the wooden spoon score for that Test (by wwe84). Sypher got in time for the Australia Test and lodged an exact side as doomed's default side from the previous round, which meant both finished the round with a very decent score at the end...
  • But taking the cake this round is N-Bomb....He managed to have both Sangakkara and Shane Watson in his side....both were out, but at least Sanga had a direct replacement in the 3rd Test (Thirimanne)...N-Bomb probaby shot himself in the foot by picking Shane Watson as his trump (and he posted his team AFTER I edited the squads frown )....Watson had no direct replacement in the team, meaning n-bomb allowed paper_aero to slip back into the driver's seat at the end of the round.

The next round is again a real big one, covering 10 ODIs in all...unfortunately, India and Australia named their teams for only the first half of the matches, while we pick our teams here for the entire round (no replacements scoring this round)...so try and pick your teams carefully and please do so BEFORE end of January 10.

Costly mistake, I think I took Sangakkara as well :-/. And that was after correcting everyone's NZ mistakes! *Sigh*. World cricket is one of the few comps where focus and attention to detail is crucial!

  • Massive round that! 10 ODI matches spread over 16 days, 4 countries and almost 60 players in action...can't get any bigger than that!
  • Australia scraped through to tie their series against Sri Lanka at 2-2 and Sri Lanka will rightly feel they were robbed of a win in the fourth ODI...Australia used 17 players in this series and are still nowhere close to finding their best ODI combination after the exit of Michael Hussey and the injury to Shane Watson frown and a weird "rotation policy"!
  • India won their series against England 3-2 and climbed back to number 1 spot in the ODI table (on decimal point difference)
  • Over here, srini701 picked his first HoF and with a poor round from Sypher, climbed up one spot. gtho4 picked his first spoon as well, but stayed put in his place.
  • There was no change in the top 4 places with paper_aero extending his lead over N-Bomb to over 150 points, but there was plenty of movement at the bottom of the table. Ozzz2002 climbed off the bottom with a very good round, wwe84 moved up as well, with doomed defaulting this round. doomed drops to the cellar for the first time this season.
  • We welcome a new player Daaanieeel this round...He had an excellent round there and takes position in the middle rungs...will he lodge tips for the next rounds and stay the course or is he another of those just dropping by???? We'll know by the next round smile

The next round sees another fresh series and a new team, Pakistan for the first time this season. This will make it all the top 8 teams in the world in action in this season's World Cricket comp, except for West Indies smile

  • "Life's not fair!" I picked Dale Steyn as my trump, not once, but twice in this comp this season and that chap didn't do me any favours! paper_aero picks him as his trump this round and look what Steyn has done! He blew the Pakistanis away with a stunning display of fast bowling and won for paper more points as a trump than the entire score of some of us others here frown
  • "Size also does not always matter!" srini701, Howie72 and wwe84 learnt this the hard way this round...they picked the seven foot-tall Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Irfan and Pakistan instead played a replacement fast bowler in the Test! Serves The Pakistanis right for ignoring a "giant" of a bowler smile
  • paper_aero skips away to the biggest lead of the season with his 3rd HoF performance of the season, while wwe84 lands his 2nd spoon for the season
  • what gives srini701 in 6th place hope still in this season's comp? There are some more multi-team rounds left and who knows what may happen? paper_aero may yet pick a trump who will pull out on day 1 of a Test match this season and srini's trumps may yet score double centuries or take 10 wickets in the same Test grin wink

  • South Africa completed their fifth win in a row and won their sixth consecutive series despite a tough fight from a few Pakistanis....The DRS review thing was fun to watch in this Test...Kallis was given out caught, poor chap reviewed it...3rd umpire said he was not out caught, but out LBW! No cricket rule says you can actually change the manner in which the batsman was given out...if the review was for caught and the batsman did not touch the ball, he should have been asked to continue his innings, not given out in another way!!!! BCCI and team India will suddenly feel justified in continuing to oppose the DRS smile smile {http://www.espncricinfo.com/page2/content/story/605345.html}
  • But quite a few of us had Kallis as our trump here and so we can all feel let down this round by a poor decision frown
  • Not so paper_aero, who skips away to a humongous lead over the next-best (n-bomb) and probably can afford to default a round and still retain his lead at the top
  • BxBarracuda and Howie72 also cross the 10k points for the season and at least 2 or 3 more will join them there next round...can all of us cross the 10k mark for the season?
  • wwe84 goes from spoon to hero in 2 rounds, while ozzz2002 gets his second spoon for the season despite having a decent side!

The next round sees the start of the India-Australia series...so please try and lodge your tips for that Test before the match starts on February 22

For future weeks can we have changes to the lineup edited into the first post? How could I possibly know to look through the picks in order to maybe find an update on the lineups?

Those of us who picked Ojha get a zero (he was not injured..just not picked that's all)...those of us who picked Kallis, his replacement player (some Abbott) will score for them, since this was a case of an injury ruling a player who would otherwise have played, out of the team...

I am letting Dhoni be a trump for illiniman since I should have updated the first post and let people know of the Australian team when it was known well before the start (in a way, my fault frown ). There are no replacements in such case, so illiniman will only score for 4 players...I didn't want to penalise him for something not his fault...would have done the same for wwe84 too smile
