It is hard to believe that it has been three years since I was actually walking along the banks of the Yarra river admiring the facilities for the Australian Open. Now, in the snowy Canadian winter, I will have to resort to cable to bring me the views of the first major tennis event of the year.

For the players, we had Novak Djokovic beat out Rafa Nadal in a very epic final that had momentum swinging in both players' directions. We had Victoria Azarenka beat Maria Sharapova completely and utterly on the plexicushion surface. This year, Roger Federer comes in at #2 and Andy Murray at #3 ahead of Nadal, while Djokovic is still at #1. On the women's side of things, the two finalists from last year are 1-2, while Serena Williams and Agnieszka Radwanska round out the top four.

For all of us, this will be the second competition of the 2013 tipping season, having just had the Super Bowl usurp that title from the hands of this competition (it starts tomorrow, get your tips in now!). Last year had paper_aero and illiniman14 win, but with the unpredictable nature of the tennis world, they may not be able to defend their titles. That is, if you tip against them...

I walked past the Tennis Centre a couple of days ago! A tip- look for players that can handle hot weather. The warm-up tourney in Sydney is on at the moment, and the players are on court in temperatures of 41C (106F), and that is just the air temperature! Forecast is for hot weather for quite a time to come, and over most of Australia.

Oh, count me in, please. smile

Chogobad,

You have to pick the 8 semi-finalists, 4 quarter-finalists, 2 semi-finalists, and the final. Points are awarded relative to the player's seeding. It will become a lot clearer when LDV posts the tipping thread.

There are two comps, women's and men's, and they run independently of each other.

All before the start of the second round, actually, which gives you nearly a week to get your tips in.

If it is regarding the 49ers loss, it happens. If it was a family member, sorry for that loss.

Five yards away from victory. Three chances... I'd fire that offensive coordinator as soon as possible.

  • Congratulations to BxBarracuda for winning the 2013 Ladies Australian Open tennis competition!
  • Second place goes to srini701 while thirs place goes to illiniman14.
  • What do our three medalists have in common? All of them chose Sloane Stephens to get to the quarterfinals for big points.
  • What did BxBarracuda do differently? He also had the cheek to pick Svetlana Kuznetsova to reach the quarters for even bigger points.
  • wwe84 gets fourth place, but he did pick 10/15 for the most amount of correct picks.
  • In the cellar we have N-Bomb who picked a respectable 6/15, but for only 21 points.
  • More big points could have been scored had we picked Stephens to get to the semifinals, and for picking Makarova to get to the quarters.
  • The tiebreaker was used twice, separating Howie72 from ozzz2002, and also chogobad from Dizart, both debutants.
  • Congratulations to all the players for participating in the competition!

I had never heard of Sloane Stephens before the tournament, but her game against Williams was very impressive. A star in the making, I reckon.

Congrats to BxB for running away with our comp, and to Srini and Illiniman, too. Nice write-up, too, LDV!

A tipper has petitioned the scoring judge for a review, stay tuned to see if the outcome changes.

While she made some big mental errors in the game with Serena, Sloane Stephens showed a lot of tenacity to battle back in later games and the match in general.

Sorry to be bursting in like this, but I am pretty sure I had Svetlana Kuznetsova in my side too...think I should be the one winning this smile

Edited to add: Read Bx's post later...think he meant the same as I did...sorry and thanks, Bx...
