Here's my belated contribution to the 'birds' collection earlier in the month. This is a fledgling Black Noddy on the nest with a parent nearby. These birds nest in their thousands on the Pisonia trees on Heron Island, southern Great Barrier Reef.

p.s. that tree name is correct (Pisonia grandis is part of the Bougainvillea family)

I took this towards the end of summer. The thing with it is that for two years we had so little rain it was completely dry, and this year over the course of just three months we had so much rain it had to have danger deep water signs erected.

Are you ready for some views from 'The Mountain Walk' to the Iron Age hillfort of Twmbarlwm in Wales. I am not sure which towns etc we are looking at but that will have to be the Bristol Channel in the background.

I'm pretty sure that's Newport, Monmouthshire. It's the third largest city in Wales and has various suburbs creeping out along the valleys. I've got a feeling that the middle of your picture shows the River Usk but I'll happily defer to a Welsh person because what do I know of darkest Wales? (Not much is the answer to that question, lol.)

My contribution to the recent wonderful sunset shots...
Taken while snorkeling in the harbor on Heron Island - that's my excuse for the non-horizontal horizon! The old ship in mid-ground was scuttled to form a breakwater.

Can I recommend Picasa3, the freebie program, there is a straighten feature which I use before uploading to Photobucket.

Actually in this particular case (and heaven knows I usually scream at my laptop when I see water that isn't level) I think it's a better picture left as it is. I just straightened it in Photoshop and it looks just like any other picture taken across water, maybe from a boat, bit of a swell, sunset, old ship... nice pic but not incredible. Sorry Mike.

But as it is now, water tilted alarmingly, and knowing that it was taken by someone snorkeling, it's an action photo. I still want to scream at my laptop but this time I'm screaming "Whoa Mike, that's amazing! Oh heavens I feel seasick!" - whole different effect.

Now, where are my Kwells? wink

These are pretty much like where I lived with my parent/s from 1965-93, otherwise it was a bungalow version first and since 1995 where I am now, and a brick version from 1994-5. They weren't deliberate particularly but ended up being the best places available each time we needed to move.

This time we could be looking towards Brecon Beacons from 'The Mountain Walk' to the Iron Age hillfort of Twmbarlwm in Wales.

OK, I won't touch it! Thanks for all the great feedback and I'm really sorry for the induced discomfort, flopsymopsy. I do know what you mean about non-level horizons.

Thanks Chavs. They're like little aliens those fish, you go near them and they come up, mouths open going feed me, feed me.

If you're ever in a Japanese park, stand by the side of the lake (there's bound to be one) and whistle. Dozens, sometimes hundreds, of koi will rush at you. Better still, buy some fish food (they sell it in the parks), put some in your hand and the fish will take the food from you. Having your finger sucked by a very large koi is decidedly weird!

That definitely sounds kind of creepy, flopsymopsy, but then again, I have a thorough dislike for fish mouths anyhow, they always seem to be so ugly!

This is the end of London, and probably the closest it comes in Finchley. If you travel in the right direction you can keep going to the London border and stay in fields.

Love the daffodils Sue, I think a vase of spring flowers just cheers you up, especially if the weather is still very wintery.

Flopsy, having your fingers sucked by Koi sounds very weird indeed.

It is official, we have some snow. OK, it is only about an inch but all schools closes, airport not operational at the moment so no national newspapers or mail plane, vehicles abandoned all over the place and police advising people to have a duvet day! smile
