Nascar
2013

These are the details for this year's comp:
  • There are 36 races; the first race is the Daytona 500 on February 24th. The last race is at Homestead on November 17th.
  • We pick names for our teams in this competition and the team names can be up to 17 characters, including spaces.
  • We will be picking 4 drivers this year for each race and all 4 of those drivers will be starters.
  • Slip-streaming rule will be more like it was in the past, which is you can't have the same line-up as any tippers within 5 places behind you in the competition.
  • Point Scoring - we receive points for the first 3 of the 4 drivers from our starting lineup to cross the finish line (aka our 4th placed driver is ignored) i.e. we score points for 3 drivers, but we have a "reserve" or 4th driver in our starting lineup.
  • The points we receive are the exact same points awarded by NASCAR for a race.
  • Default will be the 4 drivers from your team that were in your lineup in the previous week.
  • Deadline: Will always be midnight Friday FT time. There's a grace period of 3 or 4 hours, but please don't push your luck past that! Late starters can join by posting their team before midnight on any Friday, and they're in for the next race + all subsequent races. They come in at the rear of the field, on equal points with last.
Drivers & Transfer Windows:
  • No transfer windows this season, so you can change you will have the opportunity to change your line-ups each week.

  • The first 2 Chase drivers anyone picks have no penalties, if you pick a third Chase driver then it is minus 5 from you total score, pick a 4th Chase driver and it's minus 10 more from your total score.

    Last year's standings:

    Position Points Back

    1 Brad Keselowski 0
    2 Clint Bowyer 39
    3 Jimmie Johnson 40
    4 Kasey Kahne 55
    5 Greg Biffle 68
    6 Denny Hamlin 71
    7 Matt Kenseth 76
    8 Kevin Harvick 79
    9 Tony Stewart 89
    10 Jeff Gordon 97
    11 Martin Truex Jr. 101
    12 Dale Earnhardt Jr. 155

  • If you have the same team as someone else: if you take the plunge and change a driver, any team within 5 spots in front of you cannot change their team to match yours. If they do, it's an invalid choice, and they keep their original team.
  • If your team is different: the blocking rule applies even if your team is different from a team below you, e.g. if you change your team and it now matches someone who's within 5 spots below you, it's an invalid choice.

EXAMPLES: whoever's running second last can change their team to whatever they want, as long as it doesn't match the tailender's. Whoever's running first cannot change their team to match anyone in spots 2 through 6.
N.B. this new rule will not operate in reverse. e.g. a player can change his team to match a player in front of him or her (don’t know why you would, but you can!)

Tie-breaker:
  • in the unlikely event that two or more tipsters finish on equal points at the end of the comp, weekly wins/wooden spoons will be used as a tie breaker e.g. there's a triple dead-heat for 1st place -- player A has 14 weekly wins and 8 wooden spoons (+6) -- player B has 7 weekly wins and no spoons (+7) -- player C has 11 weekly wins and 4 wooden spoons (+7). The podium positions are C-B-A on a count back.
Final Note:
  • While we are picking drivers for our teams, we are actually picking the car number the drivers are driving. If a driver is suspended for the race or has to leave the race before it's finished for whatever reason and someone else gets in their car to race it, anyone who picked the original driver of the car gets full points for where that car number finished. Last season Kyle Busch was suspended for a race Mike McDowell drove Kyle's #18 car for the race, people who has picked Kyle received the points which McDowell scored while in the #18 car.
Srini701 is the defending titleholder; he won last year's comp. This year's comp is the 9th running of a Nascar comp; Sypher is the only player to have won this twice (and no-one has retained their title). Previous winners:

xDanica Patrick made her first real wave in NASCAR by taking the pole for this prestigious race. Carl Edwards went through 4 cars in the last month trying to figure out the Daytona track.

The wheels came off early on lap 32, of 200, as tight single file lines combined with 1 car in the line slowing a bit and one car not noticing and running into the back of the car in front of him. In this case Matt Kenseth, who was running 2nd, fell back just a bit and Kyle Busch a few cars behind him didn't make the quick speed adjustment, bumping Kasey Kahne sending him into the wall into Juan Pablo Montoya, and causing a chain reaction that had Kevin Harvick taking out some cars, including Tony Stewart. The cars listed all went back to the garage and while they made it back on the track were non factors in the race. There was not a lot of passing in the race, the drafting used in the previous year’s isn't there anymore and only on rare occasions did the lower part of the track have a pack of cars strong enough to battle much less pass the lead cars running the top side. Danica Patrick ran a solid race, running top 5 most of the day and finishing top 10, but she never seemed to have what it took to take control of the race. She never made a move late in the race from 3rd place to challenge the leaders and she never seemed to have the type of restarts she would need to make moves off the restarts. Those things that she would need to win a race shouldn't take away from running a great race on the biggest stage. Jeff Gordon led the first 31 laps, Matt Kenseth the most with 86 laps and Denny Hamlin led many of his 33 laps down the stretch. Lap 137 has things go bad again as Trevor Bayne wrecked and collect Carl Edwards with him, and David Ragan, and David Gilliland and Terry Labonte. This one much like the last was accordion style, as up front they slowed down and everyone gets into each other, eventually someone wrecking and collecting. Brad Keselowski was in front of Bayne and he ended up getting bumped to the bottom without wrecking, Keselowski also had some minor damage in the Lap 32 wreck. On lap 148 something went wrong in Matt Kenseth's car and he fell back after leading those 86 laps. The Toyotas, especially the Joe Gibbs ones, were dominating the race at this point and his team mates Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch now became 1 & 2. A couple of laps later Kyle Busch was smoking from the back end and comes off the track. A great day for Joe Gibbs turned to mud in a short time with car issues. At the end of the day it was Jimmie Johnson taking the checkered flag just edging Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Mark Martin who made a great final push, but couldn’t get past Johnson. Greg Biffle who started the last lap in 2nd fell back down the stretch, pushing Danica Patrick back with him from top 3 to top 10.

Sypher was the big winner this week and took the HoF, while George95's drivers didn't have much luck and he took the spoon.

3 of the 8 tippers chose to take the 5 point penalty for taking 3 Chase drivers from last year and it paid off, as 2 of them finished 1-2 and the other a respectable 5th.

Next race is next Sunday at Phoenix.

xKen Shrader was in the #32 Ford this week, driven by Terry LaBonte last week, so that is who scored for ozzz this week.

What you didn't want this week were tire issues, which ruined a lot of drivers days including Ryan Newman’s and Danica Patrick’s days. Kyle Busch spun out early in the race while trying to track down Carl Edwards and never fully recovered. Pit strategies and pit times were key last year and are even more so this year with the less on track passing that we are seeing in these gen 6 cars. Carl Edwards led the last 100+ laps for his first victory in more than a year. Jimmie Johnson has finished 1 and 2 now and his battle for positioning with Brad Keseloswksi down the stretch was hard fought, while Denny Hamlin took to the apron on the last lap to pull a move to cut off Keselowski and pass Johnson for 2nd, but he couldn't hold off Johnson long enough and finished 3rd. Johnson, Keselowksi and Earnhardt Jr. have finished in the top 5 both races so far.

BxBarracuda took the HoF with 124 and ozz the spoon with 75.

Srini edged Sypher by 1 point this week, putting them in a tie for first 10 points ahead of the #3 tipper.

Next race is next Sunday at Las Vegas.

I'm thinking of adding a rule change next year.

Let me know your opinions on this.

For next year tippers wouldn't be able to have the same driver 3 weeks in a row.

Sounds fair. Will we have to change ALL drivers, or just one or two?

Fair enough..that way we'll have to come back every once a while and change a driver or two...will keep it interesting smile

Same driver, so all four would need to be changed? What if I really like, say, two out of my four?

Ozzz, at first I was thinking all 4, but even before I saw Leo's post I was considering the thought of having it be 2 of the drivers instead of all, and at least one of the drivers would have to be a Chase driver.

Howie, you could declare at the begining of the season that every 3rd week to alternate the same 2 drivers for 2 of yours then put original 2 back the next week. That would allow you to not have to post a new lineup for the rest of the season lol.

One problem I have with this is that Chase thingy...especially since we have to keep track of who the Chase drivers from the previous year were, every time time we change drivers...

Maybe if you keep listing the chase drivers, it would help...or maybe change it such a way that we can pick from the current standings, no matter what their position was in the chase the previous year...

I'd be interested in if you weren't able to maintain the same lineup for more than 3 or 4 consecutive weeks.

I think, just like how NASCAR does with cup qualifying, is after five races, we readjust to this season's top 12 in points when determining our lineups. However, with this, when you pick a driver who is 13th in points, as a non-Chase driver, and he races into the Top 12, than an adjustment has to be made. If you keep the same lineup for the next race, the -5 point deductment will apply.

I agree with George...this is something I would have suggested too if I spent a little more time thinking of this comp (or if I had a brain smile )

xDenny Hamlin made honest comments after last week’s race at Phoenix which said that Generation 5 cars were better than the new Generation 6 cars. NASCAR found these to be "disparaging" comments and fined him 25k. Hamlin doesn't see it that way and won't pay the fine, saying he would rather be suspended, which is possible if he doesn't pay the fine, then pay the fine. He is currently appealing his fine. Hamlin is not alone in these thoughts, but to the same point there was a lot of issues with the Generation 5 cars when they first came out and teams hadn't figured them out completely yet.

Clint Bowyer started 2nd but before lap 10 was falling behind in a loose car, and a pit stop put him 2 laps down by lap 20. Tony Stewart had moved back 15 spots by lap 20. On the plus side, Montoya and McMurray had to start from the back, but moved up to the middle of the pack by lap 20 and Kyle Busch willed his way to 4th after starting just outside the top 10. Lap 40 started green flag stops and Joe Gibbs Racing was snake bit again as the best car on the track up to that point, Kyle Busch's, was too fast entering pit lane and he went from 3rd to 18th. Lap 66 had the first caution of the day for debris on the track. Lap 105 was the green flag stops for the caution wave arounds and lap 115 was time of pit stops for everyone else. Kyle Busch doesn't seem to have trouble passing drivers in the new cars, as he drove himself up to 10th. Denny Hamlin, another Gibbs car, was too fast entering pit lane, and he was he went from 6th to 17th and 1 lap down. Up to this point Johnson and Keselowski were in the top 5 all day and mostly in the top 3, Earnhardt Jr. has been just outside that top 5, while Danica Patrick hadn't gotten going at all yet and was multiple laps behind. Lap 160 has Marcos Ambrose losing a bit of control which NASCAR thought was enough to bring out a caution even though there was no danger as he saved the car and brought it back under control. At this point it was Kasey Kahne's race to win. A tire changing hiccup cost Keselowski 10 spots during the caution pit stop. On the restart Kasey Kahne in 2nd doesn't get a good jump, which gives Kyle Busch a chance to dive low get around him and take the lead. Bobby Labonte brings out a caution for a spin on lap 196. Kasey Kahne held the lead he took not that long ago from Kyle Busch for the restart, while Denny Hamlin didn't pit and will be the race leader. Travis Kvapil started spewing smoke on lap 233 bringing out the next caution and covering Danica's car with oil. Matt Kenseth and Brad Keselowski took no tires and restarted 1-2. Kasey Kahne and Kyle Busch didn't have great pit stops and restarted 6-7. Lap 235 has Ryan Newman's engine going kaput for the second week in a row. It was Happy 41st Birthday Matt Kenseth as he won the race.

The HoF honors go to George95 this week with 127 and ozzz took the spoon with an 84.

Srini takes solo control of 1st place, giving it his all to defend his crown. Gtho pulled into podium position as Bx didn’t make triple digits this week.

Next race is next Sunday at Bristol.

This makes it hard for gtho4 to pick a team, as there are a limited amount of Fords he can choose from.

x Terry Labonte was back in the #32 car this week for ozzz and Brian Vickers made his first appearance in the #55 for Mark Martin this week.

Pairing up for a little push was the early way to get ahead in the race, while dive bombing the bottom of the track worked better later on. Early in the race Jeff Burton lost speed and Carl Edwards got sandwiched between him and Marcos Ambose, with Edwards coming out of it with the least damage. Jamie McMurray was in the wall on lap 70 when he was running in 3rd. When David Gilliland brought out the 4th caution on lap 154 Kasey Kahne, Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch were the strongest drivers. Jeff Gordon was driving aggressively even passing Kyle Busch who is usually the one doing the passing but after he only took 2 tires on Busch was sliding back in the pack. Kurt Busch was having his best day this year but had to green flag stop on lap 223 when a tire went down on him. Aric Almirola was in the top 10 in season points but a wreck took him out of that spot and by lap 257 Matt Kenseth had the lead. Jeff Gordon grabbed the lead on lap 321 when Dave Blaney brought out a caution. Joey Logano put all his energy into trying to pass Jeff Gordon that when Denny Hamlin came up behind him he was sliding in front of Hamlin at slower speeds on the turns and after a small bump Logano recovered from, Hamlin didn’t slow up as much on the next turn giving Logano a bigger bump spinning him out into the wall and his day was effectively done. Lap 381 had disaster as leader Jeff Gordon blew a tire slid up the track and onto 2nd place driver Matt Kenseth’s hood and they were both out of the race. Kasey Kahne had the lead and was battling Brad Keselowski furiously and holding him off. Jimmie Johnson’s top 5 day was over when he blew a tire with 48 laps to go. Kahne took a bigger advantage after this caution as Keselowski spun his tires on the restart and the bottom line fell a few cars back each. Kurt Busch was back to the top 5, quietly making a comeback from the last couple of year’s disasters. Kahne was out front with the battle being Kyle Busch and Brad Keselowski for 2nd, with Busch holding him off. Denny Hamlin had handling issues and spent the last 10 laps bouncing off of the walls of every curve because his car wouldn’t turn. Kasey got himself a big win, Kyle held off Brad for 2nd, Kurt and Clint had their best finishes with 4th and 5th, Dale continued his solid run with 6th place, Ryan bounced back with 7th, Brian made the most of his start and came in 8th, Paul continued a solid season with 9th and Jamie did well too rounding out the top 10.

Your Post-race fireworks came courtesy of Joey Logano going up to Hamlin’s car and trying to get his head in the window of Denny’s car but he was forcibly moved out of the way by Hamlin’s crew members.

The HoF honors again go to George95 this week with 119 and ozzz takes his third spoon in four week with a 68.

Next race is next Sunday at Auto Club Speedway.

x Timmy Hill will make his first appearance in the #32 for ozzz this week. Mark Martin is back in the #55 this week for George.

Greg Biffle and Brad Keselowski's teams found data stream issues after practice and because they had to correct it had to start from the back of the field. Joe Gibbs Racing was showing off early with their 3 drivers running 1-2-3, with Matt Kenseth in the lead, followed by Denny Hamlin and then Kyle Busch. Early on Denny Hamlin & Joey Logano played nice with each other running in the top 5. Timmy Hill started spilling oil on the track on lap 32, of 200, and leader Kyle Busch and Clint Bowyer couldn't avoid driving through it, which left them dealing with that. Lap 68 started the green flag stops, with Dale Earnhardt Jr. being the first on pit row and Tony Stewart last on lap 75. Driver’s splitters were chipping and cracking as they bounced off the surface. Lap 103 had Matt Kenseth with a flat and Lap 106 was Joe Nemecheck with a flat tire. Dale Jr. had a bad pit stop on the Nemecheck caution and went from 3rd to 18th. With 15 laps to go Clint Bowyer had engine trouble. Now let’s move to the final restart which had Joey Logano leading the 2nd line and blocking Tony Stewart up and down the track. Stewart then went from 4th to 20th in 2 laps. Kevin Harvick also slipped from the top 5 to closer to 20th. On the last lap it was Joey Logano in the lead with Denny Hamlin coming strong, turn 1 Logano holding on they are scraping paint, turn 2 Hamlin pressuring to be even more paint scraping, turn 3 has Hamlin a nose ahead while in the turn, at which point Joey Logano goes up the track after Hamlin left him room and wrecks Hamlin and sends himself into the top wall, while Denny Hamlin had a bad head on crash with an infield barrier. While they were wrecking Kyle Busch slid right past for the win. Denny Hamlin had to be taken in an ambulance off the track then airlifted to a hospital as he was having trouble breathing which turned out to be a compact fracture in his back. Tony Stewart followed Logano onto pit road, cut him off after he was stopped and got in his face and threw a punch, which led to Logano's team holding Tony back, letting young Joey throw a water bottle at Tony. Tony has had choice words for Joey Logano, for his attitude while driving and on social media. After the race the comments were expletive ridden and intense even after he calmed down later. It didn’t help Logano that while Hamlin was being taken away in the ambulance he commented on air in reference to the wreck with Hamlin following last week’s issues “so that’s what he gets”. Hamlin is OK but his status for the next race is unknown and no disciplinary action is being taken by NASCAR against any drivers for this week’s occurrences.

The HoF went to Sypher with a 117 Busch and Dale Jr. finished 1-2 for him, Ozz is still being weighed down by whoever is in the #32 and Danica Patrick who is improving this year, but still not racing for the wins yet, usually sitting a lap or behind, learning and keeping her car out of the garage.

All the top 6 changed positions this week, positions 1 and 2 flip flopped, as did 3 and 4, while 5 and 6 also switched spots with each other.

Next race is next in two Sunday's in Martinsville.

x Ken Schrader was in the 32, Mark Martin was in Denny Hamlin's 11 and Brian Vickers was in Mark Martins 55.

Martinsville is a bruising short track which leaves cars with a lot of cosmetic damage. Ryan Newman drew a 3 lap penalty for stopping on the track for a flat tire rather than going to pit row, forcing a caution to come out. Martin Truex Jr. can't find the technique that led him into the Chase last year and continues to struggle this year, coming in 40th. Tony Stewart faded late for the 2nd race in a row. Kurt Busch who has been fighting mightily to get into race winning form, possibly make the Chase and rebuild his tarnished image took a hit as flames poured out of his hood with 43 laps to go. Everyone was impressed with Danica's 1st go at Martinsville as she grinded her way to a 12th place finish with a late surge. Jimmie Johnson got the win leading 356 of the 500 laps, Clint Bowyer got a much needed 2nd place finish and Jeff Gordon a needed 3rd place finish.

Brian Vickers drew the ire of Kevin Harvick at the end of the race, and Vickers may know now not to pick on girls. Martinsville is a notoriously rough track with a lot of bumping and metal bending, but Vickers ended up bumping Danica Patrick from behind twice a little rougher than he should have been. The first time around ended with Dale Earnhardt spinning out and the 2nd time is what drew Harrick’s ire, and he spun Vickers out just past the finish line and blocked him onto the road to the garage on the way back, making it clear he was displeased with Vickers in some way. It hasn't been directly said that defending Danica caused Harvick to mix it up with Vickers, but that is the impression many are taking from the incidents.

The HoF went to George95 for the 3rd time in 6 races this year while ozzz2002 took his 5th spoon in that time span.

5 of us had the KJ combo, Kyle Busch & Jimmie Johnson and 3 of them, in this case the seasons top 3 so far, added Brad Keselowski to the KJ combo.

Next race is Saturday in Texas.

x Mark Martin was back in the #55 and Brian Vickers was in Hamlin's #11, while Timmy Hill was back in the #32. The Busch Brothers started 1-2 this week, with Kyle taking the pole. The Penske Fords of Brad Keselowski & Joey Logano had their rear end housings of their cars confiscated by NASCAR on race day and they barely had time to complete inspection before the race started. There are still possible penalties to come for the car set ups.

Kyle Busch & Martin Truex Jr. dominated this race and whoever restarted in the lead usually took the bottom position and ran away from the field clean, rarely being run down. Certain teams and their engines had trouble with the change from daylight to night. Jeff Gordon was jockeying in the top 3 most of the night but late in the race mechanical troubles ended his night badly. The race completely changed on a late caution which occurred during green flag pit stops and race leaders Kyle Busch & Martin Truex Jr. were in the pits when the caution came out. Carl Edwards, Joey Logano and Greg Biffle had been in the back of the lead lap group all race and jumped up the top 5. Brad Keselowski was a lap behind but got the lucky dog on a late caution and turned a 20th or worse finish into a top 10. On the last restart Kyle Busch’s team was outstanding and got him to the line first and once they restarted no one could catch Busch and he cruised to a win.

The HoF is shared by srini & LDV this week with 127 and ozzz took some more lumber with an 88.

Next race is Sunday at Kansas.

x Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano barely made it on the track as their cars were going through some added inspections regarding parts in their rear ends housings. They were docked 25 driver points, their crew chiefs and other members suspended for 6 races and crew chiefs fined 100,000 dollars. They have appealed and those appeals will be heard May 1st. Earlier this year Jimmie Johnson’s team won an appeal after penalties and suspensions were levied on them.

Kyle Busch was in control for the early portion of the race with Martin Truex Jr. holding 2nd during that time frame. Bobby Labonte was without a backup driver, as his alternate was driving a different car, so he was forced to drive with a virus until a possible backup was out of the race, which did eventually happen. Ricky Stenhouse has spin out issues and Carl Edwards had early motor issues, while a spark from Matt Kenseths car caused a small fire in his pit box as he left. The day was caution filled on the windy track. Kyle Busch was snake bit by Kansas again and not even he knows why, saying himself that he spun twice on his own in corners, the second time resulting in a crash that took him and Joey Logano out of the race. Kyle’s JGR team mate Matt Kenseth won the race, Jimmie Johnson was top 5 again, and Kasey Kahne, Clint Bowyer and Martin Truex Jr. were the other top 5 finishers.

George took his 4th HoF, giving him HoFs in half the races so far and moves him up to 4th place. Ozz pulled a wily veteran move to earn his 7th consecutive spoon this week, removing winner Matt Kenseth from his team and adding Joey Logano, who wrecked early and Marcos Ambrose to his team, ensuring he got the wood, even though he would have won it with his last week’s team, but only by 1 point.

Next race is Saturday at Richmond.
