3rd. We're on the medal stand at least. Still not good enough for my satisfaction. We're going back to work. Time to break out the hardhats and lunchpails!

Thanks to Wes for the stats, of course. 6.31 %-tile points down. Hmm. We can make it, but it's going to take some doing in those games we're currently 4th in.

LOL, my dear friend. You beat us. We're only #4. Meh. I did score four new peeps, though, and they have a lot of promise! Woot!!!!

Keep it together, Dave. And you can still call me any time (well, not at 3 a.m.)

I love you.

And we do have a "IV" Roman numeral (at least that's what it shows on our team info page). Like Dave, I'm not overly proud of that number, and I would like to see the "I" one more time. Alas, TVC no longer exists.

However, now that we're Running Amok, who knows where we'll end up. LOL

Wes, I seem to remember that the mixed game is excluded from your "Team of the Year" calculation. Is that still the case? There seems to be considerable interest in having a "Team of the Year" metric. I know from talking with others that most look forward to the monthly unveiling. Since we compete as teams, it would be nice to have all the team game data included in a monthly metric. For the most part every where I look, there are individual stats. Those individual stats are appreciated and useful. I think a team stat would be very useful. "If you ain't keeping score its just practice".

Morpheus, yes, that game is still excluded simply because I cannot track it. The metric is based on the http://www.funtrivia.com/tvt_lastmonth.cfm page which does not have the game. If Terry were to add it there, I would include it in the calculations from that point onward.

I'd like to know what others think about having an all encompassing team metric. Is this something that's a "don't care" or is it useful? Personally, I think of it as a missing mile post on the team journey. YOU ARE HERE...kinda thing.

I would definitely like Mixed added, but I also thnk there are a few other games ripe for inclusion in team scoring. Why the chosen ones and not the rest? Seems like the more games included, the better for the participation in terms of showing who is really dominating.

I'll back up my boss on this one, but I hate the metric system. We're bigger than Europe, and I understand inches, yards, pints, fifths, half-gallons, gallons, kegs, etc. I don't think "keg" is metric....

Bigger than Europe? What does that mean? In population and area, Europe is larger whether you measure in metric or Imperial. Or are you referring to FT members?

All those 5280 feet in a mile, 2240 pounds in a ton, 43560 sq feet to an acre, 16 ounces to a pound- numbers that are SO easy to calculate.

We have a tough time multiplying by 10... smile

Europe is over 10,000,000 square kilometres, whilst USA is only 9,800,000. Population of Europe is over 700 million versus USA with about half of that. Methinks it is about time that the Americans started to catch up! smile

Don't forget how much of the rest of the world is metric, too!

Seriously, the term metric as a noun refers to any standard system of measurement and comparison, so Wes's Team of the Year is a metric. It would be nice to include Mixed, when that is possible, because it is already part of the team competition, and is played regularly as teams attempt to be the best in it each day and month, but it has to be left out of the yearly calculations. And I have heard strong support for removing the New Question Game from the metric, since the sets are so variable in difficulty (not to mention correctness).

Actually, I don't see a problem with the NQG in terms of team standings. We are looking at 30 days and 7 to 15 players per team - 210 to 450 samples, with the scoring method (only top players for each team count) further making sure that extremely tough sets won't affect scoring.

While specific day's scores will fluctuate by luck, so will those for Heroes and Pot of Gold depending on the team's strength and weakness in certain topics. However, over the month and, much more, year, this does even out quite well. NQG is to a certain extent a "current affairs" quiz since questions often reflect top news of 6-8 weeks ago (as long as it takes until the question gets played).

I'm all for ADDING more games - the more games in the calculation (I would also add Obscure, Expert and Word Wiz), the better the standings reflect a team's actual overall strength in skill and activity. Removing games is something I would not be in favor of.

However as long as this is something that I have to calculate in Excel based off a copy-pasted web page, all I can use are the contents of that page and thus I can't increase the scope of the scoring.

I would hate to be a wet blanket on this idea, but how about games are thrown in that are considered true measures of trivia and not who has the greatest or quickest way to find an answer they don't know. Whatever happened to true sportsmanship? I know it is been brought up before, but this issue should be addressed. Level the playing field and allow those that play by the rules to show their skill by not finishing below those that state there are no "specific" rules against what they are doing.

If you're talking about Googling, it is allowed. It's not that there's a loophole, or that Terry hasn't got round to making a rule against it, it's the fact that Googling is allowed.

You are allowed to use any search methods you want - you can Google the questions for Piece of Cake if you want, but you're not going to get a very good score. If you feel like it, you can look up all the answers for Word Wizard in a dictionary.

In games like the Bus Ride and Obscurity, it's actually encouraged. Being able to search effectively is a skill - working out which questions you're going to be able to look up and which you aren't, managing to include all relevant information without writing too much and doing it all as quickly as possible isn't that simple.

Before this flares up yet another debate: The most obvious reason to allow googling is that we cannot police it. We could implement complex methods to track loss of window focus or other means, but they would (a) hit legitimate players by accident and (b) not prevent someone simply using a second computer or, even faster, a mobile device with voice control.

So we use time penalties and different game formats to ensure that someone who does need time to search is graded lower than someone who gets the answer from the top of the head. Some games use steeper penalties than others, compromising between accommodating legitimately slow play (not everyone is a speed demon) and research protection.

It isn't perfect, it's far from it. But it's the best we can get without locking all players into a room under surveillance. Over the last 4 years, we had several heated discussions with lots of constructive player input and ideas about this. We even experimented with different timings on the GC to try and improve it. The net result was that every change and every suggestion we tried made things more unfair.

And with that, please leave it. Further discussion of googling in this thread will be summarily deleted.

Although I do not necessarily aree with the rule, I appreciate Wes's candor and honesty on an issue that divides many players.

Personally, I'm not in favor of adding more games to the TOTY (Team of the Year) metric. I barely have time to fulfill my obligation of playing the games already on the menu. I just think it makes sense to have all the games, currently designated as team games, included in the monthly calculation. I think utilizing a subset of all the games is a reasonable way to encourage team participation and comradery without impinging on our individual freedom to choose which games we play.

Sincere appreciation, for providing an outstanding place to meet friendly people and indulge my trivia addiction.

Well said morpheus and I agree with you. A lot of people on teams (not just my team, all teams) do their very best to find time in often busy days to play the team scoring games. Adding more could almost start to make it a burden rather than fun, which is not the general idea at all.
