21st December 2012 and the End of the World

21st December 2012 and the End of the World - Tue Dec 18 2012 11:37 AM

Question - if the world is to end on Friday, in which time zone will it be? grin

Ought we to open our Christmas presents early do you think?

Re: 21st December 2012 and the End of the World - Tue Dec 18 2012 01:10 PM

I guess if it follows the time zones for ending, us on the later zones would have at least a few hours notice. Then I could start tearing into gifts. But if I get that new car, I wouldn't have much time to drive it very far laugh

Re: 21st December 2012 and the End of the World - Tue Dec 18 2012 01:34 PM

It would have to be midnight in the time zone the Mayas lived in (because that's the actual end point of the calendar), so the US would see it just after midnight and Europe a few hours before.

But then the prediction wasn't for the END of the world but for a major change, the beginning of some new era. I guess we could wake up on the 22nd enslaved by sentient Facebook profiles or something like that. (Of course you could all prevent that particular fate by deleting yours while you still have the time... smile )

Quite a big change perhaps.

I guess I'd better get my new car before Friday if I want to test drive it then. wink

Spend up big as there won't be any credit card bills to pay off wink We're having our work Christmas party on the 21st but being in Oz, we'll get to see most of the 22nd anyway. smile

If the Mayans and Dommsdayers (is that what there called?) are right about the end of the world, I will let them tell me about for the rest of my life. wink

I'd like to at least see a power outage because of all the hype. Since I have very poor luck nothing will happen.

Yep, I've told my twin brother he won't be getting a present, lol

I guess I won't even have a birthday in 2012 if that is the case. Mine is a mere nine days away too!

Dang it! And I just sent my sister her birthday gift today. I could have saved on shipping charges.

Re: 21st December 2012 and the End of the World - Wed Dec 19 2012 03:55 AM

This all reminds me of 31st December 1999 when all the computers were going to crash at midnight affecting major installations. I was at a party on New Year's Eve at a house where you would be able to see if France exploded at the dot of midnight, they are an hour ahead of us. smile There are nuclear installations on the French coast nearby so it could have been quite a firework display if they had gone bang!

Nothing happened and I didn't hear of anyone having problems at the change of the millenium.

If anything happens, and I seriously doubt an earth-shattering event will happen, then I won't live to se 30 (a month from Saturday).

I remember a few years ago, when the world was to end. The ladies came out onto the porch at a set time, waitecd a bit, then filtered in to eat as, clearly, everyone was still here. (If I recall correctly, someone even said "we're still here" before heading inside).

Re: 21st December 2012 and the End of the World - Wed Dec 19 2012 02:26 PM

Hmmm. The Mayan Calendar doesn't actually predict the "end of the world". It's simply as far as they calculated it before the Spaniards murdered most of them, so they didn't have a chance to make more. So don't open your presents early, that's bad luck (giggles).

I just found this online copied from a FaceBook entry. It seems we have a few more years to go wink

We'll all wake up on the 22nd and find a completely changed world. The Bankers have repaid every penny, all politicians are as honest as the day is long, nuisance phone calls selling you things never ever happen, every economy in the world is in the best possible shape and there really are aliens.

Re: 21st December 2012 and the End of the World - Wed Dec 19 2012 08:25 PM

I don't think the Mayan's were very good at predicting the end of civilizations. They didn't see theirs coming.

It is December 21st now in many places... As far as I can tell the world isn't ending yet.

I feel sorry for people who predict the end of the world on a certain date. If it doesn't happen they are ridiculed as idiots. If it does happen they don't get to gloat.

Re: 21st December 2012 and the End of the World - Thu Dec 20 2012 09:35 AM

I had gloat as a Crystal Ball word once! Have I mentioned that?

My sanitation schedule doen't address this event. Should I still put out my rubbish Friday morning?

Re: 21st December 2012 and the End of the World - Thu Dec 20 2012 11:31 AM

There is still time, the world won't end time zone by time zone, you will have to be patient and wait until we are in the correct time zone for the Mayans apparently. smile

Go on you Aussies, gloat, you are getting a longer time than the rest of us.

Well it's after lunch time here in Australia and nothing horrible has happened. I'm just staying inside away from the heat in Perth. At least they have downgraded the temp on Christmas day from 41C to 38C. Still enough to warrant a slippery slide in Mum's backyard for us all (yes, yes, slippery slides are not just for kids! smile )

Lones, I think you should be on Peruvian time. smile It is supposed to happen at 11:11pm, but not sure if that takes Daylight Savings into account.

We still have a few hours to go, so if you have any unfinished quizzes in the pipeline, I suggest that you get them into the queue VERY quickly!

Guess that'll be 10:11pm tomorrow night here (just under 23 hours away), since Peru is one hour ahead of me, and if you figure DST, which Peru doesn't observe, it'd be 9:11pm Dallas time.

So...4:11am 12/22/12 London, 3:11pm 12/22/12 Sydney.

After watching Ghost many times, it occurred to me that Patrick Swayze wore the same clothes over and over again once he was a ghost. Does that mean that whatever you're wearing when you go is what you wear when you're a ghost? Hmmmm.. well as I head off to work's Xmas party in about half an hour, if the world does end tonight at least I'll be in a posh frock with my hair done and my favourite jewels on. I hate my shoes though. They're so uncomfortable I'd hate to be stuck wearing them for eternity! wink

Winged being wearing a Fedora with a Press Pass stuck in the brim: So, Gabriel, have you got a few minutes to spare for some questions?
Gabriel: I'm not really in the mood right now.
Reporter: I understand your frustration but our readers would like to know why their relatives never arrived. Only you know the story. How about it, please?
Gabriel: Okay but this has to be brief. The Big Guy needs His report ASAP.
Reporter: What was your first sign things weren't going right?
Gabriel: Well, I planned a 'warm up toot' in the Antarctic but my lips got stuck to the frozen brass of the Final Trumpet.
Reporter: Like in "The Christmas Story"?
Gabriel: This has nothing to do with Sonny's Story.
Reporter: Sorry, please continue.
Gabriel: With my injured lips I couldn't hit the high notes like I'd have needed to so I went with a Pneumatic air horn attachment they sell at the Heavenly Goods Superstore.
Reporter: That should have made things all the more easy for you. What went wrong?
Gabriel: They've established air and noise quality levels as output from such devices and, had I blown the horn, I would have been breaking their laws. Not an example to be setting by a representative of the Almighty.
Reporter: What were your options then?
Gabriel: Well, I considered subcontracting the job.
Reporter: That would be a big bit of work for some lucky, may I say, Devil.
Gabriel: No not him. Heaven's got zoning laws against any of his work being accepted.
Reporter: Who then?
Gabriel: I phoned Grim Reaper, Inc. Asked if his crew of Death, Hades and the other Horsemen might be available and he said that the size of the job was way too big for them. They're only experienced in one at a time type deals. Hades mentioned that since pennies aren't made much anymore, there may not be enough for the ferryman to be paid, That's a Union job you know and they have to be paid the contracted rate.
Reporter: So, that's when you...
Gabriel: Yeah, I called the thing off and have scheduled a planning conference for next year to get a better handle on the thing.
Reporter: Thanks for your time and better get those lips tended too. They look sore.
