This year's edition of the FA Cup tipping comp runs for 7 months over 10 rounds from 12th November 2011 until 5th May 2012 (FA Cup Round 1 through to the Final). The Football Association has received entries from 763 teams for this season's FA Cup, comprising 671 non-league teams plus the 92 league teams. The league teams are the 44 teams in the FAPL and FLC, and the 48 teams in League One and League Two.- the qualifying rounds for the 671 non-league teams will be completed today and tomorrow.
- the 32 survivors from those qualifiers join the 48 teams in L1 and L2 in the First Round (equals 80 teams).
- the 20 survivors from the Second Round will join the FAPL and FLC teams in the Third Round (equals 64 teams).
- from there it's a straight knock-out through to the FA Cup Final.
Although there are 10 rounds in the tipping comp we only lodge picks on 8 occasions:- the First Round of 40 games will be split into two rounds of 16 games each by ignoring 8 games.
- the Second Round has 20 games .. 4 games are ignored.
- the Third Round of 32 games is be split into two rounds of 16 games each.
- that's 5 tipping rounds which, with the remaining 5 rounds of the FA Cup, gives us the 10 tipping rounds!
- we also have advance picks so that each round is worth 16 pts.

3rd Round : Saturday 7 January 2012
4th Round : Saturday 28 January 2012
5th Round : Saturday 18 February 2012
6th Round : Saturday 17 March 2012
7th Round : Saturday 14 April 2012
8th Round : Saturday 5 May 2012
The rules for the FA Cup tipping comp are simple (they're the same as last year):
points
default
upsets
perfect picks
other bonus pts
dead-heats | one point for each correct pick .. home win, draw, away win
in other words, it's always at 90 minutes.
if you forget to pick, the away teams are all yours (ineligible for bonus pts);
but if the wooden spoon score is higher, default is the wooden spoon;
default for the semi-finals, the final and advance picks is the wooden spoon score.
you score a bonus point if you pick a game solo .. or one of two players.
one bonus point for 11+/16;
14/16 or higher receives a further bonus point (plus a knighthood from Her Majesty).
no one picks win, whoever picks a draw;
no one picks draw, whoever picks the upset win;
if you pick all home teams (or all bar one), ineligible for bonus pts.
weekly wins vs. wooden spoon countback determine podium finishes;
if they're identical, bonus pts will be used. |

The first ever FA Cup tournament was held back in 1872. It is the oldest knock-out football tournament in the world (known as soccer to the rest of us) .. 16 years later the oldest league in the world was formed (everyone plays everyone else home and away), when The Football League was formed in 1888. The record number of entrants for the FA Cup was 656 set back way back in 1922 comp; it remained unbroken for 83 years, when 660 teams entered the 2005 comp. The record has been broken each year since .. the 763 teams in this year's comp is a new record.
The draw for each round of the entire comp is unseeded, and the balls are redrawn from the barrel for every round .. anyone can play anyone. The 671 non-league teams played through Preliminary Rounds x2 and Qualifying Rounds x4 for the 32 spots available in the First Round, alongside the 48 teams in League One and League Two. The 20 survivors from these 80 teams join the 44 FAPL and FLC teams in the Third Round, as follows:

Last year's tipping comp had 18 runners; all of us except one are back for another dose. We have four runners this year: Dizart, rxbigdawg, superhooppete and wwe84. Welcome aboard! The record number of entrants for the FA Cup tipping comp was 18 set in 2004 (equalled last year). We have broken that record with 21 runners this year.
The first round of the tipping comp produced two upsets (one was picked by no-one and one was a solo pick by triviapaul), and one game was picked by everyone. Three players picked 10/16 for a bonus point, and two of them our are early season leaders: N-Bomb and triviapaul. Results for Round 1b will be posted later today.

N-Bomb has shaken off triviapaul (he fell back to 7th place) and is now in the lead solo .. srini701 was a point behind in 3rd but is now 4 pts behind as this round's winners, PaulE and LeoDaVinci, push him aside.
Once again we had one game picked by no-one, but this time we had no game with a 100% strike rate.
There was a delay between the post for Round 1a and this post for Round 2b due to TV scheduling by The FA. The last game in Round 1a started at 1:30pm local time (11:30pm in Sydney) and finished just under two hours later. The last game for Round 2b started 15 minutes later at 2:15pm and finished just after 4:00 am downhere.
As stated by dg_dave in the previous post, the second reason for this split is the need to have 16 pts for each round of this tipping comp (see first post in this thread).
The draw for the Second Round has been announced. The tipping thread is here : FA Cup - 2nd Round - Sat 3 Dec. Some games have three team-names as we await the outcome of those replays over the next week or so.

Nice work gtho, this one weekend of games has to be the craziest for any copmetition all year, and the only time we will see most of these team names, now it's just the craziness of keeping up with winners of the replays lol.

N-Bomb collects his first wooden spoon for the season and falls back from 1st to 4th. The other spoon goes to ozzz2002, who's now bringing up the rear.
rxbigdawg and superhooppete are this round's winners with picks of 10/16. They also score a bonus point each for reaching double figures.
PaulE joins superhooppete to make it x2 Englishmen at the top of the pile .. that's one from the south of England and one from up north.
LeoDaVinci avoided the cross-fire and retains 3rd spot. He was the only player in the top half of the table to retain their spot from the previous round.
The two Manchester clubs have been drawn to play each other in the Third Round. Manch City and their squillions will have another opportunity to defeat their neighbours United, and their paltry millions : bbc.co.uk/facup

superhooppete is still our leader. His margin over PaulE is steady at 2 pts. The two leaders and the tail-ender were the only players who retained their position from last week! The rest of us (18 of 21) all moved up or down.
We've now reached the half-way point in the FA Cup tipping comp .. 5 rounds of picks done, 5 rounds to go. At the half-way mark last year Howie72 was leading, and finished off the podium .. the winner, KrivoyRog, was 12 pts behind Howie72 at the half-way mark and won it by a margin of 5 pts at the finish post. In other words, the fat lady hasn't started singing.

illiniman14 missed the first two games, which were brought forward to Friday night, but still scores a point for the Spurs game as a gimme (everybody picked Spurs to win). Threads are renamed where games are brought forward by more than 24 hours (e.g. see FLC Tue 31st Jan, where two games were b/f by three days to Sat 28th Jan).
Those of us who chose Manchester United to make the semis (14 players) or the quarters (16 players) have already lost an advance pick or two. We can thank senor Kenny Dalglish and Liverpool for that one .. paper_aero covered both bases as he chose *both* Liverpool and Manch Utd to make the quarters!

yep, that looks like an add error, but let me check it when I get home; as I don't have the printout with me. It'll be via mobile phone as we have no phone-lines and no internet .. the next door neighbour is rebuilding his house and his builders re-arranged the footpath, the gutter and then the road (when they were re-connecting the water and the sewer) .. the remodelling was a demolition job.

His 6 pts lead out front wasn't enough for Mr QPR .. he scores yet another weekly win and extends his lead to a very healthy 8 pts. PaulE retains 2nd spot 3pts in front of the mob. There are eight players in the peloton, separated by just 3 pts!
Apart from the two leaders and ozzz2002 at the rear of the field, no-one retained their spot from last week (aka the previous round). The exception was Sypher.
George95 collected his first wooden spoon, and tumbled 6 spots down to 16th .. trev1 was the biggest mover in the opoosite direction; he flew up the ladder form 13th to 5th.

KrivoyRog comes out of nowhere with 10/16 and flies up the standings from mid-table to 2nd place, just 6 pts behind Mr QPR, pushing PaulE back to 3rd spot .. trivipaul also flew up from mid-table tojoin PaulE in equal 3rd place. With just one round left, the 5 players runing 3rd to 7th are still separated by a mere 2 points!
The last round sees the final 16 pts of the tipping comp but, as 10 of those pts are advance picks, some of us are simply too far behind and running dead to fall onto the podium at the finish post:- 6 pts for normal picks (three picks x 2 pts each).
- 4 pts are advance picks - finalists x2 x2 pts ea - 13 players picked one finalist for 2 pts (no-one picked both finalists for the max 4 pts).
- 6 pts for pick the winner (advance pick) - just six players have a live pick for the winner .. which means three players will receive the max 6 pts and three will receive 3 pts for the losing finalist:

Apart from the leader and the four tail-enders, no-one retained their position from the semi-final round!
trev1 and illinman14 came out of nowhere to finish on the podium behind superhooppete. Until today trev1 had never been higher than 5th and illiniman14 (he came home with a humungous 14/16) had never been higher than 7th .. illiniman14 picked the lot except for one advance pick: Liverpool as a finalist.
Dizart & paper_aero also finished at their high point for the season. On the other hand, LeoDaVinci srini701 and Sypher finished at their lowest position for the season.

This was the 10th edition of the FA Cup tipping competition (the defending titleholder was KrivoyRog). Thank you to everyone who participated, and congratulations to the three medallists!
For superhooppete, aka Mr QPR, this was his first appearance on the podium of any tipping comp, and it was gold! He hit the lead in Round Two and held it all the way to the finsih post.
All of us will now have a well-earned rest until early November, when we start this whole process all over again with the 11th edition.

Thanks for running the comp gtho4,it's been fun for me to be in my first comp and to win it was nothing more than a mIracle!!
Thanks to all the other guys for pushing me all the way and I look forward to defending my podium place next season.
All i need now is for my beloved QPR to avoid the drop on Sunday,it's going to be a tough one but fingers crossed.
