The ten 3rd Qualifying Round matches (aka the play-off round) were completed last week on Wednesday night 29th August. The 10 winners joined the 22 teams who were exempt until the Group Phase. The draw for the group phase took place on Thursday 30th August .. if you've got a few hours to kill, you can read the complete details of the qualifying & exemption procedures here : Regulations of the UEFA Champions League 2012-13. Most of the 32 teams in this year's comp are familiar names, but there are a few qualifiers whose names will be alien to most of us (see next post).

The group stage commences in a bit over a fortnight on Tuesday 18th September (the first round of the tipping comp), and the final will be played on Saturday 25th May 2013 in London at Wembley Stadium (the 19th round of the tipping comp). There's a two month mid-winter break, for all of us to grab some R&R, between the last round of the group phase on Wednesday 5th December and the start of the KO Round on Tuesday 12th February 2013.

Rules: they're the same as last year, and the year before. The rules for this comp are simple:
    points
    default
    full-time
    upsets
    perfect picks
    other bonus pts


    dead-heats
    		 one point for each correct pick.
    if you forget to pick, the away teams are all yours (ineligible for bonus pts).
    picks are H-x-A at full-time; extra time or penalty shootouts are ignored.
    if you pick a game solo (or one of two), you score a bonus point.
    8/8 scores a bonus point. You also receive a knighthood from Her Majesty.
    no one picks a win, whoever picks a draw.
    no one picks a draw, whoever picks the upset win.
    if you pick all home teams (or all bar one), you're ineligible for bonus pts.
    weekly wins vs. wooden spoon countback determine podium finishes;
    if they're identical, bonus pts will be used.
Deadline: is always kick-off in the first game of the round. Please don't wait until the death, as there are 4 time zones in Europe, and there's a good chance you'll get it wrong! If you post your tips 4 hours before the scheduled kick-off time for games in the UK, you should be safe. If you lodge your picks late you score default for that round.

No one has successfully defended their title .. and doomed is the only player who's won this more than once. He's been on the podium three times (all gold). Sypher has stepped up onto the podium 4 times (all silver). Prior winners ElfTwinkle, gtho4, ozzz2002, KrivoyRog and PaulE can win this a second time, ditto Dizart (who'd become the first to retain their title) .. or will this season see a new name etched on the trophy?

Dizart won it last year by a mere 2 pts from dg_dave .. illiniman14 collected bronze by a single point in front of a three-way tie for 4th between PaulE, Howie72 and gtho4. Three players finished last year's comp without a wooden spoon .. their spoon-less streaks will continue into this year's tipping comp:
    19 weeks : dg_dave
    27 weeks : PaulE (last spoon was in wk 11 of previous season 2010-11)
    34 weeks : Howie72 (his last spoon was in wk 4 of previous season)

This year's comp has 18 runners, which is one more than last year .. triviapaul is a no-show and wwe84 & doomed are the new recruits.

doomed is an echo from the past .. he's the only tipster who's won gold in this comp more than once. He'll get on famously with N-Bomb, another Gooner; they can remind each other about The Invincibles of 2003-04 and reminisce.

Five of the eight games were picked by most of us .. 3 of 18 picked the away win by Schalke 04 (earning themselves a bonus point), no-one picked the draw in Milan (George95 was the only one who didn't pick a home win by AC Milan, and earnt himself a bonus point). He refused to disclose the brand of his dart-board when interviewed by the local BBC radio station for their afternoon sports programme.

Manchester City broke the 0-0 deadlock in the 69th when Dzeko scored, but Real Madrid equalised within a minute. City hit the lead again when they scored with 5 minutes to go .. wwe84 and N-Bomb were looking at two points for their away pick (one for the pick plus a bonus pt), but Real Madrid equalised again (this time it took them two minutes) .. now it's KrivoyRog, George95 and gtho4 who were looking at two points, for their draw pick, as the scoreboard still showed 2-2 at the end of 90 minutes. Cristiano Ronaldo ruined it for the three of us when he scored in injury time!

dg_dave finished last year's comp without a wooden spoon. His streak has ended with a wooden spoon in Week 1. PaulE and Howie72 also finished last year's comp without a spoon .. their spoon-less streaks now stand at 28 consecutive weeks and 35 weeks.

Dizart, the defending title-holder, has already jumped into a share of the lead with szabs .. btw her local team won! Will this season see, for the first time, the defending titleholder win gold? The second round of the tipping comp is tonight.

There were three weekly winners with 5/8 and three wooden spoons with 3/8 .. and the rest of us all scored 4/8! Once again we had one game picked by no-one.

We now have a four-way tie out front, with the next four just a point in arrears .. aka the first 8 players are separated by a single point.

PaulE and Howie72 extend their spoon-less streaks to 29 weeks and 36 wks respectively. Hostilities resume in a fortnight : UEFA ( 3 ) Tue 2nd October.

BxBarracuda picks 6/8 (two of them were solo picks), and flies up the table from 14th to 2nd!

11 of 18 players all had the same score 4/8. For the 3rd straight week we had a game picked by no-one; except that this week it was two games.

The four-way tie out front is no more .. szabs is now out front all on her lonesome, one point ahead of the new occupant of 2nd place. The 12 players running 3rd to 14th are separated by a mere 2 points (that's 2/3rds of the field).

PaulE and Howie72 extend their spoon-less streaks to 30 weeks and 37 wks respectively. The 4th round of the comp is tonight: UEFA ( 4 ) Wed 3rd October.

There were 5 weekly winners and three wooden spoons this week .. it was back-to-back spoons for illiniman14.

Last week BxBarracuda picked 6/8 (two were solo picks) and flew up the table from 14th to 2nd. This week it's another 6/8 (one was a solo pick) for back-to-back wins.
He's now joint leader with szabs! The two leaders have opened up a mini-breakaway of 2 pts over the rest of the field.

The first two games were picked by no-one. PaulE picked the rest and takes out this week's win with 6/8.

Two wins and three wodens spoons - szabs and gtho4 are this week's winners with 5/8 whilst BxBarracuda, ozzz2002 and wwe84 collect a wooden spoon each with one correct pick.

szabs continues to set a cracking pace out front as she extends her lead over Dizart and srini701, who are still equal second, to 4 pts .. she picked Arsenal to lose at home! Neither doomed nor N-Bomb were happy to see the Gunners lose.

Manchester City also lost .. no-one picked that result. Three players collect a gimme point each as they had the hide to pick a draw: ozzz2002, srini701 and wwe84 (two of these three were wooden spooners).

wwe84 collects his third straight spoon and is now bringing up the rear in a three-way tie for last place .. he was in 5th place four rounds ago.

szabs retains her lead .. the margin is down slightly but it's still a healthy 3 pts.

No one picked the home win by Celtic .. illiniman14 was the lone ranger and scores a bonus point for picking a draw. One game was picked by two players for a bonus point each; and two games were picked by everyone. szabs retains her lead despite missing the early game in Moscow .. she would've scored a gimme if KrivoyRog and doomed had gone with the flow and picked a Barcelona win.

1st and 2nd retained their spots from last week, but from there down only wwe84 and BxBarracuda kept theirs from last week. N-Bomb climbed up to 10th, a new high for the season .. srini701 collected his first wooden spoon and fell to 10th, a new low.

The first three are now separated by a single point. There is a gap of 2 points back to the next six runners (who are separated by a mere 2 points) .. and you can throw a blanket over the rest of the field.

Of the five weekly winners four were back-to-back efforts: Dizart, doomed, N-Bomb and paper_aero. KrivoyRog and LeoDaVinci are still looking for their first weekly win, and N-Bomb is yet to score a bonus point.

During the last ten years we've run the Champions League comp, we've had just six perfect picks (by five different players). It's now seven perfects .. N-Bomb is this week's winner with a perfect 8/8. The Honour Roll still has the same five names on it, as N-Bomb has done it before!

With that humungous effort he flies up the table from 10th to third place! He also collected a bonus point, his first for the season; which completes that column in the standings.

It should be noted that this is his 3rd consecutive weekly win .. four weeks ago he was running 3rd last, 2 points off the bottom and 9 pts behind the leader!

dg_dave and gtho4 collect a wooden spoon each for the paltry efforts of 3/8.

szabs retains her lead for the 10th straight week .. szabs and Dizart have opened up a slight gap out front over the rest of the field, where 3 points covers the next 9 players (that's exactly half the field). Three points also covers the remaining 7 runners.

KrivoyRog and LeoDaVinci are still looking for their first weekly win.

szabs fails to lodge picks and falls back to the rest of the field. We now have a logjam out front .. the first eleven players are now separated by just four points! The other seven players are separated by a mere 5 pts.

At the end of the first round we had szabs and Dizart as joint leaders; ditto now after 11 rounds. At the end of the first round the first eleven were separated by 3 pts; after 11 rounds it's just one more - the first eleven are now separated by 4 pts.

So far, this year's comp has been a bit closer than last year's. In last year's comp, after 11 rounds, the first three were separated by 4 pts and the first eleven were separated by a mammoth 10 pts.

KrivoyRog and LeoDaVinci are still looking for their first weekly win. PaulE and Howie72 extend their spoon-less streaks to 38 weeks and 45 weeks respectively.

One more round tonight completes the group stage. The knock-out rounds start in February next year.

She returns, scores a HoF win, and is back in the lead solo .. ozzz2002 and PaulE were the other weekly winners, to leave us with a 4 point spread from 1st to 8th. It was much the same after 12 rounds in last year's comp .. 4 pts covered 1st to 7th.

KrivoyRog and LeoDaVinci are still looking for their first weekly win. PaulE and Howie72 extend their spoon-less streaks to 39 weeks and 46 weeks respectively.

That brings us to the end of the group stage. So far we've had 96 picks .. another 84 picks and we're at the finish post.

All of us will now have a rest through winter until Tuesday 12th February 2013 and the Knock-Out Round, when the ECL comes out of hibernation. The draw for the KOR will take place later this month on Thursday 20th December : www.uefa.com

szabs picked her home-town team to win away at FC Porto. They lost and, after 12 straight weeks as leader through the group stage, falls back to equal second at the start of the knock-out rounds. The defending titleholder, Dizart, takes over front-running duties.

First to ninth (that's half the field) are now separated by a mere five points. The best countback figures at +4 are held by the first two. If we stay bunched-up like we may need these countback figures at the end of the season to determine podium positions.

KrivoyRog and LeoDaVinci are still looking for their first weekly win. PaulE extends his spoon-less streak to 40 weeks.

Howie72 collected his first wooden spoon for the season, to bring to an end his spoon-less streak at 46 weeks .. his last spoon in this comp was in week 4 of the 2010-11 season! He fell one short of the all-time UEFA comp record of 47 weeks, set by LeoDaVinci. It's the 10th longest spoon-less streak for any FT comp (the all-time record is 70 weeks in the FAPL set by DanielPoulson in the FAPL comp).

We now have a three-way tie out front .. and PaulE has the best countback figures. A mere 3 pts cover the first six players, then there's a gap of two to another set of six players, who are also separated by 3 pts.

szabs has led this comp in every round except the previous one, when she picked her home-town team away at FC Porto (they lost 1-0). Malaga won the return leg 2-0 at home and progress to their first-ever quarter-final appearance. The QF draw was announced yesterday by UEFA:

The first leg will be played on Tue 2nd April and the return leg a week later. PaulE is alone out front for the first time this season. He has the best countback figures at +4. Dizart, who moves up into in equal second, is also a +4 as is this week's winner, paper_aero, who's jumped up 3 spots into equal fifth.

Apart from PaulE out front and wwe84 at the rear of the field, ozzz2002 in fifth was the only players who kept his or her spot from last week. The rest of us were playing musical chairs.

LeoDaVinci and wee84 are still looking for their first weekly win. PaulE extends his spoon-less streak to 42 weeks. As this comp has 19 rounds each season, his last wooden spoon was way back in week 11 of the 2010-11 comp!

There were *six* wooden spoons this week, spread across the whole table from top to bottom. PaulE & Dizart collect their first spoon for the season.

Sypher and N-Bomb, who scored a weekly win each, move up the table to create a crowded leader board. The first eight players are now separated by a mere four points. N-Bomb and paper_aero in 6th and 7th place have the best countback figures.

KrivoyRog collected two bonus points and moves up to 12th place, a new high for the season .. a solo pick, Bayern Munich to win away and wave good-bye to Barcelona, and he was the only one to pick Borussia Dortmund as a finalist with his advance picks. George95 and paper-aero finish the season with a perfect 8/8 .. we've now had nine perfect picks in the 10 seasons we've had the Champions League comp running here at FT. Their names have been added to the UEFA Record Book (see above).

gtho4 retained first place to collect the gold medal .. paper_aero climbed up into equal 2nd, his highest position all season (it was the only time he was in the first three spots). KrivoyRog and dg_dave also finished the season in their highest position.

paper_aero won the silver medal on a countback from Howie72, who scored bronze. The four players who finished 2nd to 5th were separated by a mere 2 pts.

N-Bomb and paper_aero finished with the best countback figures .. and they finished without a wooden spoon alongside their name. LeoDaVinci finished the season without a weekly win.

Bayern Munich lost last year's CL final in a penalty shootout against Chelsea. This year they won the title with a goal in the 89th. They join Liverpool with five titles apiece, behind Real Madrid with nine and AC Milan with 7 titles.

The defending titleholder was Dizart, and dg_dave was last year's runner-up.
This year's comp was the 10th edition and Dizart was the 7th person to win this comp .. no-one has retained their title; doomed has won this comp three times and gtho4 twice.
