Results & Standings .. World Cricket - Fri Oct 19 2012 01:08 AM

World Cricket 2012 -- November 1, 2012 to end March 2013

Any takers for the 9th edition of World Cricket? I am returning with this comp after a fairly long break, and with some interesting past stats to entice you all into taking part in what promises to be a very exciting cricket season smile

1. Nobody has ever retained their title in the 8 editions this comp has been run....N-Bomb is the defending champion and Sypher, Howie72 and srini701 won the 3 editions before him. Can N-Bomb do the unthinkable in World Cricket?

2. The 2nd place winner on the last podium LeoDaVinci, is not even from a cricket-playing nation! Beginner's luck? We'll know this season if he returns...

3. 3 debutants among the 10 who played last season, including Leo, and the other 2 (Rossian and danielPoulsen) finished mid-table.

Plenty of cricket action over the next few months, starting with a series between Sri Lanka and New Zealand (from November 1). Other than West Indies, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, we will see all other teams in play here (maybe these teams too, if the schedule fits!)

You will as usual pick 5 players for Test matches and 6 for ODI series from the list of players I will provide and you score as many points as the runs/wickets by your selected player. A carefully chosen Trump player can double your points and boost your scores considerably. If you are not a regular visitor to the forums here, you can still lodge a team at the beginning of a series and allow it to score for you till a new series comes about.

Most threads won't be up till a few days before a match/series and the comp will also involve some unannounced series and some mega bonus rounds in between (where 2 matches start on same dates).

Shout your names here for what it's worth, so I know you will be there! Hoping to see a decent turn-around and to a good, fun competition...

Illiniman, these are different cricket series that will be played over the next 4 months. Not sure if they will even be telecast in US (unless you pay for them). You can follow scores on different websites if you wish.

I can recommend http://www.espncricinfo.com/ and http://www.cricketweb.net/index.php for you to follow scores of every match and series. Both are pretty good and most cricket sites are up-to-date in terms of teams, fixtures and scores.

BTW, espncricinfo has streaming of matches and there are plenty of other websites that stream matches live.

Did they cancel today's match?

When I checked ESPN site this morning it was raining and they had another 4 hours to start the match?

Reverse spin? Bowling into a monsoon must do some crazy things to a ball...

  • Welcome to yet another edition of World Cricket. This season we go on till end of March 2013 and cover pretty much all international cricket played till then. 12 people lined up at the starting blocks this year, 2 more than last season.
  • BxBarracuda, illiniman14, wwe84 and underscored are the newcomers this year (welcome to the comp smile ) while DanielPoulsen and Rossian are the missing names from last season.
  • We chose a pretty bad series to start our season. Lots of rain meant the matches were mostly decided by the horrible Duckworth-Lewis method (don't ask me what it is!) and plenty of players didn't get a decent chance in 5 matches!
  • But cricket there was, and off the blocks in style is Sypher. He picks the first HoF for the season with some nice picks, including a well-chosen trump.
  • But he won't be too comfortable right away, with hardly anything separating the players (info for the newcomers: a lead of 250+ points can vanish in a round or two in this comp because of player forms, so nothing is finalized till almost the last few rounds smile )
  • So doomed watching the proceedings from the sidelines after lodging his tips for round 2, won't be too disappointed with the spoon score, since he knows the vagaries of this comp.

Round 2 scoring should be done soon too, but round 3 (India-England 1st Test) starts Nov 15. If you haven't lodged your tips for the round, please do so soon...

  • Welcome back to the World Cricket comp, doomed!
  • Sypher was over the moon when round 1 results were posted and rightly so...his trump this round, Michael Clarke scored a massive unbeaten double century and held 2 catches to boot and his score alone meant more than the total score of a couple of other players here. But Sypher also had Ricky Ponting and Dale Steyn in his side and that meant his eventual score, while very impressive, was not out of reach.
  • BxBarracuda proved that, with a humongous 900 points this round...he had all 3 big centurions of the Test, Amla, Kallis and Clarke in his side!!!!
  • Sypher is still in the lead but is again, NOT running away just yet....we had a surprise twin score this round when paper_aero and Howie72 both scored the exact number of points with 2 totally different sides! Pretty rare in this comp!
  • illiniman14 unfortunately picked 2 players who did not even play the Test and along with ozzz2002, picked a trump who had a forgettable Test. This meant he landed his first spoon for the season frown

Round 3 (India-England 1st Test) starts tomorrow (Nov 15). If you haven't lodged your tips for the round, please do so quickly...

  • India won the first Test against England, but not without having to struggle in the second innings. Alistair Cook produced a master class on a wicket where the demons were more in the minds of the English batsmen than the pitch, and scored his 3rd century in 3 Tests as a captain! Earlier, Cheteswar Pujara showed why he might be a worthy successor to Rahul Dravid in the number 3 spot in the Indian batting line-up with his second century in 6 Tests.
  • paper_aero picked Pragyan Ojha (of all the people!) as his trump, a move that paid rich dividends! paper_aero picks up a HoF for that move and shoots into the lead...srini701 trusted Pujara to come good and as a result, he's now in second spot.
  • On the other hand, quite a few of the selected trumps (Kohli, Tendulkar, Trott and even Kevin Pietersen) failed in this match, pulling down a few players here. Sypher, now moves to 4th spot, his lowest so far this season...wwe84 had Eoin Morgan, who did not even play, as his trump!
  • But this round's cake goes to poor ozzz2002, none of whose picks had a decent match!!!! ozzz picks up his first spoon, and pulls down not just himself, but also gtho4 and doomed, who both defaulted this round frown
  • underscored defaulted again...I will continue to score default for an entire series (in this case, the 2 series currently on) and remove the player from the scoring charts for the next series if they fail to lodge tips before then...

The next round (starting Thursday, Nov 22) is a "biggie" with both the Tests starting a day apart...things can turn very, very quickly if your picks start playing, so get in there and lodge your tips without waiting till the last minute...

That's it! I am no longer talking to Mr Tendulkar, and have crossed him off my Christmas card list.

smile smile Your selecting Tendulkar had anything to do with that Order of Australia, or did you really think Tendulkar and Ponting can still score double tons? smile

  • The Indian skipper Dhoni asked for a "turning wicket" and got his wish and his team promptly capitulated to the two England spinners Panesar and Swann crazy The series is tied 1-1 and with 2 matches to go, is worth watching now cool Unfortunately not one of us here picked Monty Panesar who took 11 wickets in the match (that's 220 points!)....
  • The other Test saw a debutant Du Plessis hold up the Australians' bid for a win even as Michael Clarke continued his absolutely brilliant summer...result: that series is still tied 0-0 with all to play for at Perth....Again, even more unfortunately, not one of us here had Du Plessis in our side and though 8 of us picked Clarke, none of us had him as our trump!!! confused
  • This meant we are all still pretty bunched up after 4 rounds...the top 3 retained their positions after round 3, and so did the last 3...but there was some movement in the middle of the table
  • doomed picked up his first HoF for the season with a fine set of picks (he would proably have scored more if he didn't have Sehwag as his trump). But both gtho4 and illiniman14 ran him pretty close this round...
  • LeoDaVinci did not lodge tips for the round but had teams for the previous 2 rounds, which scored for him this round. Imran Tahir, who replaced Vernon Philander scored for Leo this round. Leo's trump of Kevin Pietersen couldn't stop Leo from picking his first spoon for the season.

  • South Africa showed why they are the best Test side in the world with a clinical demolition of Australia in the final Test. They won by a whopping 309 runs with a day to spare, and the guard of honor they gave to poor Ponting in his final international innings was the only thing Ricky Ponting will want to remember of his final Test.....what a player! easily among the best batsmen of this or any generation and a most terrific competitor!
  • srini701 succesfully "jinxed" the Aussie skipper Michael Clarke, but seven of us still picked him as our trump...But Howie72 dared to be different and picked De Villiers as his trump this round. The move paid off most handsomely and Howie picks his first HoF this season and also moves past Sypher in the standings.
  • At the other end illiniman14 landed an unwanted second spoon as all his players (all in form over the first 2 Tests) fared badly...
  • There is little to separate the first 6 players here, but there seems to be a gap building after that...are we beginning to break away into 2 groups? Still feel it is a bit early to write this....

The next round will see the India-England 3rd Test from Wednesday Dec 5. If you haven't lodged your tips yet, don't worry, your last team from that series will still score for you....

I still say how can anyone score over 200 times?

If cricket is so similar to baseball, it can't be possible to score that many times. The highest score I've seen in a baseball game is 30 runs! (it was by the Texas Rangers too)

Hmmmmm...you should try and see a cricket for at least a few minutes if possible...maybe on youtube?

Test cricket: 5 days of 90 overs each (that's 540 balls/deliveries per day)...you can score in cricket in 1s, 2s 3s, 4s or 6s...unlike baseball where one hit over the park is a homerun (and a score of 1 or max of 4 if the bases are full), here you have a max of 6. In cricket an innings last till 10 people are out, not 3...still confusing? try and catch some action on espncricinfo if there's a match streaming or on youtube smile

You lost me right there...what is an over? The only "over" I know is the preposition (over a bridge, over a barrel, etc.) Do they throw the ball over 90 times? confused

The only thing that makes sense is that you get 3.333333... times the outs. But still, 200/300/400 runs in two innings?

Re: Results & Standings .. World Cricket - Mon Dec 03 2012 11:14 PM

An over is 6 bowls - so they throw it 540 times. The first match I ever tried to watch was test cricket... BIG mistake. I'll stick to 20/20.

I could see a major league pitcher throw 540 pitches...yeah right! wink

Guess it's just too confusing for this Yank!

Re: Results & Standings .. World Cricket - Tue Dec 04 2012 12:31 AM

Another major difference is the scoring area. In baseball, the only balls that score are in an arc between 1st and 3rd base, about 90 degrees. Anything outside that area does not count. In cricket, there are NO 'off-limit' areas, so if a ball is hit over the wicketkeeper's (aka catcher), it is still live. Most cricket grounds in the world would be at least three times the area of a baseball field, which makes scoring a bit easier.

Also, a run in baseball involves running 90*4= 360 ft; a run in cricket is the length of the pitch- 66ft. As Srini touched on, if a batsman hits the fence, it counts as 4 runs, and over the fence is 6.

mate, have a read of this:
This short explanation will help you understand the gentleman's game.

Quote:
Although it may be difficult to take seriously a game which includes jargon like "silly mid off" (a fielding position) and "out for a duck" (bowled out on the first ball), cricket is in fact, a sport with a massive International following.

This may be surprising as the game has a reputation for being fiendishly complicated, but as the following humorous exposition, "cricket as explained to a foreigner," shows, cricket is actually simplicity itself.

"You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he is out. When they are all out, the side that's been out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out.

"When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out, he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who are all out all the time, and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game."

I hope this will help you understand cricket.

Cricket rules not that all confusing!

Yep...thanks George smile...Dave will NEVER try to understand the game now smile

Ozzz got it right about the runs and the field, Dave...maybe that will help you understand why there are so many "runs" in cricket smile

yes, illiniman, stick to 20-20...fun to watch, all slam-bang, but it's still cricket all right and you will at least know how the game is played smile

Re: Results & Standings .. World Cricket - Tue Dec 04 2012 04:26 AM

And they do not use the same bowler (pitcher). Out of the eleven players on a team, there would be 4 or 5 specialist bowlers, and maybe a couple more that can bowl if required. There are two main types of bowlers- fast bowlers, and spin bowlers. One will try to get the batsman out with pace (up to around 160kph) and the other will try to fool the bat with movement and spin.

A bowler is only allowed one over (6 balls) in succession and another bowler has a turn. Two good fast bowlers operating together can break a batting team apart (google 'Lillee and Thompson'!). The absolute maximum number of overs by a single bowler would be 45, but it is rather uncommon for a captain to use the same one all day. A spinner may do 30 overs (180 balls) or so in a day, but a quick would usually do less.

Confusticated yet? smile

Re: Results & Standings .. World Cricket - Tue Dec 04 2012 06:06 AM

Some of it makes a little more sense, like the runs scored. Sounds like the field is around 900-1200' instead of the baseball sized 325-400'. The fast bowlers throw about the speed of Verlander in the 8th and 9th inning (~100mph).

Just wish India had a couple of bowlers who can consistently and really bowl at that 100mph speed, ozz frown

I think we might need one or two, too, after that dismal Test against South Africa. Bring back Thommo! smile

Call me crazy if you will, but I think Alastair Cook has a future in cricket.

  • India got walloped by England in the 3rd Test and have lost back to back home Tests for only the 3rd time in the last 10 years frown The team is just not good enough with the bat, or the ball or in the field, and the tragedy is, we don't even have replacements who can step up frown
  • N-Bomb had a massive round there and jumped into second spot, a season high for him...Sypher also had a good round there and moved up
  • srini701's new "formula" exploded in his face, leaving him with a red face and his first spoon for the season, as he drops 3 places on the ladder
  • underscored will drop off the scoreboard if they fail to lodge tips for the next round...will it be ozzz2002, doomed or wwe84 in the cellar at the end or round 7? As interesting a battle at the bottom of the table as at the top!

The next round is again a double-header, so plentttyyy of points to win or lose....a new Test series begins, so if you don't lodge a team, remember will only score a 0 for that Test (coz you will still have a default India-England team scoring in one Test).

So get in there well before Thursday and please lodge your teams if you haven't done so already...

  • I was in mourning since Monday, hence did not post the results immediately frown ....India lost a Home Test series for the first time in more than 8 years, it's clear Dhoni's shelf-life as India's captain is over and yet, we cannot do anything about it, all my picks bombed badly and the trumps I choose are either failing miserably or worse still, walking away injured frown frown
  • India were outplayed on all fronts - batting, bowling, fielding, captaincy and thoroughly deserved to be beaten by a very professional and competitive England side...I can foresee a defeat against Australia too in February at this rate frown
  • Australia meanwhile won their first Test for the season but are down a fast bowler (srini managed to jinx and put Hilfenhaus out of the whole series jus by picking him as his trump!). Australia will possibly be without Michael Clarke too for the Boxing Day Test
  • 5 people managed scores of over a 1000 points here and we have a new leader...N-Bomb becomes the third player on top of the leaderboard as paper_aero slips badly...
  • BxBarracuda picks up his second HoF for the season with a very well-crafted team and he also moves back into second spot...whatever made LeoDaVinci pick Trott as his trump worked, as Leo also made a huge splash this round.
  • Ozzz2002 managed to have 3 players this round who did not score him a single point, including a trump player!!! and he still beat srini701 by a handsome margin crazy mad

The next round is the Boxing Day Test from December 26 and if you don't want to change your team, you will still score some points from the previous team...but remember, Australia is likely to have some changes to their side...

<<Edited to update score of Ozzz, as I had Ian Bell's total wrong...Can't change scoring table below as it is a huge task smile >>

  • Australia duly crushed a hapless Sri Lankan team in less than three days to go 2-0 up in the 3 match series. But their team selections continue to puzzle everybody...
  • An injured Michael Clarke was given time till the last minute to prove his fitness and he led the side (with yet another century in the match)...but Mitchell Starc, who took 6 and 5 wickets in his 2 previous Tests, was replaced by Mitchell Johnson....
  • That direct replacement helped 6 of us here as Mitchell Johnson had a very good Test...Kulasekara in the Lankan side was replaced by Dhammika Prasad, which also helped one of us.
  • Taking his first HoF for the season with Johnson helping him out is illiniman14, while BxBarracuda takes home his first spoon for the season.

The India-Australia fixtures have been announced and the dates match exactly with a couple of other series, so we will close this season as planned at end of March (18 rounds in all)...plenty of rounds with double-header Tests now, so lots of movement can still be expected over the next few rounds...

The next round is a double-header and starts January 2 with a new series, so please do remember to lodge your tips in time.

Wishing you all a very happy, peaceful and healthy New Year and looking forward to lots and lots of exciting and friendly competition in 2013...

  • There was plenty of drama on the field all right in the first round of the New Year. New Zealand embarrassed themselves and lost the Test in less than 100 minutes on the first day. Sri Lanka put up some fight but couldn't stop Mike Hussey from bowing out of international cricket with a final win for his team.
  • There was as much drama here in our ranks. illiniman14 picked Taylor (??) in his squad. I presume he meant Ross Taylor, who wasn't even in the squad. Instead of a zero, I allowed the least score in the Kiwis side for him (which unfortunately was 1 by Guptill frown )
  • Then, ozzz2002 managed to pick Nuwan Kulasekara in his side. Kulasekara was in the squad, he hadn't played the second Test, so did not have a direct replacement, meaning ozzz get a zero for this player.
  • Sypher and Doomed both failed to lodge teams for the South Africa Test. Both were scored the default score of 209, which was the wooden spoon score for that Test (by wwe84). Sypher got in time for the Australia Test and lodged an exact side as doomed's default side from the previous round, which meant both finished the round with a very decent score at the end...
  • But taking the cake this round is N-Bomb....He managed to have both Sangakkara and Shane Watson in his side....both were out, but at least Sanga had a direct replacement in the 3rd Test (Thirimanne)...N-Bomb probaby shot himself in the foot by picking Shane Watson as his trump (and he posted his team AFTER I edited the squads frown )....Watson had no direct replacement in the team, meaning n-bomb allowed paper_aero to slip back into the driver's seat at the end of the round.

The next round is again a real big one, covering 10 ODIs in all...unfortunately, India and Australia named their teams for only the first half of the matches, while we pick our teams here for the entire round (no replacements scoring this round)...so try and pick your teams carefully and please do so BEFORE end of January 10.

Costly mistake, I think I took Sangakkara as well :-/. And that was after correcting everyone's NZ mistakes! *Sigh*. World cricket is one of the few comps where focus and attention to detail is crucial!

  • Massive round that! 10 ODI matches spread over 16 days, 4 countries and almost 60 players in action...can't get any bigger than that!
  • Australia scraped through to tie their series against Sri Lanka at 2-2 and Sri Lanka will rightly feel they were robbed of a win in the fourth ODI...Australia used 17 players in this series and are still nowhere close to finding their best ODI combination after the exit of Michael Hussey and the injury to Shane Watson frown and a weird "rotation policy"!
  • India won their series against England 3-2 and climbed back to number 1 spot in the ODI table (on decimal point difference)
  • Over here, srini701 picked his first HoF and with a poor round from Sypher, climbed up one spot. gtho4 picked his first spoon as well, but stayed put in his place.
  • There was no change in the top 4 places with paper_aero extending his lead over N-Bomb to over 150 points, but there was plenty of movement at the bottom of the table. Ozzz2002 climbed off the bottom with a very good round, wwe84 moved up as well, with doomed defaulting this round. doomed drops to the cellar for the first time this season.
  • We welcome a new player Daaanieeel this round...He had an excellent round there and takes position in the middle rungs...will he lodge tips for the next rounds and stay the course or is he another of those just dropping by???? We'll know by the next round smile

The next round sees another fresh series and a new team, Pakistan for the first time this season. This will make it all the top 8 teams in the world in action in this season's World Cricket comp, except for West Indies smile

  • "Life's not fair!" I picked Dale Steyn as my trump, not once, but twice in this comp this season and that chap didn't do me any favours! paper_aero picks him as his trump this round and look what Steyn has done! He blew the Pakistanis away with a stunning display of fast bowling and won for paper more points as a trump than the entire score of some of us others here frown
  • "Size also does not always matter!" srini701, Howie72 and wwe84 learnt this the hard way this round...they picked the seven foot-tall Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Irfan and Pakistan instead played a replacement fast bowler in the Test! Serves The Pakistanis right for ignoring a "giant" of a bowler smile
  • paper_aero skips away to the biggest lead of the season with his 3rd HoF performance of the season, while wwe84 lands his 2nd spoon for the season
  • what gives srini701 in 6th place hope still in this season's comp? There are some more multi-team rounds left and who knows what may happen? paper_aero may yet pick a trump who will pull out on day 1 of a Test match this season and srini's trumps may yet score double centuries or take 10 wickets in the same Test grin wink

  • South Africa completed their fifth win in a row and won their sixth consecutive series despite a tough fight from a few Pakistanis....The DRS review thing was fun to watch in this Test...Kallis was given out caught, poor chap reviewed it...3rd umpire said he was not out caught, but out LBW! No cricket rule says you can actually change the manner in which the batsman was given out...if the review was for caught and the batsman did not touch the ball, he should have been asked to continue his innings, not given out in another way!!!! BCCI and team India will suddenly feel justified in continuing to oppose the DRS smile smile {http://www.espncricinfo.com/page2/content/story/605345.html}
  • But quite a few of us had Kallis as our trump here and so we can all feel let down this round by a poor decision frown
  • Not so paper_aero, who skips away to a humongous lead over the next-best (n-bomb) and probably can afford to default a round and still retain his lead at the top
  • BxBarracuda and Howie72 also cross the 10k points for the season and at least 2 or 3 more will join them there next round...can all of us cross the 10k mark for the season?
  • wwe84 goes from spoon to hero in 2 rounds, while ozzz2002 gets his second spoon for the season despite having a decent side!

The next round sees the start of the India-Australia series...so please try and lodge your tips for that Test before the match starts on February 22

Re: Results & Standings .. World Cricket - Fri Feb 22 2013 09:09 AM

Those of us who picked Ojha get a zero (he was not injured..just not picked that's all)...those of us who picked Kallis, his replacement player (some Abbott) will score for them, since this was a case of an injury ruling a player who would otherwise have played, out of the team...

I am letting Dhoni be a trump for illiniman since I should have updated the first post and let people know of the Australian team when it was known well before the start (in a way, my fault frown ). There are no replacements in such case, so illiniman will only score for 4 players...I didn't want to penalise him for something not his fault...would have done the same for wwe84 too smile

Re: Results & Standings .. World Cricket - Fri Feb 22 2013 11:24 AM

Apparently just before the toss!! Here's the commentary from cricinfo:
**************************

Toss, 10am: Graeme Smith has won the toss and South Africa will bat first. We feel the pitch will take a bit of turn as the game goes on", says Smith. Kallis is out with a calf injury, during an optional practice session (!). Abbot makes his debut.

Misbah: "We were looking to bowl first anyway." Three changes to the side. Nasir Jamshed, Umar Gul and Tanvir Ahmed are not playing. Imran Farhat, Ehsan Adil and Rahat Ali are playing.

So one debut on either side. Ehsan Adil, the right-arm seamer, will play his first Test, as will Kyle Abbott. Umar Gul isn't feeling well. And of course, Kleinveldt comes in for Morkel.

Firdose informs me that Kyle Abbott is the first Dolphins player to play (excluding Imran Tahir who is a foreigner) since Imraan Khan in 2009.

Vinayak-Nadkarni: "Oh Pak! What have you done? Being an Indian, inspite of Ind-Aus series, I was looking forward for this match. Still no Abdur rehman? And come on, don't you think Nasir Jamshed needed a longer rope? And lastly, better Umar gul be injured else, I am switching tabs."

Javed: "What rubbish selection by pakistan. Why keep persisting with Imran Farhat?? Bring young blood in if this is learning series, where is Junaid khan?? Why rahat again??? Come on!" Junaid probably hasn't recovered from his injury. Otherwise he would have walked in.

9.45am: Welcome everyone to our continuing coverage of this Test series. It's the start of the third Test at Centurion. It's sunny out there.

The first bit of news we have today is that Jacques Kallis is injured and Kyle Abbot will make his debut. Not sure yet what the injury is. Read about it on Twitter. Will keep you updated. The toss will be on shortly.

  • South Africa completed a sweep of Pakistan while India won their opening Test against Australia...
  • Some replacements, some players did not play, some of us got lucky, some of us didn't...this was a funny round in many ways frown
  • Jacques Kallis was injured during "optional practice" and was replaced at the last minute by some unknown player. 2 of us had Kallis as trump...the replacement player did execeedingly well and won a ton of points for Howie, N-Bomb and others frown
  • Pragyan Ojha was supposed to be the main spinner for India...He was not even pickedm in the side and 4 of us who picked him scored a zero of our confidence in him frown
  • I allowed Dhoni to be the trump for illiniman only because Dhoni was the first named player in his side and his original trump was not even playing...Dhoni hammered a huge double hundred and won a bucketful of points for illiniman frown

I can go on and on, but I won't....N-Bomb cuts a little into paper_aero's lead, but paper is still very healthily placed to win this comp at this point...but one never knows with cricket smile BxBarracuda slipped off the podium place after a fairly long time, but he will have his chances....especially with some more cricket involving Pakistan and New Zealand before our season is done smile

  • India trashed a listless Australia in less than four days to go 2-0 up in the 4-match series...It is going to be a loooooonnnngggg trip for the poor Australians frown
  • srini701 picked up second HoF for the season, while ozzz2002 made it a hat-trick of spoons, but both those names are now only academic as far as this season's comp is concerned...
  • paper_aero has more or less sewn this one up, while N-Bomb should be up there on the podium too...the last 4 rounds should be of interest only to the 3 people behind N-Bomb to see which of them can make it to the podium smile
  • Australia did not name their XI this time, so there was no question of Mitchell Johnson scoring points if he didn't play...He was not in the side...as was Pragyan Ojha, who also was not picked...Nathan Lyon was also dropped (not replaced because of injury), hence I could not score any replacement points for him too...Sorry, illiniman...you took a chance, it didn't work out this round smile

  • After rain washed out the first day, England was surprised by a spirited bowling and terrific batting display from New Zealand before batting out most of the last 2 days to hold on to a draw...anybody thinks New Zealand can make a serious series out of this? My feeling is England will come into their own and run rough-shod in the next 2 Tests smile We'll see!
  • Normally our cutoff time is Toss on opening day, but for this round, I decided to make an exception and that allows BxBarracuda to scrape together another HoF for the season. Can he still make a late bid for the podium?
  • Howie72 picked his first spoon of the season and allowed Sypher to pass him. The last 3 rounds should mostly be between these 3 gentlemen as they fight for the last podium place.

  • This was originally Round 17, but with Round 16 (South africa-Pakistan 5 match ODI series) not finishing for another week, I decided to make this as round 16 for scoring. The SA-Pak tips will now be considered the penultimate round.
  • wwe84 had a fantastic round there, with his pick of Ravindra Jadeja as a trump knocking every one of us out. Most of us had Michael Clarke and Alistair Cook as our trumps and both failed badly frown
  • BxBarracuda was the worst hit this round, following up his HoF from the last round with a spoon in this one, and also tumbling a few places on the ladder. Howie72 also had a second consecutive average round (poor guy never seems to score with his home team! confused ) and as a result the 3rd podium fight is suddenly betwen Sypher and srini701 now...who knows what other surprises are still in store out here?

Re: Results & Standings .. World Cricket - Fri Mar 22 2013 01:08 AM

gtho, Sypher, N-Bomb, Leo (default team from last round) all have Michael Clarke in their sides. There will be no replacement for Clarke since I had mentioned this well in advance and had underlined his name in the original post.

The only replacement this round would be for Leo's default team. He had Kevin Pietersen as a trump 2 rounds back and I am allowing Pietersen's replacement Bairstow to score for Leo, only because of the trump situation and because of the default team status.

Sorry, N-Bomb...

For future comps, let's have a replacement player every round (like Nascar) so even if your named player does not play, you have a standby player scoring for you...

  • paper_aero put in one of the most dominating performances in the World Cricket tipping comp this season and made it a one-man show for more than half the comp. He left the rest of us fighting for the other podium places and deserved to win the comp by a country mile....well done to paper_aero for becoming the 9th different winner of this comp in 9 seasons!

  • N-Bomb comfortably held off srini701 and Sypher for 2nd place, and after winning the comp last year, makes it back-to-back podium finishes...one interesting side fact here: srini701 was on podium in 2010 and 2011, failed to make it a hat-trick last year. Sypher was on podium in 2011 and 2012, failed to make it a hat-trick this year. So by that token....

  • Sypher would probably have made it a hat-trick of podiums had he not been distracted the last two rounds. However, both he and N-Bomb have an impressive streak going...Both of them got their last spoon in the 2010-2011 season, which means they both have now gone 2 complete seasons without a spoon...Sypher (36 rounds and counting) and N-Bomb (38 rounds and counting) have something more to look forward to now in next season's comp smile

  • srini701 managed to finish third in the comp, but he was never consistent and it was only in the last couple of rounds that his picks paid off. Howie72 finished fourth, but he was always there and about the top, and may probably have made it to the podium had the last few rounds NOT featured his home team grin

  • BxBarracuda was another who was consistently at the top of the ladder for most part of the season before falling off in the last few rounds...his chance will come...as will illiniman14's...illiniman finished strongly and may surely have a say in the standings the next season...

  • LeoDaVinci did not win a single HoF this season but had some really good rounds in between and may well have finished higher had he not defaulted a couple of rounds...gtho4, ozzz2002 and wwe84 all had a mixed season, good one round and bad the next, and occupied the last 3 slots on the ladder.

  • We had underscored, Daaaniel and Doomed dropping in at various stages of the comp, so I have to make an honorable mention of them...it is always nice to have more numbers, but just wish people hang around till the comp is over confused

Let's not talk of the last 2 matches and anger ozzz further (for keeping faith in Sachin Tendulkar one last time)...Sachin might still be there when India goes to South Africa towards the year end...and let gtho4 have the last word in this season's comp, befitting his team's showing in India..."What do you call an Aussie legend? .... Retired."

Geez, 38 weeks, not bad at all! Something to aim for next season then. Congrats to paper_aero, I never really had a big chance to catch up, and well done srini for both running an excellent comp and nearly catching me there at the end, I was worried for sure.

Srini, thank you for running it and even more for ending it when you did - I was starting to slide back down hill with the last two rounds.
