Picture my record. - Wed Nov 18 2009 12:08 PM

I'd like to start a new thread if I may. The idea is to match one of your own photos with a song, old or new.
As an example and to get the ball rolling:

Led Zeppelin - Misty Mountain Hop

'Sailing' - Rod Stewart.

Re: Picture my record. - Wed Nov 18 2009 01:55 PM

It's a cool idea, Martin. Thanks for suggesting it.
I might ask in future if everyone could run these ideas past me first? Ta.

We probably should put the same rules here .. one post per person per day, people shouldn't be the focal point, you must have taken the pic and so on.

Now to get my thinking cap on.

Re: Picture my record. - Wed Nov 18 2009 06:19 PM

Sorry, I didn't mean to jump the gun & break protocol. I've gotten used to starting threads on any old thing on our team's message board & automatically posted this idea when it came to me.

I had intended that the usual one photo per day rule applied as well as your other normal conditions. I'll know better next time. (What next time? )

Thanks everyone! It was taken in Sydney earlier this year. I was quite pleased with my first attempts at night-time shots with the camera I bought for the trip.

On my stopover in Singapore, and a walk in Canning Park, I came across this:

"Blowin' in the Wind", Bob Dylan

Gatsby: Very poignant submission there.
Paul: looks like there are lots of great cars in that museum - I sure wouldn't want the job of polishing them though lol.
Lily: both photos are very colourful! (what model camera did you end up buying?)
Martin: you're a "hoot" : )

For my first digital camera, I was looking for something fairly compact with a reasonable zoom, and ended up purchasing, after researching and reading many reviews, a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ4. As I have no idea about cameras, I have to admit to using it on 'intelligent auto' all the time!

Martin: well thanks for the compliment, but I must confess I wasn't slogging through the African wilderness or anything when I took it lol. This hippo was housed at the San Diego Zoo. The accommodations for the larger animals are quite roomy (for a zoo anyway). In this case, there was even see-through glass on one side of the pool so that you could view them underwater. I'm not quite sure why they bothered with that, since, as hippos are voracious eaters, the water ends up MUCH too murky to see much LOL

My Own Little Corner - Rodgers And Hammerstein

A note of explanation on this one: this is my "for years" desk -- hauled around with me through thick and thin. Used to be there was a typewriter (which I still have, using it or not) in the middle of it, surrounded by reference books ... and pencils that had erasers on them ... and little bottles of Wite-Out instead of edit buttons. Spent a lot of time sitting there, even though now it's just a place to stick *stuff* with a faux tree looming (a memento from my ol' house and grounds ~ not just any tree, those branches were once a bit o' an ornamental bush). The stuff one needs to write things, now, won't fit over there [not enough nearby plugs, jacks or anything useful within the right amount of nearby footage]. But? It's still my corner of the world.

Re: Picture my record. - Sat Oct 16 2010 08:47 AM

Auntie: don't feel bad. I never liked that song, but for some strange reason, I actually know the lyrics off by heart. How sad is THAT??

Mehaul: you can always "blur" any recognizable faces and still post them (mind you, if the pic you took was an extreme closeup, I guess there wouldn't be much point lol).

SpanishLiz: I didn't think it was too much of a stretch at all. Nice pic too. It would also fit with "Yakety Yak" by the Coasters.

Re: Picture my record. - Mon Nov 08 2010 01:54 AM

Love all the photos! Long time no see, and I really should have apologized sooner blush for the disappearance of all my photos as I can see (after receivng PM) it has messed up the continuity. But being unable to take photos, or even raise my arm at all for over six months due to shoulder injury (fight with a wheelie bin!) I'm afraid it just slipped my mind.

I somehow (probaby too many pain killers) inadvertently deleted my whole Photobucket FT album when I was renaming and organizing. I lost a lot of the originals when I bought a new pc and they did not transfer due to damaged hard drive (according to PC World). I have a few that I saved to disk but I think it would take me for ever to sort through them all and work out what went where on the threads. Also, many photos were 'one offs' for FT which I did not save. I'm disappointed too, as I've lost a great number of my photos, many quite special to me.

I really ought to get my camera out again.....

Traditionally, owners bury only the heart (representing stamina), head (intelligence) and hooves (speed/agility) when a famous racehorse dies. At The Kentucky Horse Park, the valiant are buried in entirety.

John Henry was a very famous horse who was named after the American folk hero, the "steel drivin' man". Both legends of their time.

The one on the left is Rudi, he's the 11 year old, and the other is Kimber (she's the delinquent). They're not related but we did, at one point, think about breeding from them but Kimber has a genetic skin problem that could be passed on. The lion isn't in my garden. I wish it was. Re: Picture my record. - Sun Jul 17 2011 06:43 PM

It's the West Pier in Brighton & Hove. It was one of the most elegant of the traditional English piers, perhaps even the most elegant. But from the 1970s onwards it suffered a series of disasters - it was damaged by a devastating storm, a terrible fire, then another storm.

Brighton has another pier - former residents like me still call that one the Palace Pier but it has now been renamed as the Brighton Pier, no doubt a sad recognition that the West Pier will never be restored.

However, the photographer in me can't resist the West Pier as it is now - a derelict, burned, rusting hulk that absorbs light and makes the sea sparkle in contrast. Near every dead pier there's a camera waiting to pan out. wink

Re: Picture my record. - Mon Jul 18 2011 01:19 AM

It's always a great shame when one of those magnificent structures is allowed to decline like that. We had a huge fire at the closest pier to me - Weston-Super-Mare - a few years ago. Fortunately only the building was lost so the owners were able to replace it. It's not as good as the original I'm told but it has to be better than letting it become another victim.

It is rumoured that the Simon and Garfunkel song "Bridge Over Troubled Water" was written by Paul Simon whilst he was in the UK as a young man. It is also something of a myth that it was written about the bridge that crosses the River Exe here in Devon at a place called Bickleigh.... Bickleigh Bridge is only a mile or so from where I live, and so, I thought that you might all like to see it!

I love Devon even though I am Cornish!(My family come from Mylor in the south near Falmouth). I know Devon well though as my Dad retired from the BBC in London,to Northam (near Bideford) He said that he went to Devon as Cornwall was "too dang far!". My Mum retired to Seaton on the South Coast. So in visiting them both I got to see a lot of that gorgeous county. Bickleigh Bridge just holds tender memories, although as you say, it doesnt look too"tender" in your pic! Thanks for the memory.(Oooer, another song!)

From photobucket, LEFT click the bottom link (img box) from the four choices. It should give you a little balloon that says "copied".
Then put your cursor in THIS space, right click and select paste.
By the way, there should be NO spaces between the HTML image codes and the filepath (at least not in HERE, anyway).

p.s. I don't know how to paste an actual image (that you can view without clicking on the link) in the Team Message Forums. I don't think you can, actually, anywhere but on the team "front page". It is POSSIBLE in a PM, but I believe that's quite frowned upon lol

Adorable Gees. Molly has VERY expressive eyes! Don't know how anyone could resist playing catch with an "expectant" look like that!

"Barracuda" - Heart

Photo taken in Cuba. Yes it's a real (real dead) fish with really really sharp teeth (probably eaten by a bigger one of its own kind).
Sorry for the "graininess" - it was pouring rain at the time - but I took the picture anyway because I was amused by
the ocean waves producing a "face-plant" not associated with human sports activities : )

Re: Picture my record. - Tue Jul 17 2012 07:54 PM

Thanks Ren and Christina!

For those interested in "strategies" for taking zoo pics ... here's the link to the original picture (which had cage bars in the way). There were actually two cats in their shelter (out of the sun), but I couldn't make a final photo of both because of the chain link fence.

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu309/Jakeroo510/P1010028.jpg

Hints? Use your zoom if you have one, focus on the animal's eyes. The bars will then be out of focus and can be cropped out afterwards. If you have your camera set on "multi pixels" before you take the picture, you will still end up with a fairly detailed/sharp photo once cropped and resized to fit the format here. I absolutely never "mess" with contrast, brightness, hue saturation or anything else that I don't think is "fair" (unless you actually used a specific lens to get that particular effect) - just cropping. In this case, the animal was "outdoors", so an added "plus" is that I didn't have to deal with the extra dilemma of glass/plexiglas.

If you don't care about any of the above, well I'm just happy if you enjoyed the cat's smirk : )))))))))))

Dot: nice shot of Chicago. Everytime I've flown over it (please, no remarks about brooms folks lol) it's been either cloudy or dark. Am jealous!

Christina: loved both the horse and the "bookends". Can't believe those two boys managed to stand that close without fighting!

Alex: ok you. I suspect that you have lots of wonderful photographs your harddrive is just "sitting on". The Perth photo shows you already instinctively know how to frame an inordinately lovely view by including things that are closer to you. I've heard you're pretty well-travelled for someone young enough to be my grand-daughter, so I'd love to see more of your adventures. You'd better start posting more pix or we'll find out where you live by torturing your brother LOL! (oh wait, maybe that's an incentive to NOT participate further? lol!!) SpanishLiz: Nice! (no, I mean Perth! lol). When you took that photo were you leaning out a window/railing, or standing on a bridge?

I once had the opportunity to go golfing with some folks in Jacksonville Florida. I saw gators on several holes. On one of them my golf ball landed near a gator and I asked "what do I do now?"
