Thank you, I'm glad you liked my idea and I hope it's a success.

early in the day.)

Flowers for Algernon - Daniel Keyes

Re: Picture Book - Mon Jul 18 2011 12:37 PM

Wow. Are those gorgeous flowers real flopsy? They seem too vivid to be real smile Anyway, here's Oliver Twist as seen in Auckland.

Re: Picture Book - Mon Jul 18 2011 01:27 PM

They were real, yes. They formed a suspended carpet of flowers - each stem went through a mesh and was inserted into a tube filled with water. The tubes were bound with thread so that they looked like bobbins - like this and this. The floral exhibition was in Salisbury Cathedral - the Royal Wilton Carpet Factory used to be in a neighbouring town, hence the association with carpet-making.

Edited to include second image.

Christina: those Humboldt penguins are SO cute. I know they look like "clowns" but they're pretty intelligent for birdbrains. We were very lucky to visit the Calgary Zoo quite early in the morning (so no lineups!) this past week to see their newly opened Penguin Plunge exhibit/habitat. I got the impression they were even more curious about "us" LOL.

Gees: Fits the song PERfectly. (not that anyone cares, but "daddy long legs" is usually a nickname for a certain spider on this side of the pond. Some folks over here (with the possible exception of the Maritime provinces) are more likely to call the insect in your photo a 'mosquito hawk'. It's actually a crane fly). Cool post Gees!
