Here's a new month in a new year , Welcome all.

On Sunday, we went to the skydiving jump area not far from where we live and watched hundreds of jumpers. Planes are going up continuously dropping 10-20 people at a time. Most of these guys are experts and when they come in for landing, they come in fast to a sliding halt. It's an awesome way to spend an afternoon.

Keeping with parachutes, here are some parasailors in the sound near Cape Hatteras, NC
(I was much farther away from them than you were, ClaraSue)

Cool start to the year smile
Hope it's a good year for everyone! x

Here is a view of the lake from the water. This is where we put in New Year's Eve and Day. that white dot in the middle was the camp for 6 adults and 4 kids. We did reflect on how the 1.6 million people on the Sydney Harbour foreshore were doing and decided that the four kids running around with sparklers was enough of a fireworks show for us if we didn't have to share it with anyone else. smile

A lovely clear blue winter's day sky, and after what seems like weeks and weeks of rain I can't tell you how welcome a sight that is.

We have also started the year with sunshine and blue skies - and lots of snow on the ground!

Re: Happy January 2013! - Tue Jan 01 2013 07:29 PM

Very pretty Liz. Is that about the normal snow amount for the time of year?
Posted by: spanishliz

Re: Happy January 2013! - Tue Jan 01 2013 07:57 PM

Pretty normal, though last year there was less (a lot less) and I remember an awful lot more when I was a kid, though possibly just because I was shorter then smile

Howie, looks like mom and aunt taking the kids out. laugh

Very nice photo, Chavs.

Here's a persons first time jump in tandem with an instructor. I wish it had not been so cloudy that day, it would have been nice to have blue sky behind them. grin My two young cousins jumped that way this day, as well.

Re: Happy January 2013! - Wed Jan 02 2013 12:18 PM

Howie, you can almost hear the two adults saying things like "stay together now kids", "look out for any nasty things", just generally nagging them to behave.

You caught that reflection beautifully.

Thanks for the nice comments on my red berry photo - we haven't had any snow here yet but the white wall against which the berry bush was growing gives much the same effect. Less trouble though.

Those birdlets are sweet.

I call this "The Day of the Living Vampires". It may not look much to you but every Monday morning I put everything into this, blood, sweat, tears... well, blood anyway. They may call themselves the NHS Anti-Coagulation Service, but I know what they are, vampires! Mwahahahaha!

PS I do hope no one is squeamish. wink
PPS The technician asked about my new camera so I took it in to show her and while I was demonstrating the bells and whistles, I took this by mistake, lol. Blame Jakeroo, she said she wanted to see more of my pics. tongue

That looks familiar Flopsy, I don't go every week but often enough. Yes, we call them the vampires too. In truth they are a lovely bunch of ladies and are on my Christmas card list.

Re: Happy January 2013! - Wed Jan 02 2013 06:53 PM

It looks rather like my nanking cherry bushes (they are small and sour but make excellent jelly/jam), but of course, there is no fruit on mine at this time of year that is that red looking lol. I always make sure not to pick them all in any case, as the birds are extremely fond of the dried ones in our harsh winters.

Copago: your shots in the last 5 months continue to amaze me (I LOVED the one of the dog and your boots - you need to get that one blown up and framed). And sorry Sue, but polishing them would have ruined the whole effect - boots need to look LIVED in lol. I also think that your version of New Year's with your family was a zillion times more meaningful than some glitzy "do" in any city.

David: do you have a fish eye function on your new camera?

Flopsy: LOL! I did say that and I meant it, so thanks for posting one! And no I'm not the slightest bit "squeamish". You have a NEW camera?? Oh my, please do post to our (also new) "review" thread called "My Camera". I think you could probably take great photos with a toothbrush lol, but it would interesting to find out what things you like/dislike in comparison to your previous "baby"

Howie: Ducklings are probably my favourite baby animal photos. Not sure why, must have had a warped childhood lol. Nice capture

ClaraSue: cool sky-jumping pics. Okay, maybe I AM "squeamish" about something after all lol.

If I missed anyone, it wasn't on purpose, all the photos are really wonderful.

Between my laptop hard drive dying an extremely early death during Christmas (the thing was less than 1.5 years old), I've lost an astonishing amount of photos (yes yes I know, put them on a cd/flash drive immediately, sadly I didn't take my own advice, sigh). Anyway, I promise to post more once I take more : )

Well, it's not ultra-new, I bought it for the Olympics - small, portable, nice zoom. And yes, I'll add something to the thread in a day or so. Brand of toothbrush, quality of bristles, etc. wink

Re: Happy January 2013! - Wed Jan 02 2013 10:26 PM

Love your family of birds, Howie! How sweet! Great moon photo, stunning! I'm also loving all the parachutists - I've often thought I'd like to try that.

We used to have a "What Is This?" thread, and this photo would have fit there very well. I could pretend I took it on purpose, but that would be fibbing. I imagine most of you can guess not only what it is, but how it happened, eh? smile

Re: Happy January 2013! - Thu Jan 03 2013 05:41 PM

I like those Howie. The heads remind me of geese - are they a water bird?

One of my close neighbours keeps chickens, and here is one

Posted by: Howie72

Re: Happy January 2013! - Thu Jan 03 2013 06:25 PM

Pukekos are also known as swamp hens so live by water, they can fly short distances but not their preferred method of moving as they are quite awkward fliers. I know this as I was out cycling one day and distubed one by the side of the road and it took off and flew, just about knocking me off the bike. Landed in the paddock on the other side of the road...lol

Re: Happy January 2013! - Thu Jan 03 2013 06:55 PM

Howie, your birds look very similar to an Australian Dusky Moorhen, a fairly common water bird over here.

Re: Happy January 2013! - Thu Jan 03 2013 07:19 PM

They're all coots. I love coots. Feisty little birds, verging on aquatic bullies - as long as the other bird is smaller, weaker, and easy to confuse. wink

Re: Happy January 2013! - Thu Jan 03 2013 11:22 PM

Lovely bird pictures, bullies or not smile

Silly me went for a walk in the snow today. It wasn't too bad underfoot, but it was cold. Needless to say, there were no kiddies playing on this swing set!

Posted by: Chavs

Re: Happy January 2013! - Fri Jan 04 2013 11:01 AM

I don't envy the cold but it's so pretty.

It's quite mild here at the moment, I even felt the warmth of the sun today; what little there was of it made the dead hydrangea flowers glow.

MotherGoose, yes, looked like snow to me too, that's why I took the photo, jealous of the snow photos in these threads.

The plant is cotoneaster (horizontalis, I think), very common around these parts, and the berries are not edible, Jake, unless you're a bird (in which case they are irresistible) smilee . It's a friend's garden and before Christmas the garden was full of snowberries like snowballs, and these red berries, and looked very striking. By the time I went back with my camera this month, the snowberries were rotting brown and the cotoneaster berries had been fully harvested by hungry birds leaving just the odd one here and there. It wasn't the photo I'd been expecting to take.

More about Cotoneaster: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/gardening/howtogrow/3307039/How-to-grow-Cotoneaster-horizontalis.html

Bet you're sorry you asked now.

Re: Happy January 2013! - Fri Jan 04 2013 07:14 PM

We have Cotoneaster here too but I didn't recognise it from your picture. I'm not very good with plants and am not much of a gardener.

We could do with some cold right now, even though I don't like the cold. We've just had a heatwave, the fiercest one in 80 years. It reached 108 degrees F outside - thank goodness for airconditioning.
Posted by: Copago

Re: Happy January 2013! - Fri Jan 04 2013 11:16 PM

Your heatwave has reached across the country, MG. The official temp here is 47* today but the gague on our verandah has gone over fifty. shocked Our normally pet free house has one very grateful dog laying under the airconditioner.

Some swans taking off.

Re: Happy January 2013! - Sat Jan 05 2013 12:08 AM

lovely photo of the sunlight shining through what looks like a "paper" flower Chavs. And thanks for the id of your plant. We have cotoneasters here too, but the berries are never red - well, at least not the ones that will survive our winters lol. Instead, they are quite a dark purple. Had some along the front of our driveway which made a sort of "fence" (they're good for hedge material as they grow fast and thick) but after 8 years of drought they finally succumbed to blight and we dug them out (but yes, the birds liked them, but then so did a whole bunch of worm type pests who liked the leaves lol). Due to my laptop crash, I've lost all my pictures, but I promise to take some nanking pics this spring and show you how similar they look : )

LOL on coots Flopsy. The ones we have here aren't as colourful as Howie's, but they're particularly funny when they are swimming - "stretching" their short necks out with every paddle. Odd things. Perhaps that's why I like them ~

Lovely swan pic Copago. I've never seen so many in a group. Snow geese? Yup, thousands. Swans, sadly no.

I'd send you all some cold weather, but it hasn't been lower than minus 6 here for several days, so not sure that would help the ridiculous temps you've been having!!

I'm going to have to get out and get some bird photos. I'm feeling left out! laugh Seriously though, great photos of all the birds.

Liz, even though I can't handle cold very well, I've always loved walking in it. All sounds seem muffled and it's so peaceful.

Chavs, lovely hydrangea photo!

Howie, I love getting butterfly photos. I remember once chasing one down for about a half hour trying to get off a decent shot.

I don't think I have a fisheye function, I don't know if that needs an SLR and swap the lens but as it only has pdf style instructions it's been trying something when I need it till now and don't know if it has a wide angle beyond 28mm equivalent or so. I'll look it up now in case.

The first photos for 2013 are now here, I've been saving it up for a longer run than trying to find anything new locally, this is the A20 flyover in Bexley.

Howie, a blue boat! That's an inside joke, but it seems every time we see a boat out of water or for sale, it's almost always blue.

Jill, I hope there wasn't too much property damage due to the fires.

This is the Mission San Xavier del Bac located outside of Tucson, Arizona, built in 1783.

Re: Happy January 2013! - Mon Jan 07 2013 02:29 PM

That's a great building.

We ended up back there yesterday when it had flared up. While all fires are dangerous this was just a grass fire and not a lick on the kinds of fires we're seeing in Tasmania at the moment. This one burnt out a couple thousand acres of grass land .. except for a couple fences there was no other property damage. Here's the sunrise.

This is a pre-1964 sign in Bexley, but as at least four versions exist I don't think they were ever made to a national standard but are all the same now with a bike in the centre instead of the wording.

ClaraSue, I am enjoying your photos of Arizona too. I had a wonderful holiday there in 1984 staying with my husband's relatives who live in Tucson. We hired a car and travelled all over the state. We lived in California at the time and wanted to move because of the crime and violence in our area. I wanted to move to Arizona and my husband wanted to move to Australia, but we would have been happy with either choice. In the end we chose Australia but if we had chosen Arizona, we probably would have settled in Tucson since we have family there.

Re: Happy January 2013! - Wed Jan 09 2013 05:56 PM

Howie, I'm going to show my horrible ignorance...are those goats or sheep?

MadMartha, next time you visit your relatives in Paradise Valley and decide to drive to Tucson, I hope you give me a ring. You'd be within 3 miles of my house on your way there!

MG, every time I see one of Copago's photos, the area reminds me a lot of Arizona, especially where I live. I did an aerial search of her area on Google and the terrain looks very similar. I'm still waiting for my trip to Australia; one of these days I'll make it! laugh

Re: Happy January 2013! - Thu Jan 10 2013 12:16 AM

My guess is goats. Perhaps white kikos. Sheep horns don't grow that way (at least not in the wild in OUR country - and they're usually "docked" if domestic but if left alone would probably be quite "curly"/more circular). I've been wrong on several occasions though lol.
Posted by: Howie72

Re: Happy January 2013! - Thu Jan 10 2013 12:48 AM

Yes, I would go for goats as well
Posted by: Christinap

Re: Happy January 2013! - Thu Jan 10 2013 12:28 PM

I'm going for sheep on Howie's photo, purely because of the coat. They remind me of the Wensleydale (a rare breed sheep here) that has that long almost curly fleece, as do some of our other rare breeds, and they have horns as well.
Posted by: flopsymopsy

Re: Happy January 2013! - Thu Jan 10 2013 03:07 PM

Oh I don't think they're Wensleydales, Wensleys look more like Old English Sheepdogs than sheep. However, Howie's photo reminds me of Wiltshire Horns, the sheep from my home county ooh aarrh, where there be more sheep than people, ooh aaarh (but no one actually talks like that, lol). Although the horn is a tiny bit different and Wiltshire Horns don't usually have quite so many curls - but who knows what they might have done with them in NZ, one hears such tales! wink

Howie, go back and get them to stand up, the only way to tell sheep from goats is the body shape. Or offer one a shoe to eat - if it's a goat, it will eat it. smile

Re: Happy January 2013! - Thu Jan 10 2013 07:09 PM

Actually in this particular case (and heaven knows I usually scream at my laptop when I see water that isn't level) I think it's a better picture left as it is. I just straightened it in Photoshop and it looks just like any other picture taken across water, maybe from a boat, bit of a swell, sunset, old ship... nice pic but not incredible. Sorry Mike.

But as it is now, water tilted alarmingly, and knowing that it was taken by someone snorkeling, it's an action photo. I still want to scream at my laptop but this time I'm screaming "Whoa Mike, that's amazing! Oh heavens I feel seasick!" - whole different effect.

Now, where are my Kwells? wink

These are pretty much like where I lived with my parent/s from 1965-93, otherwise it was a bungalow version first and since 1995 where I am now, and a brick version from 1994-5. They weren't deliberate particularly but ended up being the best places available each time we needed to move.

Re: Happy January 2013! - Wed Jan 16 2013 06:28 PM

If you're ever in a Japanese park, stand by the side of the lake (there's bound to be one) and whistle. Dozens, sometimes hundreds, of koi will rush at you. Better still, buy some fish food (they sell it in the parks), put some in your hand and the fish will take the food from you. Having your finger sucked by a very large koi is decidedly weird!

I've been checking in to see all the great photos even though I haven't been posting. I've been fighting a cold and haven't been taking any photos. I DID take one last week when we had our cold front come through, but I hesitated to post it because it's a sunset (again) taken from home. But it was so spectacular because the sky was golden from horizon to horizon and gave off such an eerie light. I was so busy getting pictures of it that I forgot dinner was on the stove and burnt our chops! laugh

Aww. I thought for a moment you were going to test us with a tricky spot the difference competition... wink laugh

Now, apologies that I haven't got a clearer photo but I've had to take a faraway pic and crop, and the image starts losing definition with every crop, but I think I saw a baby bluetit -- and that seems very odd for January. Any bird experts around to enlighten me?

A spot the "baby" competition...

bigger

more spot the birds: better one of the "baby"

Of course, it could be just an adult fluffing itself up on a freezing cold day, but none of the other bluetits were fluffed up (as you can see by the "parent" in the picture) and the feathers seemed very grey to me.

Anyone know?

Posted by: ren33

Re: Happy January 2013! - Sat Jan 19 2013 05:26 PM

Well, if that's an adult he needs to go on a diet, he doesn't seem to have fluffed up at all. if I knew about birds I'd say he was a baby.
Posted by: Chavs

Re: Happy January 2013! - Sat Jan 19 2013 06:02 PM

The bird higher up the branch is an adult - yes, looking a little tubby now you mention it but less so in the second picture - but the one further down is fluffy.

Chavs, does look like a baby I agree. Perhaps the parents got fooled by the fairly warm weather we had for the time of year into thinking it was Spring and had a rather foolish early brood.

That's what I was wondering too, Christina. As the fluffy bird has all its colouring, it can't be all that new, and I am now wondering if it's an unusual case of the fledgeling feathers simply not falling out as they should have. Or maybe it's not unusual at all and I am only noticing it for the first time.

Here's an accidental photo that I think turned out quite well... I was in the surf at Cape Conran (eastern Victoria) trying to simultaneously ride waves (boogey board not surf board!) and take photos of my sons doing the same. Very many distorted photos of sand, sky and swirling water but a few turned out. I like the partially obscured view of the beach ahead.

This is to counteract the feeling of cold pervading this thread! By the way I wish we could transfer about 10-15C of heat to the northern hemisphere - I'm sure all would be happy!

Re: Happy January 2013! - Tue Jan 22 2013 05:18 PM

Ren - yes, she and her passenger were both fine - no injuries at all. She promptly phoned us as she wasn't far from home and Maynooth went out to see if the kangaroo needed to be put out of its misery. It did seem injured at first but when Maynooth went to investigate, it charged him, then bounded off into the bush. Maynooth fell over backwards and put his back out. So Maynooth, who wasn't even in the original accident, was the only human casualty. He is currently having physiotherapy for his back every three days.

Great variety of pics on this page! All a joy to see (but sorry about the accident, MotherGoose).

Satguru, I keep meaning to add a couple of photos I've taken of road/path signs because they reminded me of ones you had posted. Maybe tomorrow I will search them out. I have a pedestrian one to walk beside that bike.

For now, because I don't have any snow, some ice from the top of the birdbath this morning:

The ice-crystals growing from the top right are a flat sheet with air bubbles, developing like fir trees at the edge, and from the bottom left the ice has grown as shards, and then met and melded with the fir tree development. I think.

Ren, that's lovely. smile

Meet Archie (short for Archimedes) and Merlin, my two new weiros or cockatiels, depending upon where you live.

They got their names from one of my favourite children's stories/movies - "The Sword in the Stone" (Disney version). Archimedes was the name of Merlin's owl. It was coolcat90's idea.

Those snow photos are making me nostalgic for the wonderful 3 years we spent in Canada!

Here's another photo (more in focus this time) of a Rainbow Lorikeet. As ClaraSue has experienced, these birds will eat from your hand. The colours are just so vivid.

Wow Satguru, that looks like some storm about to hit.

Love those Lorikeets Mike, they are really so pretty.

Fantastic photo Chris! It seems those eyes are boring right into you.

Thanks Mike. I think hawks have those sort of eyes. All of them seem to have that disconcerting stare when they look at you. Probably trying to work out if we're food or not.

Lol, my thoughts exactly! Beautiful birds, the lorikeet and hawk.

This is Penelope Witchepoo. She was given to me by my grandmother when I was a little girl. I was so offended because my sister got a Raggedy Ann and I just knew Grandmother hated me to give me such an ugly doll. Now she's a treasured part of my childhood and has a place of honor among my doll collection.

smile She's got loads of character! (Raggedy-Ann..pfft..that's for sissys.)

The first snowdrop appeared...

The photo is a bit fuzzy to highlight the persil-whiteness and not because I took it on the wrong setting, no sirree...

Beautiful Chavs, I love snowdrops. They make you believe Spring will come. I noticed this morning mine are breaking ground so hopefully will be photographable in a couple of days (weather permitting)

A view of Llanciach Fawr Manor in South Wales, unfortunately we were not allowed to take photos inside. The guides were dressed up as they would have been centuries ago and spoke as they would have back then.

It was a few minutes of hail and then just standard rain, the clouds seem to go blackest for hail, presumably as the ice absorbs more light than vapour.

Another country lane also in Keston

The other night hubby and I went to Alice Cooperstown, a sports bar/restaurant owned by rocker Alice Cooper in downtown Phoenix. The place features rock-n-roll and baseball memorabilia as well as having pretty good food. The name Cooperstown is a play on the word Cooperstown, New York where the National Baseball Hall of Fame is located. This display was across from our table and I thought of Ren, of course. grin

This is the same street that was having the snow ploughed off it a couple of days ago, after a day of warmth and rain. Photo taken around 4 this afternoon.

Christina, do we have the same snowdrop? smile

(Types @ http://www.bsbi.org.uk/Snowdrop_identification.pdf )

Mine is the common-as-muck normal variety laugh ergo the best wink.

The flower opened up on Tuesday but closed again pretty sharpish - too much rain and wind. They'd be handy little weathermen if it wasn't for the fact that to see them you have to stand in the weather so you already know it.

I know we are only supposed to post photos we have taken ourselves, but Maynooth took this one and asked me to post it especially for Ren.

This little blue (w)Ren was parked outside his office today!

awww.How suitable. Just right for Moi I think. Maynooth can post as many pictures that he has taken any time, Carole. We don't choose who posts! The only thing is one a day!
Great pic btw!

I think we do have the same sort of snowdrop Chavs - just the good old common or garden variety. I think they are the prettiest though. Just a nice simple old fashioned flower.

Still on the subject about childhood toys, this antique sugar bin (stands 12 inches tall) was my dad and his brother's toy box when they were children. I use it now to hold my needlework.
