Great shot! Beautiful blossoms!

The local grocery store has acknowledged the return of the sunshine, and the arrival of spring by setting up a barbecue condiments display. I was amused to see barbecue sauce done up to look like Canadian Club rye whiskey!

Yes it is lovely and I really do appreciate it when I get a chance to look out of the window. It was a totally different scene a few weeks ago when the sky was overcast as you can see in this picture. (Sorry about the reflection)

Re: It MAY get sunnier - Tue May 14 2013 09:26 PM

The wisteria is lovely!

We have a very active Dragon Boat club here, with a recreational group and a competitive section. The latter sent teams to Singapore a few years ago. I had a go with the recreational group several times a couple of years ago, but as I don't swim (at least not very well) I was never really comfortable. I'll stick to watching smile

I was surprised this morning when my bus took an unexpected detour. Turns out that this bridge, built in 1930, is "sick" and the buses aren't allowed to go over it until it is "better". It's safe for cars, but not big trucks and buses, and my driver said it might be a couple of years before it is!

Re: It MAY get sunnier - Mon May 20 2013 02:53 PM

I think Gandalf the Grey is a greyt name : ) He looks very wise and regal for a 4 month old kitten!

You should go with your first instinct about the personality of your new owner.

Had fun though, trying to think up other possible options for a smokey grey male ...
Ashby
Dorian
Earl
Grayson
Malkin
Nickels
Stoke
Hickory
Shadow/Moonshadow
Pewter (Mewter? lol)
Rafiki (that wise grey guy in Lion King)
Slate/Slater
Sterling
Aluminium (Lou for short? lol)
Cinder
Pumpernickel

He's going to be a beauty, no matter what he lets you name him : )

Re: It MAY get sunnier - Tue May 21 2013 04:21 AM

Smokey Gandalf (or whatever name he may be smile ) is a very pretty cat!

Remember, though, that whatever you call your cat probably won't be the real name. Because cats have their own names...hope it's okay to recite the TS Eliot poem here:

http://famouspoetsandpoems.com/poets/t__s__eliot/poems/15121

The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there's the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey--
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter--
But all of them sensible everyday names.
But I tell you, a cat needs a name that's particular,
A name that's peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum-
Names that never belong to more than one cat.
But above and beyond there's still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover--
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular Name.

David: that's a STUNNING yard. Mine has never looked THAT good. Loving the contrasting/complimentary colours.

Chavs: that's kinda what I was going for with the "whatever he allows you to name him" comment. Excellent quote! And here's one that might tie this thread with another forum you were in regarding patience:

"As anyone who has ever been around a cat for any length of time well knows, cats have enormous patience with the limitations of the human kind".
~Cleveland Amory

I've actually taken some photos in the last week, but I can't find my favourite photo editing program disk (2 hard drive deaths within the past year, so have had to reinstall EVERYthing). I'm beginning to suspect that the disk is trapped in my old tower disk drive (which I can't easily open, because it won't start up lol) but will get to it eventually. Judging by my fruit trees/perennials it "could" be finally spring here (but don't want to jinx it by saying so lol).

A couple of baby birds in the nest, but one says it's hungry now!

Wow - what a photo!! Amazing.

I have two fox cubs. One is camera shy. Here's the other.

I think Cleveland Amory may have had kinder cats than the one we had, who never hid his disdain.

Hampstead Garden Suburb is literally that. Besides the houses all being architect designed the gardens are governed by covenant to keep hedges and not pave them over without special permission. There is an active horticultural society with regular competitions and besides the money being available for professional gardeners (the cheapest house would now set you back half a million) it is something many residents work very hard to maintain the standard.

Round the corner, the entrance to Bigwood (there is a Little Wood next to it which also has an open air theatre).

ClaraSue - cool picture! Do you know what bird species it is? (I have to admit, at first glance I thought it was a pitcher plant - giggles)

Another nice photo David. Those trees are so BIG!

Oh my, Chavs. How adorable. Look at his/her bluish eyes - must be very very young! Fabulous pic!

Re: It MAY get sunnier - Fri May 24 2013 12:57 AM

Great photos. Apologies for my absence of late but it was great to catch up.

Chavs - when you say you have fox cubs .. are they domestic?? I found a very tiny one once and wanted to keep it but wasn't allowed by the other half smile

Satguru .. great garden pic. So vibrant.

And great photos every one else .. it makes me want to get my camera out and see what I can find.

Re: It MAY get sunnier - Fri May 24 2013 01:11 AM

I found a recent pic. This is a bracelet I've had for a couple of years and possibly the only piece of 'real' jewellery I own. I took a photo to send to the woman who made it to have a matching necklace done. smile

Very fashionable at the moment Jill.

Re: It MAY get sunnier - Fri May 24 2013 07:31 AM

Very cool bracelet Jill. I have been messing around with making jewelry pieces and I'd like to try a hand at making something like that.

I think the baby bird is a common house sparrow.

I've never posted a photo of our rig. I think Satguru is the only one that has seen it before. This Bradley Tank is typically what we haul for the military. It's actually quite large; for some reason it looks tiny in this pic.

Re: It MAY get sunnier - Fri May 24 2013 04:21 PM

That's impressive! I assume you can sleep in it and that sort of thing. With something like the tank on behind you just how long is it?

Re: It MAY get sunnier - Fri May 24 2013 04:25 PM

General view of the garden looking reasonably tidy

Posted by: ClaraSue

Re: It MAY get sunnier - Fri May 24 2013 05:21 PM

And a nice, peaceful garden, too! laugh

The length of the truck and trailer from nose to tail is 85 feet long. The sleeper on the truck is set up like a motorhome: shower, bed, dinette, sink, bathroom and lots of closet space. grin The truck itself is 37 feet long.

And here's the old lady, Twiggy (she's nearly 18) - who's showing moderate excitement about the new feline addition to these pages! She thinks 'Lord Greystoke' would be a fine name, appropriate for such a noble looking puss (to be abbreviated to 'His Lordship' on less formal occasions). I did catch her as she was relaxing after a hard night's.... ummm sleeping...

Re: It MAY get sunnier - Fri May 24 2013 06:19 PM

I didn't realise you hadn't posted the truck before ClaraSue, I feel honoured!

Here's a new picture representing my past. Back in those days this would have been a Routemaster, but this was my local 102 bus from Golders Green to Chingford (now Brent Cross to Edmonton but I was 16 when Brent Cross was built and got my own two wheeled transport), stopping at the stop for my primary school (which I walked to). But I passed it every school day from 1969 to 1976 and one of my best friends (and a few others) lived literally round the corner out of shot.

Ahh.. smile.. but your other half was probably correct. No, they aren't pets, just a bit of suburban wildlife. Pests probably! They have spent the last couple of days killing a scrubbing brush and a dishcloth - it's going to get nasty eventually.

But for now, they are cute.

Darling fox cub. I'd be very tempted to keep them fed.

St Anne's Lagoon, a 40 hectare reserve near Cheviot in North Canterbury. At times some interesting birdlife but this time I only saw mallards, canadian geese and black swans though was not there for long.

At sunrise this morning the moon was getting close to setting. Times like this, I wish I had a better camera. Close-ups are just not any good with it.

Clara Sue - that's just perfect as it is. The photo makes me want to be there. I'd love to be able to take a photo of the moon like that photo.

Howie, that's a very unusual tree, to me anyway. Is it supposed to look like that? Lovely picture.

After leaving St Anne's Lagoon and travelling over the Hundalees, we came across Goose Bay....this is looking back south. To the left is the Pacific Ocean and to the right (out of sight) is State Highway One and the start (or end) of the Hundalees.

This is the M107 175MM Self-Propelled Howitzer. It could be fired out to a range of nearly 33 KM. It was used to provide long-range fires during the Vietnam war. The large spade at the rear helped absorb and direct the tremendous recoil.

I bought this gardenia plant in the pound shop months ago and all the buds fell off. It has now produced a flower, somewhat distorted but a flower. With no sense of smell I can't smell it, more is the pity.

The baby starlings are quite cute. It takes them a few weeks to develop the shiny feathers that the adults have, so it's quite easy to pick them out for a while.
