Heineken Cup 2012-2013This is the fourth go around for the tournament, having been started in the 2008-2009. Current Podium : 1st N-Bomb 2nd srini701 3rd gtho4 Paper_aero was beaten at this competition for the first time last year as he had conqured the first two fields of tippers. Srini repeated for the third time as Silver medalist and gtho took his 2nd Bronze medal in a row. You don't need to know anything about European rugby to play, just be prepared to take out your dartboard and let luck take over. ----------- The fixtures will be found in separate threads with the 8th and final round being split into two threads. In rugby it is possible for a match to end in a draw but it is not very common. Deadline for the first round is Midnight October 11th --- Any late tips will score default which in this competition is the lowest score by an active tipster. ----------- Scoring 1 points will be scored for each correct tip; A further 1 points will be scored if the result is picked by just one or two tipsters; 1 bonus point will be scored if a tipster is in the Hall of Fame the current week and the week before. Count back to break ties will be HoF minus spoons.

I am the best proof for that...3 podium finishes in 3 years and I still have NO clue what this game is, or how it is different from the other rugbies... I am in again...

We start this year with 12 tippers, 2 more than last year welcome to the competition doomed and wwe84.
New to the tournament since last year are the Toulon, who return after missing a year, Zebre, the Sale Sharks and the Exeter Chiefs. While Aironi, the London Irish, Bath and Gloucester who were in the last tournament but do not return for this one.
We managed to get through the first week without a tie and it was a good round for England, France and Ireland who all finished with winning records. Wales had a tough start and both Scotland and Italy were left winless this week. Two time defending champion Leinster Rugby won a tight one 9-6 over new to the tournament Exeter Chiefs. Only two teams won on the road, the Saraceans beat Edinburgh and Connacht Rugby beat Zebre away from home.
Sypher and paper_aero were a perfect 12 for 12, which had only been done by Howie before this week, and earned the HoFs, as well as a bonus point for being the only ones to pick the Racing Metro win over Munster Rugby. N-Bomb did not get off to a good start defending his title from last year as he took the spoon with a 4.

It looks like we may have finally figured out how to tip this tournament. While we have done OK in the past, we are having our best start by far as we tipped the highest percentage ever this week with an 84.7 correct rate.
The French were the story this week, winning 6 of their 7 matches, with Racing Metro 92's loss to the Saracens being their only blemish, the Irish also only had one loss when the Harlequins went to Connacht and took the victory, England was an even 3-3, while Wales, Italy and Scotland were winless this week.
Castres jumped out to an early 10-0 lead and held off Northampton for a 21-16 win. Powerhouse Tolouse had a tough time with Benetton Treviso, as they were down 18-9 at the half and 21-12 at the 53rd minute mark, at which point they scored 3 conversion and tries in the next 10 minutes to secure a 33-21 victory. Toulouse had one player get both a yellow and red card, another player receive a yellow card, while a Benetton player also got a yellow card in this rough and tumble match. Leinster joined fellow Irish squad Ulster, who topped Glasgow this week, in earning a road win, as they went up 14-0 and held on for a 20-13 win over the host Scarlets. 3 of the first 4 road victories were earned by Irish teams as Connacht got 1 of 2 road wins last week. The Saracens worked over Racing Metro 92, they gave up the first 3 points of the game, then scored the next 23 and cruised to a 30-13 win. Biarritz was all over Zebre 38-17. Connacht used 4 early penalty goals to take a 19-9 lead, but at that point the Harlequins took over scoring 21 of the next 24 points in the game for a 30-22 triumph, which was sparked by 2 tries by Danny Care. The Exeter Chiefs took a 12-10 half time lead before Clermont Auvergne imposed their will and scored the next 34 points, shutting out the Chiefs the rest of the way for a 44-12 victory. Munster smothered last year’s semi-finalists Edinburgh 33-00. Toulon took the lead 1 minute into the second half against the Cardiff Blues and finished with a 22-14 win at Cardiff. The Leicester Tigers gave their fans an early scare when they went down 10-0 to the Ospreys, but as Tigers are apt to do, they roared back for a 39-22 triumph. The Tigers took their first lead in the second half at 16-13, and after they were tied at 19 they scored 20 of the last 23 points in the match. Montpellier defended their home stadium with a 33-18 win over the Sale Sharks, this match was 12-11 in Montpelliers favor early in the second half before they pulled away for a 33-18 victory.
Paper_aero makes it an impressive back to back perfect 12/12 for this week’s HoF and he is joined by Howie72 who was also perfect this week. Ozzz2002 took the spoon with 7 correct. Paper_aero got a bonus point for back to back HoFs and took the overall lead from Sypher by 2 points, as Sypher's only miss this tournament was the last match of the week between Montpellier and the Sale Sharks.

We didn't make triple digits this week, but are well above any historic lows as a group. The remaining undefeated teams are Toulouse, the Harlequins, Ulster, ASM Clermont Auvergne and Toulon.
I don't know if the impressive work by the teams from France and Ireland or the fact the teams from Scotland, Italy & Wales only have 1 victory between them is the bigger story at the half way point of group play. The English squads are just above the .500 mark so far and could certainly spoil the top two countries party.
With all the points in the match coming from penalty goals Castres were able to squeak by Glasgow for a road win 9-6. Connacht received a couple of yellow cards but were able to control their match with Biarritz for a 22-14 win. Toulon went on the road to Northampton and took a 13-6 halftime lead that they converted into a 25-6 win. The Chiefs surprised the Scarlets by opening with a try and conversion and never looking back on their way to a 22-16 win away from home. The Ospreys pulled within 5 of Toulouse at the midway point but couldn't get any closer as Toulouse took the 30-14 win. The Harlequins went into Zebre and thrashed the home team, scoring the first 17 points and cruising to a 57-14 victory. Toulon scored the only try in their win over Sale 17-6. Munster out penalty goaled the Saraceans 15-9. The final game of the day on Saturday was also low scoring, but Racing Metro 92 managed 2 tries in their 19-9 win over Edinburgh. There were 10 penalties, with a Montpellier try and Cardiff red card mixed in, during the first 38 minutes of the match and Montpellier was only up by 3 at the 72nd minute, but pulled away in the end for a 35-24 road victory. Benetton Treviso tried to get Italy its first win this competition by scoring the last 11 points in the match against Leicester, but those points only changed the 33-14 hole to a 33-25 loss. With the French & Irish squads dominating early in the tournament this year it was fitting for this week to end with powerhouses from both sides meeting up in a battle for first place in Group 5 and it was also fitting that this match was defensive with both ASM Clermont Auvergne & Leinster converting 4 penalty scores, and home squad ASM adding a drop goal for a 3 point margin of victory 15-12.
George95 and srini take the HoFs this week, both missing one game each and ozzz has made it 2 spoons in a row with a 4 this week.

We slid slightly backwards again in our total correct, but that was mostly due to the Osprey's upset of Toulouse, which earned wwe a bonus point and the Northampton upset of Ulster, which earned ozzz a bonus point.
This week was all about England and France, with both teams only taking one loss this week and hoarding 11 of the 12 victories to themselves. The only other win was by the Welsh based Osprey's and Ireland who have looked strong all year couldn't muster a win this week.
Game by game analysis will return for Round 5.
Gtho4, illiniman and N-Bomb take the HoFs with 10 right as all 3 only missed the 2 games that coincidentaly led to bonus points for the 2 spoon takers of the week, ozzz and wwe, who both had 4 right. | |

We were denied a record setting percentage correct by the first tie of the season, it was amazing it took this long into the tournament to get our first one of these. We did still tip over 80% correct and had 7 of our 10 tippers tip for double digits.
Things were as they have been for the majority of this tournament, France went 5-2, Ireland 3-1, England was 3-1-2, the only non-loss for the Welsh, Italian & Scottish teams was the Welsh based Ospreys getting a tie.
In an all penalty kick defensive battle Northampton took a bite out of Castres chances to move into the Quarter-Finals and gave themselves a chance to possibly move on. Montpellier went into Sale and taught them a lesson, not allowing Sale to score after the 36th minute and getting a hearty 27-6 win. Ulster overpowered Glasgow 23-6. The Harlequins continued their winning ways running all over Connacht, who received 3 yellow cards during the game, 47-8. Cardiff scored the first 8 and the last 17 points of their match against Toulon, but unfortunately for them Toulon scored 45 points in between that for a safe 45-25 win. The end of this tournament can't get here soon enough for Zebre who took a home loss to Biarritz 32-6. The Saracens took control of Group 1 with a rough and tumble road win, which was powered by 10 penalty scores, over Racing Metro 37-28, as both teams had two players each receive yellow cards. Clermont Auvergne let Exeter know whose house the game was played in with a smothering 46-3 trouncing. Two time defending Champion Leinster returned to form following back to back defeats at the hands of Clermont Auvergne and kept their Quarter-Final hopes very alive with a 33-14 win over the Scarlets. Munster kept the Scottish teams winless this tournament by taking a 26-3 lead and then putting it on cruise control for a 26-17 win. Leicester came back from a 10-0 deficit to take a 15-10 lead, only to give that up in the 75th minute barely holding on for the first tie of the tournament against the Ospreys 15-15. Benetton Treviso was valiant again, going into halftime tied at 14, but Toulouse was the better side taking the 35-14 win.
Next week is the last round of group play before the Quarter-Finals. The Harlequins and Clermont Auvergne are locks to move on, the Saracens just have to get past winless Edinburgh to move on, Ulster and Toulon have tough matches but are still fairly solid to move on. Toulouse and Leicester will play to see who wins Group 2 in Leicester, and the loser will have other teams move past them for a runner up spot. Montpellier is in position for one of the runner-up spots, with Leinster and Munster tied for the edge to get the other spot.
Sypher & Howie take the HoFs with 11 correct and ozzz & wwe share another spoon. Sypher takes over the overall lead from paper_aero by 1.

As a group we hit triple digits and just a bit more than 3 out of 4 correct.
The Scots got a win from Glasgow, the Italians also got their first win as Benetton came back to grab a victory and the Welsh also got one win this weekend. The Irish were a perfect 4-0. The English were an even 3-3 this weekend, while the French stumbled and were 2-5. That makes 3 French, 3 English and 2 Irish teams moving on to the Quarter-Finals.
The final non-group winner Quarter-Final position came down to two Irish squads, two time defending champion Leinster and Munster. The teams were even in points, the first non-group winner tie breaker, and Munster had one more try going in, the second non-group winner tie breaker. They both did their jobs and won while also scoring a bonus point, but Munster not only held their lead in tries, but added one more for a cushion, grabbing that final Quarter-Final position and ending the two year reign of Leinster.
The Harlequins were a try better than Biarritz to finish group play with a perfect 6-0 record with a 16-9 win. Connacht used a couple of drop goals to leave Zebre winless 25-20. Castres missed a conversion and lost to Ulster 9-8. Glasgow scored in the 80th minute to defeat Northampton and get the Scottish teams their only win of the tournament 27-20. Cardiff used their lucky Halfpenny to climb out of the cellar of group 6 with a 26-14 victory over Sale, much I think to wwe's dismay. Toulon didn't put their best foot forward, having already guaranteed themselves a Quarter-Final position, against Montpelliler, who needed the win to make the Quarter-Finals, and were beaten 23-3 and took Group 6 by a point. Leinster came back from down 17-12 to beat Exeter 29-20 and keep their hopes of the Quarter-Finals intact. Clermont Auvergne abused the Scarlets, scoring 24 first half points and cruising to a 29-0 victory to remain unbeaten in group play, and tied with the Harlequins for most points of any team with 28. Five minutes into the match Racing Metro's Antoine Battut received a red card for knee to head, which gave Munster the added advantage it needed to get a win, bonus point and score five tries to squeak into the final Quarter-Final position 29-6. The Saracens cruised into the next round bulldozering Edinburgh 40-7. Much like Glasgow the day before Benetton Treviso scored very late in the match, the 79th minute, to grab a victory over the Ospreys 17-14, after being down 14-3 at the 73rd minute mark. The winner of group 2 was decided by the last game of the group stage as Leicester hosted Toulouse and the Tigers came out the victor in a defensive 9-5 match moving onto the next stage and sending Toulouse home until next year.
Next round isn't until April.
Gtho4 was perfect in taking the HoF, while wwe84 took the spoon with 6 correct. Illiniman84 and gtho4 added a bonus point to their totals for the Glasgow win over Northampton. The perfect week and bonus point propel gtho4 to the top of the leaderboard.

We correctly predicted 61 of our 80 Quarter-Finalists advance picks for an over 75% mark there.
The first 2 matches pitted Irish and English squads, with the Irish squads playing on the road, though some Harlequins executives think it felt like a road game with Munster fans swooping up online tickets from Harlequins fans, and the next 2 were an all French match-up and an English and French battle.
After going down 9-3 ASM Clermont Auvergne came back to take a 15-9 halftime lead, eventually scoring 33 straight points which included 5 tries and that was enough to bury Montpellier by a score of 36-14 and move onto the next round. Ulster was no match for the Saracens, they tied the score at 6-6 but 21 of the next 24 points were scored by the Saracens giving them a 27-9 lead that led to a 27-16 victory. The Harlequins took a 9-6 halftime lead, but Munster scored 4 penalty goals in the first 16 minutes of the 2nd half and their defense did the rest only giving up 3 more points and leading to the only road victory of this round 18-12. Leicester surprised Toulon early and took a 9-6 halftime lead, but penalty goals at the 43, 46, 59 & 64 minute marks flipped the script to a 18-12 lead and ended with a Toulon win 21-15.
Gtho, Howie & N-Bomb only missed Munster with their advanced picks, while wwe only had 4 advance picks correct, but he added a bonus point for being the only one to hit with Munster. The rest of us missed Munster and Montpellier. Illiniman missed the advance picks so I am gave him, and doomed who seems to be inactive, 4 default points for the advance picks and illiniman received points his correct picks.
Gtho4 & Howie share the HoF with 10 this week and wwe took the as the lowest score to make all picks this week.
