Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Yankee Stadium is in The Bronx, New York. It is on the intersection of 161st Street and which Avenue?

Answer: River Avenue

If you go by Subway, take the #4 to 161st St/Yankee Stadium. The station is right by the Stadium. The trip from central Manhattan takes less than 20 minutes.
2. When did Yankee Stadium open for business?

Answer: April 18, 1923

On February 6, 1921, the Yankees announced that they had purchased ten acres of land in the Bronx, on which they planned to build a new stadium. Prior to that they had been sharing the Polo Grounds, across the river, with the NL team New York Giants.

The new stadium hosted the World Series in its first year of existence, with the Yankees beating the Giants.
3. Yankee Stadium is commonly referred to as 'The House that ______ built.'

Answer: Ruth

The Yankees had purchased Babe Ruth from the Boston Red Sox only one year earlier. His popularity pulled so many fans to home games that the Yankees were able to spend $675,000 on buying the land, and another $2.5 million in building the stadium.
4. Who played in the first game at Yankee Stadium?

Answer: New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox

The inaugural game was held against Babe Ruth's old team. The attendance was 74,200. Babe Ruth hit a three-run homer in the third inning, on the way to a 4-1 Yankee win.
5. The stadium was relatively unchanged from its opening day until the 1960s. In 1946, electric lights were added to allow for night games. In 1959 another major feature was changed. What was it?

Answer: first electronic scoreboard

There were always three tiers of seats, although initially they were not as extensive as they are now. The exterior was changed to white (from brown) in the 1966-67 revamp, the same time that the seat colors were changed.
6. At the end of the 1973 season, the Yankees moved out of their stadium, and went temporarily to Shea Stadium. During this time, Yankee Stadium was revamped and improved. What changes were made?

Answer: all of these improvements were made

The original field had a slope in the outfield running up towards the bleachers. By lowering this, and cantilevering the upper decks, sight lines for fans were improved. The famous facade of the stadium was lost forever, though it was remembered in the replica (the instantly recognisable white arches) along the rear of the park.
7. Which of these sports has also been played at Yankee Stadium?

Answer: they have both taken place here

Yankee Stadium was shared with the New York football Giants from 1956 to 1973. It was also the site of many famous boxing bouts. Boxers such as Benny Leonard, Mohammed Ali, and Joe Louis have all fought there over the years.
8. Pope John Paul II was the first Pope to celebrate Mass in a US ballpark.

Answer: False

Pope Paul VI said Mass here in 1965, on the first visit by a Pope to the US. In 1979, Pope John Paul II also visited the stadium to celebrate Mass.
9. Outside Yankee Stadium there is a 120 foot high baseball bat, painted with Babe Ruth's signature and the famous 'Louisville Slugger' logo. What is its purpose?

Answer: boiler vent

The Bat is visible from the nearby Major Deegan Expressway, and from the trains that carry commuters into Manhattan.
10. What is situated behind the bullpens, just off left field, in Monument Park?

Answer: Retired numbers, monuments to former players, and monuments to other people

There is a walkway, bordered by the numbers that have been retired in honor of players (and others who have played major roles in Yankee history). There are also the plaques in honor of players, managers, and announcers of the past. After 9/11 the Yankees unveiled a plaque in memory of those who died in the September 11th attacks.
