Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who were the first living children of Mother Earth, according to "D'Aulaire's Book of Greek Myths"?

Answer: The Titans

Uranus, also known as the sky and the heavens, came down to Mother Earth, who was known at the time as Gaea, and they gave birth to the first living beings, the Titans. There were six of them.
2. Which God did not sit upon a throne on Mt. Olympus, according to "D'Aulaire's Book of Greek Myths"?

Answer: Hades

Hades enjoyed his realm of the underworld and resided in his palace. It is debated whether or not he ever even visited Olympus. Hestia, a goddess, gave up her throne for Dionysus and tended the hearth.
3. Which Greek God/Goddess had no mother or father, according to "D'Aulaire's Book of Greek Myths"?

Answer: Aphrodite

Aphrodite supposedly rose out of the sea but no one knows for sure where she came from. She was the goddess of love. In some versions, Aphrodite is seen as either the daughter of Zeus or Cronus. When Zeus dethroned his father, Cronus, he castrated him and flung the "castrated part" into the ocean. This "castrated part" gave birth to Aphrodite. However, no one knows for sure.
4. When Pandora opened the jar that she was instructed not to open, a swarm of miseries escaped. She shut the lid before one entity escaped. What was its name?

Answer: Hope

Greed, Vanity, Slander, and Envy, to name a few, escaped and plagued mankind. Hope, however, was preserved, which still gave mankind a fighting chance against the temptations of "evil".
5. Zeus had many wives and mistresses and his first wife, Hera, was very jealous. When she almost caught him with Io, what did Zeus change Io into to protect her from death?

Answer: A cow

Unfortunately for Io, Zeus was too afraid of his wife to change her back, as Hera suspected that her husband was being adulterous. She placed Io in the custody of the giant Argus, who had 100 eyes on his body so he could watch her at all times. Hermes lulled Argus into an eternal sleep at a later date and Io escaped, only to be pursued by a gadfly.

Argus's eyes were placed on a peacock, Hera's favorite bird. Io was eventually changed back into human form.
6. Who was Narcissus in love with, according to "D'Aulaire's Book of Greek Myths"?

Answer: Himself

Narcissus was a man that was so vain that he fell in love with his own reflection in a stream of water. He stared lovingly at himself until he died of hunger and thirst. This is how the term "narcissism" came to be. Echo was a nymph that loved him but could only repeat what others said.

This was a punishment bestowed on her by Hera. When Narcissus said, "I love you" to his own reflection, Echo repeated it and can still be heard doing so in canyons today.
7. Heracles killed the Gorgon, Medusa.

Answer: False

Perseus was actually the man that killed Medusa and used her head to turn another monster to stone. This was the plot of the movie, "Clash of the Titans".
8. What was the name of the guard dog that watched over the gate to the underworld?

Answer: Cerberus

Cerberus was a three-headed watchdog that kept souls from escaping from the realm of Hades. Heracles had to capture it as one of his twelve tasks assigned to him by Hera.
9. On the island of Crete, there was a monster that lived in the labyrinths under the king's palace. What was the name of this creature?

Answer: The Minotaur

The Minotaur was half man and half bull. Many men were sacrificed to it until Theseus finally ended its reign of terror.
10. Who was on a quest to capture the "Golden Fleece"?

Answer: Jason

Jason and his band of warriors called the Argonauts survived many scary episodes to eventually capture the "Golden Fleece".
