Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Name the person who killed Professor James Moriarty.

Answer: Sherlock Holmes

An easy one to start with. In "The Adventure of The Final Problem", Holmes used baritsu to throw Moriarty to his death in the Reichenbach Falls.
2. Who killed Bartholomew Sholto?

Answer: Tonga

Tonga was the Andaman Islander associate of Jonathan Small, who Holmes and Watson shot in "The Sign of Four".
3. Which organisation was responsible for the deaths of Elias, Joseph & John Openshaw?

Answer: The Ku Klux Klan

This was in "The Adventure of the Five Orange Pips". The Scowrers were in "The Valley of Fear".
4. Name the killer of the Honorable Ronald Adair.

Answer: Colonel Sebastian Moran

In "The Adventure of the Empty House", the old associate of Moriarty used "the famous air-gun of Von Herder" to kill Adair, and even fired it through the window of Baker Street.
5. Which of these animals was poisoned and killed?

Answer: Mrs Hudson's terrier

In "The Sussex Vampire", Robert Ferguson's son, Jack, did poison their spaniel, Carlo, but it survived. In "A Study in Scarlet", Holmes poisoned and killed "the landlady's terrier", to test a theory. (It was, to be fair, ill). In "The Adventure of The Copper Beeches", the mastiff, also called Carlo, had his brains shot out by Dr Watson.

In "Silver Blaze", the horse of the same name killed its trainer, John Straker.
6. Select the name of the killer of Cadogan West.

Answer: Hugo Oberstein

From "The Adventure of The Bruce-Partington Plans". Sir James Walter died after discovering that his brother, Col. Valentine Walter, had sold government secrets to Hugo Oberstein. Walter helped dispose of the body in an intriguing manner, but did not murder West. Oberstein did this with a blow to the head. Eduardo Lucas was a foreign agent from a different story, "The Adventure of The Second Stain".
7. Who killed Mr Charles McCarthy?

Answer: Mr John Turner

In "The Boscombe Valley Mystery", it certainly seemed black against James McCarthy, the murdered man's son. Holmes, however, managed to extract a confession from John Turner, which he kept a secret, after securing young James' release. It is thought that he and Miss Turner later married, and never discovered the truth of their fathers' histories. That is, unless they read "The Strand" magazine!
8. Name the person who killed Mrs (Neil) Gibson.

Answer: Mrs Gibson

In "The Problem of Thor Bridge", the wronged wife of Neil Gibson, the Gold King and ex-American senator, devised an ingenious method of suicide.
9. What killed Fitzroy McPherson?

Answer: Cyanea Capillata

"The Adventure of the Lion's Mane" occurred after Holmes had retired to keep bees. Radix pedis diaboli gives it's name to "The Adventure of the Devil's Foot".
10. Finally, name the villian who killed Julia Stoner.

Answer: Dr Grimesby Roylott

From one of the best, and most famous of Holmes' cases, "The Adventure of the Speckled Band", Dr Roylott used a swamp adder to kill Julia Stoner. Her twin sister, Helen, would have met the same fate, but for the intervention of Holmes & Watson - in a very vivid story.
Joseph Stangerson is from "A Study in Scarlet".
