Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Valley

Answer: cwm

The word cwm is Welsh but is well known in English as well. It refers to a valley formed by glaciation in mountainous regions. The tune for the Welsh hymn 'Guide Me Oh Thou Great Redeemer' is called Cwm Rhondda after the valley of that name in south Wales.
2. Non committal or unsure

Answer: hmm

Hmmm is the sound made by somebody who is playing for time or isn't sure what answer to give. It is often heard as 'um', which is also valid in Scrabble. Try as we might to avoid it, I'm sure most of us have resorted to hmmm or um rather than leave an awkward silence when talking to somebody.
3. A musical instrument

Answer: crwth

Another useful Welsh word which is allowable in Scrabble, a crwth is a musical instrument which looks a bit like a violin or lyre. It pre-dates Scrabble by some distance, being recorded as far back as the late eighteenth century.
4. Feeling cold

Answer: brrr

Both brr and brrr are valid spellings of this word which is the noise produced when we are feeling chilly. The derivation is usually given as being related to shivering with cold, with it reflecting the sound made by chattering teeth.
5. An indefinite number

Answer: nth

This is a mathematical expression used to describe an indefinite number. It has been adopted into everyday usage to mean the same thing, usually used as an adjective. For example, you could say that learning the words in this quiz will help your Scrabble games to the nth degree.
6. Disapproval

Answer: tsk

If you are annoyed with somebody, you might tut or say something that sounds like tsk to express your disappointment with their behaviour. The spelling and name are onomatopoeic, meaning the word sounds like the noise made by the word, which is created by a type of hissing noise.
7. Dismissive

Answer: pfft

Pfft can be used, accompanied by a shrug of the shoulders, as a gesture of uninterest in a topic. It can also be used to describe a sudden disappearance as in 'one minute he was there and then, pfft, he had gone'.
8. Come here

Answer: psst

Psst is used as a (reasonably) discreet way of attracting somebody's attention and dates from at least the 1870s. Because the sound is made by the lips, it is relatively quiet and unobtrusive.
9. A loving cuddle

Answer: cwtch

The third, and final, Welsh word in the quiz, cwtch is a word that doesn't have a direct English equivalent, which is why the English have stolen it. It is usually described as a hug or cuddle, but the original Welsh meaning is rather deeper than that, referring to a loving embrace but without any sexual connotation. The word originally meant a cubby-hole or hiding place.
10. Be quiet

Answer: shh

Valid and accepted spellings are sh and shh for this interjection, which asks people to be quiet. It's often heard in the theatre or cinemas where people are interrupting other's ability to hear dialogue or music. It is likely to have derived from the word 'hush'.
