Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where in the film do we first meet Loretta Castorini (Cher)?

Answer: A funeral home

Loretta, a widowed accountant, is trying to do the income taxes for the funeral home; she complains because the director never keeps track of his receipts.
2. In the scene at the restaurant, Loretta's boyfriend Johnny Cammereri (Danny Aiello) proposes to her but, with typical dimness, hasn't given any thought to a ring. Eventually, at Loretta's insistence, he gives her what?

Answer: His pinky ring

Loretta says yes, even though she has practically had to beg him to get down on his knees ("this is a new suit!") and give her the ring("I like this ring!"). Personally, I agree with her father's characterization of him as "a big baby!"
3. After the proposal, Loretta takes Johnny to the airport and sees him onto the plane to Sicily to visit his dying mother. Where in Sicily is he going?

Answer: Palermo

She gives him gum for the plane, because it "opens up your ears"
4. Watching the plane take off, Loretta is approached by an old Sicilian woman, whose sister is on the plane returning to Sicily. What does this woman tell her about the plane?

Answer: She has put a curse on it.

The woman's sister had stolen her man years before and had just told her that she never loved him and had done it for spite ("to be strong on me"). When Loretta says she doesn't believe in curses, the woman replies "Eh! Neither do I."
5. Loretta first breaks the news to her father, Cosmo Castorini, who is obsessed with his own mortality ("I can't sleep. It's too much like death!") and listens incessantly to an album by what female popular singer?

Answer: Vicki Carr

The song is "It Must be Him". The refrain, which Cosmo keeps singing along with, is "And I shall die".
6. Loretta has bought sparkling wine to toast her engagement. After Loretta pours two glasses of the wine, what does her father put into each glass?

Answer: A sugar cube

This seems to be a Castorini family tradition.
7. Loretta then tells her mother Rose the good news. What is Rose pleased to hear about Johnny?

Answer: That Loretta does not love him.

When Loretta unhesitatingly tells her mother that she doesn't love Johnny, Rose says "Good! When you love them they drive you crazy," (looking at her husband) "because they know they can."
8. Loretta, as per Johnny's wishes, contacts his estranged younger brother Ronnie (Nicolas Cage), a baker. What caused the brothers' falling out?

Answer: Ronnie blames Johnny for the loss of his hand (and fiancée)

When Johnny came to Ronnie's bakery to buy bread years before, Ronnie became distracted and his hand got caught in the slicer. When Ronnie's fiancée found out that he had become maimed, she broke up with him.
9. Cosmo is seen having a clandestine lunch with his girlfriend, Mona, whom he presents with a charm bracelet (after he complained that he didn't have enough money for Loretta's wedding!). What kind of charms are on the bracelet?

Answer: Birds and stars

"Birds fly to the stars, I guess" he says to a clearly infatuated Mona.
10. What does Grandpa Castorini do at the dinner table that irritates Rose to no end?

Answer: Brings plates of food to his dogs.

As he is about to bring a second plate to the dogs, Rose warns him "Old man, you give those dogs another piece of my food, I'm gonna kick you 'til you're dead!"
11. Back to Loretta and Ronnie. What animal does Loretta compare Ronnie to?

Answer: A wolf

She tells him that the loss of his hand was deliberate; he cut off his hand to escape marrying the wrong woman, just as a wolf chews off its paw to escape a trap. (the original title of the film was supposed to be "The Wolf and the Bride".)
12. After she and Ronnie have made love, a guilty Loretta goes to confession. In a scene many Catholics can identify with, she tries to slip this major sin ("once I slept with the brother of my fiance") unnoticed between what two minor sins?

Answer: She took the Lord's name in vain and bounced a check at the liquor store.

It seems like she's going to get away with it until the priest (who knows her by name!) says "But... what was that second thing you said, Loretta?"
13. Ronnie loves two things: Loretta and the opera. He agrees never to see Loretta again if she will accompany him to the Met for one evening. What opera do they go to see?

Answer: Puccini's "La Boheme"

The music of "La Boheme" is used extensively throughout the film.
14. While Cosmo is out with Mona, a lonely Rose goes to a restaurant, where she ends up having dinner and being walked home by a college professer. What future "Frasier" star plays this role?

Answer: John Mahoney

This character appears also in the proposal scene, toward the beginning of the film. He is having a dinner date with a student who ends up throwing a drink in his face when he belittles her. When the same thing happens in the later scene, Rose invites him to her table and gives him some advice.

Her wisdom and straight talking appeal to him and he asks to kiss her cheek when he drops her off at her home.
15. After the opera (where they unexpectedly run into Cosmo and Mona), what do Loretta and Ronnie end up doing?

Answer: Going back to his apartment and making love again.

After their second evening together, Loretta is seen walking blissfully along the street kicking a flattened tin can; it is clear there is no going through now with her loveless engagement with Johnny.
16. At the Castorini breakfast table the next morning, Rose notices what about both Loretta and Ronnie?

Answer: They each have love bites on their necks.

After telling Loretta to cover up her neck, Rose utters her famous line "Your life is going down the toilet!"
17. When Cosmo joins them at the breakfast table, Rose asks if she has been a good wife. When Cosmo replies yes, she says "I want you to stop seeing her." What is Cosmo's one-word reply.

Answer: Okay.

A hilarious moment; at first he slowly and ominously rises to his feet, slams his palm down on the table (as if to say "I am the master here!"), then slowly sits back down and meekly says "Okay."
18. Rose's brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Rita Cappomaggi, make an unexpected appearance at breakfast as well. Why do they show up?

Answer: The money they gave Loretta to deposit in the bank isn't there.

After leaving her aunt and uncle's deli on the previous day, Loretta stopped at the beauty parlor to get her hair done and at the department store to buy a new dress and shoes to go to the opera. She forgot to deposit the Cappomaggi's bankroll. They noticed that she was acting strangely and became suspicious when they went to the bank and the money wasn't there.
19. Speaking of breakfast, what was Rose cooking for breakfast in an earlier scene after the engagement was anounced?

Answer: Hollowed out slices of Italian bread fried with eggs and hot peppers inside.

This brought a sigh of recognition to many Italians in the audience.
20. At the end of the movie, what two pieces of music do we hear?

Answer: "Musetta's Waltz" (from "La Boheme") and "That's Amore!"

"That's Amore!" was heard at the beginning of the film and "Musetta's Waltz", among other excerpts from "La Boheme" was heard throughout the film.
