Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Pilates mainly designed to achieve?

Answer: It stretches, tones, and improves the balance of the human body.

While Pilates is often performed on the floor while lying on a mat, there are also Pilates machines. There are several different Pilates machines including the Reformer and the Cadillac.
2. In this exercise, one leg is held to the chest while the other is held straight at a 45-degree angle. The opposite elbow is taken to the bent knee. Switch knees and elbows slowly.

Answer: Criss Cross

The Criss Cross is one of five consecutive exercises that target the stomach. It has not been part of Pilates' original set but is one of the most commonly taught ones today.
3. This exercise is always the first exercise done in Pilates.

Answer: One Hundred

The one hundred involves pumping your arms up and down one hundred times while breathing in sets of five.
4. In Pilates, speed is more important than form.

Answer: False

Pilates is most effective when done slowly and methodically. If done too quickly, or out of form, you increase the chance for injury.
5. This exercise is the last one in the Pilates series. Balance on hipbones with toes held off of the ground. With arms inside knees holding onto ankles, rock backwards and beat heels three times.

Answer: The Seal

All four of these exercises involve rolling. The clue in this question was that the heels are beat together three times. This only happens in the Seal.
6. A larger lung capacity and improved circulation are some of the health benefits of Pilates.

Answer: True

Pilates also improves bone density and eases arthritis.
7. Which two exercises in Pilates are specifically designed to force the air out of your lungs?

Answer: The Saw and The Mermaid

The Saw and the Mermaid both involve extensive stretching of the sides. This, in combination with structured breathing, compresses the lungs expelling more air than you can just by forcefully exhaling. This forces you to inhale deeply providing the body with a huge dose of oxygen.
8. In order to progress in Pilates you should stretch to just over the point of pain.

Answer: False

Pilates, as well as Yoga, is all about gently stretching your body to increase flexibility and strength.
9. What is the name of the series of exercises designed to increase leg and butt tone?

Answer: The Side Kick Series

Hip placement is the most important thing to remember when doing the Side Kick Series. If the top hip falls back as you kick, the exercise is not as effective.
10. What is a typical side effect while doing the One Hundred?

Answer: Warm Feeling Around the Heart

The warm feeling is caused by the increased circulation. The pumping of the arms and the rhythmic breathing increase the circulation.
