Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Most people know Ace-King as "Big Slick". By which of these names is it also referred to as?

Answer: Anna Kournikova - In part, because of her initials.

AK is sometimes called the Anna Kournikova, but not just for her initials - The joke goes, "Because it looks great, but it never wins!" - Sorry Anna.

If you answered "Ice Cube", you get partial credit. AK is sometimes called the "Machine Gun", because of the AK-47, but not the "Ice Cube".
2. By which, of the following, is Ace-King sometimes referred to as? (Especially in Dallas.)

Answer: Walking Back To Houston.

TJ Cloutier once said to Barry Greenstein, "I can see you learned to play in Houston. Those Houston players would come to Dallas and play that Ace-King, but they'd always end up against a pair of Aces. That's why we call that hand 'Walking Back To Houston'."
3. Ace-Queen is sometimes called "Little Slick".

Answer: True

Other names are "Big Chick", and "Mrs. Slick".
4. Many know 99 as "Wayne Gretzky" because of his jersey number. When is it also called the "Phil Hellmuth"?

Answer: When both Nines are black.

Phil won the 1989 World Series Main Event with wired, black Nines, making him the youngest poker player ever to do so. The name may be, in large part, due to his own self-promotion, as he makes it a point to pose with them often.
5. Ace-Jack is often called "Ajax", "Jackass", or "Black Jack". Is there another hand which is also called Black Jack?

Answer: Yes, 74.

74 is also referred to as "Double Down", another play on Black Jack terminology.

Though less common, any two-card hand totalling 21 may sometimes be called "Black Jack", and any starting hand totalling 11 might be called "Black Jack", or "Double Down".
6. King-Queen is called the "Marriage", King-Queen suited is a "Royal Marriage", but does King-Queen suited have a special name when the hand is Hearts?

Answer: Yes

It's called "Valentines Day". This nickname is also shared with 96 of Hearts.
7. When King-Queen is off-suit it is sometimes called a "_____ Marriage".

Answer: Mixed

In a full game this is usually considered a trouble, or even a trash hand, depending on your position and the texture of play.
8. King-9 is commonly referred to as "Canine", "Fido" or "The Dog". Which, of the following, is it also called?

Answer: The Donk

Bad players are often called "donkeys". New players tend to overvalue this hand. If it hits, you usually have a high pair with a weak kicker, or a good kicker but a marginal pair.

Two Pair, Three Of A Kind, Four Of A Kind, and Full House are such unlikely long shots, that trying to hit one of these on the flop usually can't be justified. (Yes, I know about implied pot odds, please don't send a correction note. You're still a donk if you play it religiously.)

If it is suited it is weak because "3 gappers" are not considered to even be half decent connectors, and a suited Ace of the same suit crushes any Flush draw and may cost you a lot if you do make a Flush.

Experienced players (who make money) play this hand only in certain situations, whereas newer and weaker players tend to play it with zeal.
9. 83 is a hand most usually throw away, outside of being in the Big Blind unraised, or playing heads-up. However, it actually does have a nickname. Which, of the folowing is 83 known as?

Answer: Raquel Welch

Can't quite figure out why? Instead of thinking 83, think 38 - it's one of her measurements.
10. What hand is called "Darth Vader"?

Answer: Two black Fours.

"The Dark Side of the Fours", get it?

Also, any wired pair of Fours may be called "Luke Skywalker": "May the Fours be with you!"
11. Besides the "Rockets", what is Ace-Ace also called?

Answer: All of these.

The term, "Bullets" is probably more common in other forms of poker, but the term is used in Hold 'Em as well.
12. Which hand is the "Beer Hand"?

Answer: 72 offsuit, because you'd have to be drunk to play it!

AA is sometimes called "Alcoholics Anonymous", or the "Sobriety Hand", but 72 offsuit is the "Beer Hand".
13. 72 offsuit is sometimes called "The Hammer". What is 72 suited called?

Answer: The Velvet Hammer

If you said, "The Nuts", you might be hammered yourself!
14. Ace-Ten is commonly referred to as "Book Ends", but what famous poker player is this hand also named in honor of?

Answer: Johnny Moss

Moss won eight WSOP titles, including 3 Main Events, and played in every WSOP from 1970-1995.
15. What poker icon is Ace-Queen named in honor of?

Answer: Doyle Brunson

Doyle has expressed dismay at a "trash hand" like T2 being named in his honor. AQ was named for him back when he was a Texas rounder, because he almost never plays it. While not a "trash hand", Mr. Brunson considers it to be a hand that can get you into a lot of trouble.
