Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What large city in the southern United States is one of the important settings of the 1939 mega-film 'Gone with the Wind'?

Answer: Atlanta

Based on Margaret Mitchell's hit novel, 'Gone with the Wind' is set entirely in Georgia, both rural and urban. Victor Fleming was the director of this film that still, by some measures, is the all-time box-office champion.
2. Which of these great actresses was not part of the cast of 'The Women', an all-star comedy from 1939?

Answer: Bette Davis

Paulette Goddard and Joan Fontaine were also part of the great cast of 'The Women', a film directed by George Cukor. It's really a charming film!
3. What type of animal is hunted in the thrilling 1932 film 'The Most Dangerous Game'?

Answer: Human beings

The hunt for man as a theme has been rehashed over and over again in Hollywood, but perhaps never as thrillingly as in 'The Most Dangerous Game'. Starring Joel McCrea and Fay Wray (yes, of 'King Kong' fame), this movie is worthy of a viewing!
4. Where does the Joad family move to find itself a new life in the touching 1940 film 'The Grapes of Wrath', masterfully put together by director John Ford?

Answer: California

From the Oklahoma Dust Bowl the Joad family assembles itself for a hair-raising journey across the U.S. in a ramshackle truck. John Ford directed this socially conscious film that featured Henry Fonda and Jane Darwell, among others.
5. (1958) A very eccentric aunt raises her orphaned nephew in an atmosphere of wacky opulence, with strange characters and odd decor constantly entering and exiting their lives. What film is described above?

Answer: Auntie Mame

Rosalind Russell really deserved an Oscar for her turn as Mame Dennis, the madcap aunt of Patrick Dennis (upon whose book the film was based). Russell had made the role of Auntie Mame famous on Broadway before taking it to film.
6. Though Marlon Brando is best known for roles such as Don Corleone from 'The Godfather' and Stanley Kowalski from 'A Streetcar Named Desire', he appeared in many other exciting films. In what 1953 film does he appear as a tough guy biker?

Answer: The Wild One

'The Wild One' was a then-controversial movie about two rival biker gangs that terrorize a tiny town in California. Not only did Brando appear, but Lee Marvin as well. The movie was considered so dangerous, it was banned in the UK.
7. The three lead actors from the 1935 film 'Mutiny on the Bounty' were all nominated for Best Actor Oscars. Which of these was not one of them?

Answer: Spencer Tracy

My personal favorite adaptation of the Bounty story, 1935's 'Mutiny on the Bounty' featured a gruff Laughton as Captain Bligh and an un-moustached Clark Gable as the swashbuckling Fletcher Christian. Tone almost steals the show as the self-sacrificial Byam.
8. What is the nationality of the character Manuel, played brilliantly by Spencer Tracy in the 1937 film 'Captains Courageous'?

Answer: Portuguese

Spencer Tracy is simply stunning as Manuel, a low-key Portuguese fisherman who charges himself with the duty of teaching the young and arrogant Harvey Cheyne some of life's difficult lesson. Child actor Freddie Bartholomew's performance as Harvey Cheyne is also marvelous!
9. What is the first name of the character played by the terribly underrated British actress Deborah Kerr in the 1956 film musical 'The King and I'?

Answer: Anna

Adapted from the Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein play of the same title, 'The King and I' garnered for Yul Brynner his Best Actor Oscar. Unfortunately, Kerr did not win the Actress Oscar for this film, or any other for that matter.
10. In what 1945 film did the lovely Gene Tierney play a very jealous (and insane) woman who marries an author, and attempts to push everyone else out of his life, sometimes to deadly consequences?

Answer: Leave Her to Heaven

I never thought I'd say this about Gene Tierney, but she was actually frightening in 'Leave Her to Heaven', a film directed by John Stahl. Cornel Wilde, Vincent Price and Jeanne Crain also appear, but it is Tierney who steals the show. It's no wonder that this film procured for Tierney her one and only Oscar nomination.
