Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Please note: The word clue when capitalized refers to one of "The 39 Clues." Otherwise it is just a minor clue to help find the real Clue. Now, on to the quiz! Who is the first character that we meet in "The Maze of Bones?"

Answer: Grace Cahill

The opening scene of the book has Grace Cahill on her deathbed making the crucial decision to release her 'alternate' will - the one that will launch the deadly quest for the 39 Clues!
2. Forty people attend the reading of Grace's will, representing the various branches of the Cahill family. Everyone is offered the chance to choose between an inheritance of one million dollars... or a clue. "Just a clue that might lead you to the most important treasure in the world and make you powerful beyond belief..." How long do they have to make their choice?

Answer: 5 minutes

Most of the 40 people accept the money, but there are seven 'teams' in all that refuse the money in favour of the clue. Amy and Dan's guardian, their great-aunt Beatrice, threatens to disown them and leave them to Social Services if they chose the clue over the money. It isn't a big enough threat.
3. The clue that Amy and Dan receive says, "RESOLUTION. The fine print to guess, Seek out Richard S____." While every other team rushes out to track down the answer to this riddle, 14-year-old Amy and 11-year-old Dan are stumped. Where to begin? Luckily, someone prompts them with an idea that leads them to check Grace's library. Who is it?

Answer: William McIntyre

Mr. McIntyre, Grace's lawyer and executor of her will, says this to Dan and Amy: "I must get back to my office. But, my dear, perhaps your way of finding out is not the same as the other teams'. What do you normally do when you need answers?"
4. Amy and Dan narrowly escape the Cahill mansion's destruction as one of their rivals sets it on fire. Luckily they manage to hang on to their lead - a book entitled "Poor Richard's Almanack."

Answer: False

Once they realized that there is a fire, Amy, Dan, and their 'Uncle' Alistair Oh begin scrambling to find an exit. Alistair is holding the book, and when Amy and Dan see him stumbling away from the inferno, they also see that he still has it.
5. Having determined that Richard S was a pseudonym for Benjamin Franklin, Amy and Dan follow an instruction left in the margin of the Almanack by their mother, Hope Cahill: "Follow Franklin, first clue. Maze of Bones." What city does 'following Franklin' lead them to?

Answer: Philadelphia

In Philadelphia, the Cahill kids visit the Library Company of Philadelphia, which leads them to the Franklin Institute (at the science museum). There, they narrowly avoid an explosion meant for them, but they DO manage to find information to help them move further along in the hunt for the first of the 39 Clues.
6. Finding what they need at the Franklin Institute, Amy and Dan determine that they must travel on to Paris, France. Who is traveling with them to provide them with an 'adult escort?'

Answer: Nellie Gomez

Nellie Gomez is employed as the siblings' 'au pair.' Essentially she is there as a glorified babysitter, or nanny. She accompanied the two kids on their trip to Philadelphia, and is later convinced to continue the trip to Paris and beyond.
7. Which of Dan and Amy's relatives, and rival in the Clue hunt, do they meet at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris?

Answer: Jonah Wizard

Jonah Wizard, celebrity rap star, whisks Amy and Dan off with him in his waiting limousine. They get out of the car when they see another rival, Irina Spasky, walking along the road carrying their stolen book, "Poor Richard's Almanack."
8. Shortly after arriving in Paris, Amy and Dan follow another of their Clue hunt rivals - Irina Spasky - through the streets of Paris to a location that proves to be a stronghold for one of the Cahill branches. Which one?

Answer: Lucian

Following Irina Spasky into the Lucian stronghold gives Amy and Dan their next hint on where to go in Paris to try to track down the Clue. They find what Irina had been looking at -- information on '23 Rue des Jardins' on the Ȋle St-Louis.
9. Dan and Amy follow the new clue that they found following Irina Spasky, but it turns out to be a trap. Luckily, the Holt family inadvertently gives them the information that leads them to the right place in the catacombs (maze of bones) beneath Paris. They find a number of skulls arranged to make a puzzle that provides them with the final coordinates of the location of the Clue in Paris. What kind of puzzle is it?

Answer: Magic Square

After solving the missing pieces of the Magic Square, Amy and Dan are able to figure out the coordinates of the Clue's location on a surveyor's map of the city. This leads them to another church, this one named St-Pierre.
10. A number of teams vie for possession of the first of the 39 Clues at the church in Montmartre. Amy and Dan manage to get their hands on a vial of liquid wrapped inside a paper, but before they can do much more than read the anagrammed clue on the vial, they are confronted by other teams. Unfortunately, rival Ian Kabra takes the vial from them. Even with the loss of the vial, Dan and Amy are able to figure out what the first Clue is from all the information they had gathered so far. What is it?

Answer: Iron Solute

'Iron Solute' had been listed on a supply request at the Franklin Institute, and was also an anagram of the word RESOLUTION, given in their very first clue from Grace Cahill. Most importantly, Dan and Amy still have the paper that the vial was wrapped in, which points them to where they have to go next -- in Book 2!
