Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The book opens with Katniss Everdeen in the woods on her way home to prepare for the Victory Tour. After a trip into town, she goes home and finds that President Snow has invaded her home. During their conversation, Snow discussed the previous Hunger Games: "If Head Gamemaker, ______ _____, had had any brains, he'd have blown you to dust right then." Who was the Head Game Maker from the 74th annual Hunger Games?

Answer: Seneca Crane

Snow was discussing Katniss pulling out the poisonous Nightlock berries in the last Hunger Games. He said that he had a problem that started when Katniss pulled out the Nightlock. Katniss knew that if it came to Katniss and Peeta both living, or both dying, the Gamemakers would prefer that they both live. Snow then stated this, and said, "But he (Seneca Crane) had an unfortunate sentimental streak. So here you are. Can you guess where he is?" This last statement implied that Crane had been executed for his failure.
2. Shortly after President Snow left the Everdeen house, Katniss' prep team arrived from the Capitol. During their babblings, one of them said excitedly, "In your very first year of being a victor, you get to be a mentor in a _________!" Finish this quote from Katniss' team.

Answer: Quarter Quell

Each victor of the Hunger Games became a mentor to future tributes. They would teach the tributes fighting and survival techniques, and line up sponsorships to give their tributes the best chance to win. The Quarter Quell was held every 25 years in remembrance of the Dark Days.

In a Quarter Quell, the celebrations and festivities surrounding the Hunger Games were hyped up even more than usual. There was always an extra sinister twist to the Games in a Quarter Quell. For example, the 50th Hunger Games (the second Quarter Quell) required that twice the number of tributes from each district be selected. That meant that instead of 24 tributes, there were 48, and still only one victor. That was the year that Haymitch Abernathy won the title.
3. After being prepped, Katniss went to the living room and found Cinna arranging things to get Katniss ready for the cameras. The clothing designs were supposedly her own designs, but Cinna did the work for her. When she examined a sketchbook and said, "You know, I think I show a lot of promise," Cinna replied, "Get dressed, you ____________." Finish this line.

Answer: worthless thing

Each victor is required to have a "talent". A victor's talent was something that they did to occupy their time since working was no longer necessary. Some tributes found talents that were appealing to them, while other tributes, like Katniss, had their talents chosen for them. Katniss' "talent" was designing clothes. Cinna, her stylist, was the one who selected her talent and promised Katniss that he would do all the work for her. Peeta's talent was painting.

The paintings he showed Katniss on the train were depictions of events that took place during their Hunger Games together. Katniss told Peeta that, even though they were rather amazing, she hated them, because of the bad memories associated with them.
4. After the Victory Tour, Katniss realized that the only way to survive was to run away. She tried to convince Gale to run off with her, but he would not run with everyone Katniss planned on taking. Gale asked Katniss why President Snow would kill her if he was planning her wedding with Peeta. Katniss answered in anger, "Well, with an uprising in District ________, I doubt he's spending much time choosing my wedding cake!" What district was in rebellion?

Answer: Eight

Katniss saw footage of the uprising in District Eight on Mayor Undersee's television. President Snow told Katniss to subdue the district's urge to rebel by convincing them that she was madly in love with Peeta when she pulled out the Nightlock berries in the Hunger Games.

He wanted the districts to believe that her actions to save herself and Peeta in the Games were out of love, not rebellion against the Capitol. District Eight obviously didn't buy it, and eventually rebelled. Katniss later found two runaways from District Eight and heard that they were running to District 13 because they believed 13 had been hiding from the Capitol since the Dark Days.
5. Before the Reaping for the Quarter Quell, President Snow appeared during a television broadcast to inform the citizens of Panem what special set of rules would be applied. "On the seventy-fifth anniversary (of the Dark Days), as a reminder to the rebels that even the _______ among them cannot overcome the power of the Capitol, the male and female tributes will be reaped from their existing pool of victors." Who couldn't overcome the power of the Capitol?

Answer: strongest

After the Dark Days, when the laws for Panem and the Hunger Games were put in place, every 25 years marked a Quarter Quell. As Katniss herself said in "Catching Fire", a Quarter Quell was a "more glorified version of the Games to make fresh the memory of those killed by the districts' rebellion." The first Quarter Quell required that each district vote on the tributes that would be sent into the arena.

The second Quarter Quell required that twice the number of tributes to be reaped. The third Quarter Quell, in more simple terms, required that past victors from each district be the ones selected for the Hunger Games. If you were a male or female victor from the previous Games, your name would go into the reaping ball with other victors from your district. District 12 had two victors before Katniss and Peeta, Haymitch Abernathy, and a victor who was deceased. Once Peeta and Katniss won the 74th Hunger Games, District 12 had three victors to choose from. Peeta and Haymitch were the only two males to choose from, but Katniss was the only female victor from District 12, which meant that she would automatically be selected for the Quarter Quell.
6. After reaching the Capitol, Katniss was prepared by her team for the opening ceremony. Her team was distraught at the fact that Katniss was forced into the arena a second time. By the time Katniss met with Cinna for lunch, she was irritable and could not handle any more crying from anyone. When Cinna came in, she warned him, "I swear if you cry, I'll ____ you here and now." Fill in the missing word.

Answer: kill

Cinna assured Katniss that he always put all of his emotions into what he was working on, so he wouldn't hurt anyone. This was evident after the interviews when he turned Katniss' wedding dress into Mockingjay feathers. It was meant to inspire the rebellion around Panem, and Cinna knew he would pay for it.

He made sure he didn't hurt anyone else with his emotions or his work, and was willing to accept whatever happened to him. He was eventually beaten to death by Capitol Peacekeepers just before Katniss and the other tributes were launched into the arena.
7. Just before the chariots rolled out into the Capitol for the opening ceremony, Katniss had a friendly chat with Finnick Odair, the winner of the 65th Hunger Games. Katniss asked the District 4 tribute what he spent his winnings on, and Finnick responded, "Oh, I haven't dealt in anything as common as _____ for years." Finish Finnick's statement.

Answer: money

Katniss asked Finnick how people paid him, and he responded by saying, "With secrets." When Finnick won the 65th Hunger games at age 14, he did so in convincing fashion, making Capitol citizens want him. He became a sex symbol in the Capitol, and, though he did not retain anyone's favor, he was sought after by many people. Finnick asked Katniss if she had any secrets to tell, and she told him that other people knew her secrets before she did. Finnick told her "Unfortunately, I think that's true." Then he said he felt sorry she had to cancel her wedding.
8. The night before the tributes were launched into the Quarter Quell arena, Peeta and Katniss asked Haymitch for any last minute advice before they said good-bye. He just told them, "Stay alive." Before they got to their room, Haymitch said, "Katniss, when you're in the arena...You just remember who _______." Finish what Haymitch told Katniss.

Answer: the enemy is

Haymitch told Katniss to remember who the real enemy was: the Capitol. They were the ones who forced tributes into arenas year after year and kept districts in line through fear. Haymitch knew the rebellion was in motion and that part of the plan was to keep Peeta and Katniss alive and free them from the Quarter Quell arena.

He knew Katniss would be a vital part of the escape plan and the rebellion, and wanted her to remember who she was truly fighting. This line was actually what led Katniss to realize the escape plan at the end.
9. While in the arena, the tributes were subjected to poisonous fog that caused their skin to scab after the toxins were washed away. Haymitch got a sponsor to send a skin ointment to Katniss and her allies to ease the itching. After Finnick applied the ointment to his skin, Katniss asked him if that was the first time he had not looked good. Finnick responded, "It must be. The sensation's completely new. How have you managed it all these years?" What was Katniss' reply?

Answer: Just avoid mirrors

Katniss responded to Finnick's question by saying, "Just avoid mirrors. You'll forget about it." Trying to get as much enjoyment from life as possible, Katniss and Finnick used the ointment on their faces to wake Peeta from his sleep. Getting a good laugh was something they weren't going to have much of in the arena. Thankfully, their time was not over after the Quarter Quell!
10. After the dome of the arena exploded, Katniss believed she had been picked up by the Capitol. She decided to kill the others as a form of mercy to prevent them from being tortured by the Capitol. But before she could use the syringe she planned to use, she stumbled into a meeting with Haymitch, Finnick and a rebel leader. Haymitch said, "So it's you and a syringe against the Capitol? See, this is why no one lets you _________." Can you finish this statement from Haymitch?

Answer: make the plans

Haymitch explained to Katniss that several districts were in rebellion against the Capitol. He also said they had agreed to keep Peeta alive to keep Katniss willing to fight as the face of the rebellion. District 13 really did exist, and that was where they were all relocating before engaging in a full scale war with the Capitol. Haymitch also told Katniss that Peeta had been captured by the Capitol's hovercraft.

She responded by attacking Haymitch with her fingernails. She was taken back to her hospital room and sedated. Gale Hawthorne visited her a while later and gently informed her that, even though her family was safe in District 13, District 12 had been completely destroyed.
