Coffee was the first product to be available as a certified Fairtrade product. It was sold under the name of Max Havelaar, the fictional character from a novel published in 1860. The novel, written under the pen name Multatuli, exposed the corrupt practices of the colonial Dutch government in Indonesia, which included the exploitation of the local labour force.

The name was an apt choice for a scheme designed to avoid malpractice. The scheme soon spread - to other European countries initially, and then to others such as Canada, Japan and USA.

2. As well as a minimum price for their goods, Fairtrade producers are paid a small amount over and above their value. What is this called?

The Fairtrade contract with the producers guarantees the lowest price which they can be offered for their goods. If the market price is higher, then they will receive that amount instead, but the buyers cannot offer a lower figure, even if the market has dropped.

In addition, a premium is paid which has to be used for the benefit of the local community. It can be used to build wells or provide school facilities and the decisions on how to use the premium are made by the community.

The miners are guaranteed a minimum price plus 10% to be invested in the community. The Colombian flag consists of three horizontal stripes with yellow being the top half and blue and red the lower half.

In 1997, an international organisation was formed under the name of the Fairtrade Labelling Organisation to bring together all the different national schemes and establish standards common to all. They also carry out audits of overseas groups. Among the standards laid down are fair treatment of employees, restrictions on child labour and banning the use of harmful chemicals on crops.
