Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Texas' largest city at the beginning of the 21st century?

Answer: Houston

According to the census that was taken in 2000, at that time Houston had just shy of 2,000,000 residents! Aside from being the biggest city in Texas, Houston also had the first domed stadium in the U.S.--the Astrodome.
2. A famous battle took place in Texas in 1836, in what is now known as San Antonio. What mission, that still stands today, did Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie and William Barret Travis refuse to surrender?

Answer: The Alamo

Most people commonly mistake the Alamo for a fort, but it was indeed a mission. The Alamo was established in 1817 by Spanish missionaries from Mexico. At that time, the Alamo's name was the "Mission San Antonio de Valero." It later became commonly referred to as "the Alamo" because of the vast number of cottonwood trees ("alamos") that grew nearby.
3. What college team would you be rooting for if you were hollering "Gig 'Em Aggies!"? (In Texas we don't yell, we holler.)

Answer: Texas A&M

Answer: False

Alaska is bigger.
5. What city was the site of the deadliest natural disaster to occur in the United States?

Answer: Galveston

On September 8, 1900, Galveston was hit by the worst storm in United States history. The tidal waves and hurricanes (with up to 120-mile an hour winds) lasted 18 hours and killed more than 6,000 people. One of Galveston's tourist attractions today is the seawall, which was built after the great storm to prevent such a disaster from ever destroying the city again.

Answer: Chili

Chili is not Mexican food as most people believe, it is pure Texan! This "hot meat stew" originated in the 1880's.
7. During the Texas Revolution the words "Come and take it!" were printed on a banner that was flown during the Battle of Gonzalez in October of 1835. What were those words referring to?

8. What "King of the Wild Frontier" was Texas' best known hero at the Alamo?

Answer: Davy Crockett

It was a Disney song, "Davy Crockett," that labeled him the "King of the Wild Frontier." Despite popular belief, Davy didn't wear a coonskin cap. He was 49 at the time the Alamo was under seige. Legend has it that he was one of seven survivors of the Alamo, though no one has ever proven it, or disproven it.
